@@chidozienkemdirim6393 Hello this is me from another account. These drawings are from a variations of programmes, mostly Autocad, Illustrator, Photoshop and also just hand drawings which are scanned. But recently I have been using 3d software with render combos along with these programmes which have worked great. Recommend Sketchup with V-ray and finishing with photoshop.
How many Projects would you put in for a masters appliance (when they didn't give a number)? And thank you very much, it was really helpful! I enjoyed watching it.😁👌👌
That's a tough answer to give, I'm pretty sure this may vary a lot internationally. But maybe something that would help is if you can check other portfolios from students that went to the same school you're applying to. But to give you a rough guess, I'd probably aim for between 4 and 7. If you show a lot of drawings and images from a single project, maybe go for a lower number of total projects. But if you show just a handful of drawings, then you can talk about more projects. Hopefully that wasn't confusing haha Thanks a lot for the feedback, Namik! Cheers!
It's SUPER interesting going through these with y'all. I'm a professional illustrator and I love see how these compare to portfolios I've built and vetted. The biggest difference that I can tell is that your waving green flags are sometimes super neutral for me, but we agree on all the things that need fixing or another round of edits. Very cool!
OK, here is the problem. People only look at the aesthetics of a project. Do these Universities only teach the design and how it looks? is that it? Would an employer or company only hire someone from these portfolios because of the layout and font selection? If one of those is going to earn someone a PHD, a Doctorate, in architecture then I think it is a gimmick. I don't care if any of you get offended, it isn't meant to offend but the truth often offends. Architecture should encapsulate the geography and the materials and their sourcing and logistics and the efficiency of the structure and how it impacts the surrounding community and business. Not just some nice looking, often useless excuse for art, waste of time resources and funding for someone's ego to put their name into the world. I am glad I didn't waste my time at an educational facility and pay them to teach me to limit myself to produce anything like this. But yes some of them have a very nice and neat layout and are very well presented but if I was reviewing Architecture portfolios I would say these are all lacking a lot of information and details and more like a coffee table pass the time pretty pictures book. I would not take any of those seriously.
Agreed. Architecture isn’t just art. It has to prioritize usability and structure. The artistic properties should lie within these two, not above them.
HIII I AM FROM INDIA STUDYING ARCHITECTURE, AND FROM DECEMBER I M JOINING FOR INTRNSHIP. AND THIS VIDEO INSIPIRES A LOT AND I AM HAPPY YOU GUYS JUST COME INTO MY LIFE AT A RIGHT TIME...YOURE THE BESTT..THANKS A LOT
They always say put sketches or hobbies when applying to university (masters) but I don’t sketch buildings it’s more of fashion illustration would it be a wise decision to include it under hobbies and skills ?
I believe when it comes to sketches or hobbies on a portfolio, it's always about showing a bit more of you and what you like. Extra skills, hobbies, or interests that add value to your portfolio. Any type of work really! From creative skills to more technical interests.
I'm sorry English is not my best, but I will like to know if it's acceptable to put into the portfolio construction details (in side). My work experience is more into the construction area (because is were i could find s job) and I will like try to apply into an architecture master or how I can do that? Thanks !
For sure! Any type of image or drawing should go in a portfolio if that’s your strength. However from my point of view it shouldn’t be the only type of drawing. Especially if you’re applying for a masters, you need to show that you’re a full fledged architect. But also as we mentioned on the video, there are various types of masters, so curating your portfolio towards that application process will increase your chances of getting approved. Maybe looking at portfolios from people who got in before you. I hope that gives you some clarity!
Im new in your channel and this video is so useful for me, I'm graduating from architecture and currently I'm looking for a job, so, I have to create my portfolio
The links are exactly the ones that people submitted for review. So if they are not available anymore it means that the author removed them. Usually, that's because they uploaded a new version or are working on a new version. So what I'd suggest is visiting their profile on ISSUU. Most often the new version is already there. Thanks a lot for the kind comment!
Hey Marc! To design and create your portfolio we recommend Adobe InDesign. There`s a new course on our website that just launched and teaches you everything you need to know about it. Then to share it online with the page flip effect, the best option is ISSUU. It has a free version and it's what most people use to host portfolios.
what size do you recommend for a digital portfolio? I initially did it in A3 so it could be printed but thinking it will be viewed digitally anyways so might as well use a digital format and avoid the black sides :)
There's no unique answer here. But thinking about filling the whole screen, you might want to choose a format that once it's opened as a spread, it occupies that 16:9 aspect ratio. Although this is also not guaranteed to happen on the employer screen, cause they may be using a different monitor. For example, I use an ultra-wide one, with an aspect ratio of 21:9. So the more horizontal ones fill my screen better.
Hey Sam! I know... Videos are not possible to include in a typical PDF portfolio. In that case, you'll need to work on your personal website. You can even convert your videos into short GIFs and add them to Behance. Either way, you'll need to innovate and express your work differently.
