More than anyone, you've shown what a "Swiss army knife" and sound-designer's playground this synth is - thank you. I'm happy to report that I snagged one of the discounted ones that have now sold out here in the US (shipped yesterday). This will be my first synth with generous physical controls and a proper mod matrix. I feel very fortunate!
My favorite thing to do on on any synth is to turn off the sequencer and just play around with the arpeggiator - using different combinations of notes and arp modes - then go nuts on the knobs, etc. That’s when I feel most like I’m playing an instrument and just letting the creative flow take me where it leads.
Briljant trip in to the depth of the Six. I had no idea how I was going to hang on to the session, but then the hypnotizing sounds came an initiated a drift towards to the modulating chambers . Thanks for leading the way.
As a young, gigging keyboard player in 1987, the DX7 was my first synth. Only used the presets. And FM was still an impenetrable mystery when I finally started to get interested in synthesis a few years ago. But I keep coming back to the opsix. Almost every video - especially yours - draws me in with beautiful, deep sounds I thought you’d need a modular system to get close to making. FM still scares me, but I think I might have to get one. The sound of this thing!
Just ordered one today after the massive price drop. After watching a few of your videos and seeing just what's possible with this synth, it was a no-brainer.
Reverb listed nearly 1000 available when I found the sale. It was dropping like a stone. There was bump back up that may have been non-US customer orders being cancelled, buying by mistake. Anyhow, I think they were all gone in less than 12 hours… And yes, one of them is headed my way! I’ve been glued to OS’s videos since, learning all I can while I wait!

@@immersiveworlds I haven't gotten a shipping notification yet, or any acknowledgement from Korg when I messaged them on Reverb. I'm in the US *and* I ordered within 30 minutes of getting the sale announcement eblast from Reverb. Not sure what's going on :/

Love the sound and the look of this thing. Reminiscent of their MS2000. Just bought one(Nov. 2023)after saying I wouldn’t buy another synth for a while after buying a Prophet Rev2, but-there ya go ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ but it’s like they cut these in half so that more of us FM heads could share them.😂😂😂 I want the other half too😂😂😂

This just further confirms that this belongs in my setup, I basically do experimental music and am always looking for ways to morph together the sounds I'm trying to pull out of my head
I'm pretty sure this was one of the videos that ended up deciding which synth I would buy between the modwave and opsix. Still have the desire for a modwave, but I'm so happy I dived into this deep well of a synth first.
I don't know if you are still reading these comments.... But, I must say that this video is the most interesting of all the videos about the Opsix that I have seen so far. (and that is quite a lot) Most importantly, this video motivated me to buy the Opsix, even though I had absolutely no plans to do so. I have here Super6, SE02, Hydra, RefaceDX.... and the Opsix can hold its own. It has character, which is astounding given the packaging (The product manager should be tarred and feathered for the keyboard hardware). Thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks for watching and I'm glad you liked what I was showing. I genuinely believe that the opsix is a certified future classic. Plenty of other opsix videos on this channel where I try to push it a little further.
It's a shame how much the Opsix was undersold and misunderstood, especially with the "FM made easy" stereotype. This was my first ever synth and I feel like I won't need anything else for a long time other than my digital piano for piano stuff. I'm really hoping more people discover the potential and that KORG will keep manufacturing and supporting this amazing synth. EDIT: I just read further below that it's not necessarily discontinued but that there was a fire sale
Beautiful patch and sequence. I agree - the Opsix is highly underrated, and I've no idea why it's discontinued. I'm just lucky to have got it on the big discount as they stopped production.
Thanks. Although it's not actually discontinued - it was only in the US that there was that big fire sale, as of right now it's still a current product and in stock in most places outside of the US. I have no idea why they did what they did there 🤷
@Oscillator Sink that's great to know - this synth needs to have a long lifespan. I heard the rumor, and haven't been able to find it anywhere after they sold out. It seems lots of retailers are claiming it's no more. So wierd, but it's prob all the crappy supply chain stuff.
In my opinion - the Digitone sounds punchier and more impactful, if that's that you need, but the opsix can just do more. The synthesis engine is incredibly flexible and can do very beautiful things. But that's not the whole story because, of course, much of what makes the Digitone special is related to the close integration between the synth engine and the sequencer, and it's 8 part multitimbral. They're almost not worth comparing because they excel in such different areas. They're both really lovely though.
@@OscillatorSink I do actually have a digitone now - should've said :) just getting to grips. I am happy I know how to record 6/8 :) it's a great fun box. Just need to find more sounds that suit me but I've only been exploring the stock patches and making my first couple... Love them LFOs. I love the four on my summit but yer right that sequencer is making it a different animal

hello and thanks for this video that definitively made me the decision to buy one. To join your comment in the comparision I owned a Digitakt not FM but sampling version some years and it is really greatful. My question is for the edition companion. I understood Opsix Native vst is not an editor, so is there is one exisqting? I also owned a MODX of which the FM engine and the sound generator appears to me significantly above, maybe caused by a more important polyphony. But the machine stayed too far an alien to me due to a too complex and non direct enough interface compared to Opsix that I resold my MODX.
Is the Opsix officially discontinued? I’m a guitarist who wants to create these epic ambient sounds and looking for my first synth. Sad to see this one is no longer available???
It's not discontinued and also there are newer bigger versions too. It's in stock all over Europe for example. The fire-sale only happened in the US - I don't know why.

@@OscillatorSink is this link for the patches you're going through around 40ish min mark, the project you're mentioning (did that come out) and the related patches? I'd see that vid yesterday before this one and didn't recognise the sounds.

The envelopes are described on the opsix more "traditionally" as times. The longest last for 90 seconds, the shortest clip the side off of a sine of it's not starting with its phase at 0. A high rate on the dx7 would translate to a short time on the opsix.
@@PRODUCEDBYLILDOUG the level menu for each operator has the level EG. By default the operator pitch and the filter are controlled by EG 1 and 2 respectively - these are accessed in the Mod menu (although you'll need to assign an envelope depth in the Pitch and filter menus). If you're trying to understand the basic sound design workflow I suggest taking a look at my "let's build a pad" video for the Opsix - this is all covered there.
Could you expand on what you mean? Do you mean that you want to have notes ring out longer? Or do you mean that some notes are being cut off by other notes?
It sounds like you're talking about the envelopes of the operators - if you want the note to ring out, you need to increase the release portion of operators' envelopes. @@OscillatorSink he is saying that it keeps repeating the last chord/arp you pressed.. is it the sequencer or some sort of a hold function of the opsix?
