I NEED A METAPHOR: Architecture CodeX looks at the football stadium in Glendale AZ and examines the relationship between the "famous" Architect and the Architect of Record. We also look at the first stadium with both a retractable roof and a retractable field.

I suspect Peter Eisenman might not feel the same way.

please tell me what you really think about the metaphor. I have worked with Populous on the Covid canceled LA convention center. I also worked with their predecessor company Hok Sport. Hok sport was my Designer of Record for the Pac Bell now ATT stadium in San Francisco when I was at Kajima. We were the country's first major DBFOM on a sports facility in 1994. Hok sport knew precisely what to do for the stadium's function; from the outside, it is a beautiful building that did not need a Metaphor to look good. Another interesting fact is that the dirty Hary movie scene where he says "make my day" was filmed on the other corner.

Then you agree with me that Populous/HOK didn't need a famous architect to design the stadium. It's like putting a fancy hood ornament on well engineered car. I needed a metaphor to explain myself.

as much as i like Eisenman's intellectual take on architecture (and at times a bit too much and seemingly pretentious), this one didn't seem to justify the design. Metaphors are important if a nation wants a connectivity to generate a sense of pride with the symbolic value of a structure, but if it becomes too abstract and needs to be explained to understand, then it is basically useless.. besides, Eisenman isn't really knows to produce aesthetically pleasing structures (of course if it comes to sculpture artistic intent)... and lastly, i think picking ordinary object because it represents a country or nation is too simplistic and quite "college-level" type of approach, and i expected better from Eisenman.