Hey Victoria! The best program to create portfolios is Adobe Indesign. There are a ton o free tutorials here on youtube teaching this software. But in case you're looking for a complete architecture portfolio course, check out this one that I just released: learnupstairs.com/courses/indesign-for-architects-all-about-portfolios/ And thank you so much for the feedback!
Why would any reasonable person go for m.arch. its useless. Its just your bachelors its no different. Try getting an msc. A master of science in energy in buildings or urban planning. Or construction engineering or structural engineering I suggest energy in buildings. It has nothing to do with architecture. Its all heat transfer and fluid mechanics. Your job opportunities will increase. Right now in my country building energy analysts are paid twice as much as an architect. Plus we get to work in government institutions. And the energy and petroleum sector. They employ us as consultants and solution makers and people that just calculate. In simple terms imagine mechanical engineering and enviromental engineering had a kid. It would be that. The world doesnt need more artists. It needs people that are good at math. Hard math. Fluid dynamics. Heat transfer... etc related to mechanical engineering.
You certainly got a point! But maybe that's not the path everyone is willing to take. And also in some countries getting a master's is mandatory if you want to become a full-fledged architect, otherwise, you end up being an architectural assistant or architectural designer.
maxkresse's Portfolio, its typography and composition is top-notch. You seldom see graphical work and typefont composition done so elegantly. Something that I think is diminishing today.
I’m looking for ideas to go into a portfolio for a masters in architecture for students without an undergrad architecture degree. It’s a masters that’s a bit longer to get you caught up on design knowledges; therefore, I don’t have all these digital buildings under my belt like I see in all your samples. I’m going to the school hopefully to learn all that. I have a lot of art work and some floor plans. What do you suggest.
This is an excellent question actually. I am myself redoing my portfolio without an undergrad architecture degree to apply for a Master one; though I am an interior designer, have an architecture background and worked almost 2 years as an apprentice in an architecture firm, I still have some questions and apprehensions on how to process so I hope they will see your comment and make a special video for this particular matter!
hi guys. i need an advice. i'm moving abroad and i'm currently redesigning my portfolio and switching it to english language. should i also switch all the info on my architectural drawings from their original language to english? or just the text of the portfolio itself will be enough? switching the drawings to english as well would be a lot of work but i'm ready to do it if it can help me land a job.
That's a really personal answer, there's not just one answer. But if I had to take a wild guess and try to aim for the average, I'd say around 20 to 25 hours total? Idk, this just depends on too many variables to be honest. Maybe other people can comment here with how many hours they took to redesign their portfolios.
@@LearnUpstairs Thank you. That's actually not that much time. I myself have to prepare a new updated portfolio, but I have some other projects too that take me time..so I was wandering how much time people dedicate to such portfolios. They are beautiful btw...
I've been wondering, most of the architects out there are using vray rendering engine , but I'm more comfortable with blender , is there any adventages that vray has over blender? Thank you ....
The biggest advantage would be that Vray can be used in software like Sketchup. And Sketchup is much more "architecture friendly" than Blender. Meaning that you can actually design and preview volumes in Skp, whereas in a more technical software like Blender you're there only to visualize and that's it.
I can't entirely agree when you say that it's just adding more pages to Avantika's portfolio...sometimes there's a size limit for submissions, so people tend to make it shorter, so I don't think this was the problem, the problem was the use of darker colors, and, of course, breathable spaces, which she could achieve reducing the size of some drawings...if it's digital, the size doesn't matter because you can zoom in. I would never make a portfolio to be only digital though.
Does every university require portfolio for enrollment in masters degree in architecture or or related facilties even we if have 5 years bachelor's degree in architecture and job experiences?
No some university don’t require a portfolio but most do, instead they request for a 1500-2000 word personal statement. Western Australia does not require a portfolio for masters
Hey Serkan, which links are you referring to? The portfolio ones? I just tested it again and they are working fine for me. I'm not sure what's happening then :/ And tank you for the feedback, more videos like this one coming up in the future!
I'm using a wired earbuds from AKG. But it's not that I chose it, it was laying around here. It has decent quality and fits somewhat alright. I tried some wireless ones, but they all have some slight delay that for me was perceptive when editing videos.
I've been feeling lost... I don't feel like continuing my architecture degree and its very hectic and can't handle this anymore since I'm also having some medical issues ... But what I feel like doing is "freelancing" I'm highly motivated by your videos ..... What should I do?
what software do you recommend to create your portfolio? I'm thinking to create some sheets using photoshop and then create a pdf file to apploud it on Issuu. any recommendations?
Hey Gabriela, we know! We're also from South America. 😅 It would be a real shame to commit this mistake. But along with the Buenos Aires city map there is a map from the continent of Africa. It's smaller and there's only one project placed there. But you can check it out at the minute mark 19:58 It's the project "Ecomoyo" referred on the pages 42-45
I'm pretty sure it was either Photoshop or Illustrator. But Axel has made a comment here too, so try replying to his comment and hopefully he will tell us 😀
The portfolios are uploaded to the website ISSUU, and they are in PDF format. I've added all the links in the video description if you'd like to check them out
