In this video, I’m visiting the National Autonomous University of Mexico (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México) or simply UNAM. I’ll show you the famous murals by Diego Rivera and Juan O’Gorman. We will dive into murals of spectacular Central Library. Also, I’ll show you Cosmic Rays Pavilion, which is important first step in concrete shell architecture and design of parabolic structures.

My most memorable days are devoted to my college years at this magnificent institution. I studied from 1990 to 1994 at the School of Engineering, you missed it buy were very close... those years were glorious! Thanks for bringing back memories and as striking as you may think, I walked many times per week all over campus and never stopped one minute to watch carefully the wonders of the murals and the architecture, for me everything was normal....

@@AndriiZhulidov The mural in the popped out wall is a representation I think to the union of Latinamerica by its common roots and culture. On the left you see a condor (representing South America) and on the right an eagle (Mexico)

I've worked for most of my life as a university professor. I never quite understand why tourists come to campuses. I understand why prospective students and their parents do. But the significance of a university is not so much in its physical plant but in things that visitors really can't access. I only visit campuses while traveling if I have a meeting, a conference, or I have to use the research facilities.
@AndriiZhulidov
@AndriiZhulidov Год назад
I understand your point here and you are right that the value of university is not what lays on the facades of the buildings. I can say that unique and interesting campuses with great campus plannings and nice walkways, well maintained architecture and landscapes attract people and I don't thing there is anything wrong with it. People just want to enjoy it!
@vasquezovj65
@vasquezovj65 2 года назад
This will probably be an unpopular opinion, but the campus grounds need to be better maintain. Overgrown grass, paint peeling off walls and columns. The architecture and murals are fantastic however it's difficult to appreciate if all you see are all the signs of wear and tear. A place of this much importance deserves better.
@AndriiZhulidov
@AndriiZhulidov 2 года назад
You are right! I was thinking that the place is not properly maintained at all. If you compare it to University Campuses in US, it looks bad. But education in states is very expensive, and in UNAM education is free. So as I understand UNAM depends on the government money and Mexico is not very rich country. On the other hand, some very simple maintenance things that you mention are easy to fix and don’t require a lot of money.
@vasquezovj65
@vasquezovj65 2 года назад
@@AndriiZhulidov Agree, shouldn't be that expensive to maintain the grounds. As for Mexico not being very rich, it's not that poor either. Mexico ranks about 15th in GDP of over 200 countries. The current president is overseeing dozens of new infrastructure programs throughout Mexico which include new rail transit systems, airports and roadways. I'm guessing this development is costing tax payers billions of dollars. I'm thinking a few of those dollars could be sent UNAM way. For that matter more money should be spent on educational institutes throughout the nation. Thanks for the reply sir.
@giovannihernandez3208
@giovannihernandez3208 2 года назад
The UNAM campus has been closed since March 2019, usually when it is closed it is badly maintained. You could return in the next weeks where all students are returning to presential classes. You note the difference. Grass is usually in normal circumstances well maintained. On the other hand it is true US Universities are so much better maintained. I have to add bad maintenance is associated to sindical conditions unfortunately.
