That's called a single point of failure system and it's the bane of modern design. It is not difficult to design a spade rudder that won't sink the boat. But that's what happens when engineering decisions are made by accountants.

Spade rudder boats are for coastal waters only, if even then. Its not just this issue, but when it hits something (logs, containers, reef etc) it will rip out of the boat and leave a big hole behind. Nobody sane sails blue water with spade rudders
@Dryer_Safe
@Dryer_Safe 4 месяца назад
@@rykehuss3435 I personally agree, but it comes down to preference. Some sailors want to sail fast. Look at racing designs. The rudder is hung on the transom. If it breaks, you remove it, fix it, replace it, all in perfect safety. Vs catamaran designs for example. A disaster waiting to happen. One bump and the rudder top can break through the hull and you get a 2 foot crack you can't plug.

Having bulkheads around the crowbar sticking in the hull a rudder represents should be doable. Many boat have all the same construction, something hits it and a big hole in the hull is the result. This way of building it lowers the production cost.

I'm glad the crew are safe and I'm sorry for their loss. I hope in the near future an investigation comes from this that can reduce the probability of such a failure in the future. It's good that the crew captured video of the failure location. That can answer a lot of questions. As a mechanical engineer, I am surprised at the condition of the break. It makes me think more about the assertions of some owners and designers that spade rudders (like the on on this boat, and mine as well) are less robust than more traditional designs.

The problem isn't /wasn't just that it was a spade rudder, the problem was that the manufacturer used an aluminum rudder shaft to save weight (aluminum doesn't have to sheer strength for this application) and owing to the known vulnerability of spade rudders failed to include a watertight bulkhead to isolate the rudder stock throughhull should a failure (collision) occur. Other boats with spade rudders have suffered similar damage and not sunk, because they were designed to survive such an event.

This is heart breaking. I found this from the most recent video uploaded by _Sailing Uma_ who are refitting their Pearson 36 currently, and installing a series of watertight bulkheads. The point was made that a lot of production boats these days have spade rudders, which are vulnerable to this kind of damage and tearing a major hole in the hull, and don't have any kind of subdivision, so if it happens it's uncontrollable flooding, and the boat will founder. It's kind of crazy, these companies are literally building death traps worthy of Boeing.

Looks like a fatigue failure that initiated at the aft end of the post. Probably a difficult place to inspect, but I wonder how long it took to work through the post and ultimately fail. Days, weeks, months.. longer? A reminder to carefully inspect all critical hardware for signs of even tiny hairline cracks periodically. Chainplates, turnbuckles, pad eyes, fairleads, stanchions, blocks, ... rudder posts, etc. Even if no crack is detectable, damage, wear, heavy scratches, etc. can be initiation points. The loads on a boat are very cyclic and a most things will fail from fatigue eventually. Such a dramatic sight to see your boat slip under. Heartbreaking, but glad all were safe.

Is it known at least approximately the position of the sunken? I think this ship hit something with its rudder. The rudder shaft is located in the so-called tunnel and has 2-3 bearings. The video shows that the shaft dances as if there is nothing holding it.

Right, this peice of metal got stressed by something really big to break like this. Otherwise, failure to do inspection and look at it to prevent this but I mean you would hear it rub…! In all cases be safe out there

To me it looks like the shaft has failed where the taper meets the parallel section where the steering quadrant bolts

There are only two bearings! At a distance of just under 50 -70 cm from each other. Below this, the spade rudder is free hanging and probably goes up to 160 cm below the waterline. THERE is the problem, namely the enormous leverage forces (1st year engineering or physics lessons.) Anyone who buys something like this should not be surprised at these unfortunately terrible processes. And they are not that rare. No yacht with a rudder on the skeg, standing on the skeg foot and triple bearing has ever sunk because of this. This should finally be understood at some point.
@mattz1230
@mattz1230 4 месяца назад
@@thomasescape3002 EXACTLY!!!! Everything you wrote is 100% fact! A Proper Bluewater Cruiser will never have this casualty. It will have a skeg or keel hung rudder. Even if the steering brakes, a good crew can steer because the rudder didn't literally fall out of the boat. That rudder is almost 2 meters on an Arcona. This is a flaw that WILL happen to every one of them eventually.

I'd like to know how that failed. Rudder forces on a sailing vessel should not be that high. Did they get rammed by an orca? That has actually been happening.

How on earth was that boat not designed with a water tight compartment around the rudder stock? On a boat with a spade rudder / no skeg that is a terrible oversight.

Swedish steel? Or from some other country? Hmmm... Edit: Nope, I've just read in a report by Practical Boat Owner that it was an aluminium rudder stock.

Why isn't that area where the rudder stock is sealed with a water tight bulkhead? To me if designing a boat that would be an obvious inclusion in the design, especially for an exposed rudder

Always carry a crash bilge pump, there have, large bladers, that inflate like a life raft. Close the rooms off, pull the cord. Room is filled with a inflatable bubble. Like a yago ball big bigger. Rags, jammed in a hole, will slow it. Even those wide, rubber stripes , they can be used underwater, a quick hull wipe, slap a bandaid over the hole. Always have, hull wood plugs,. Hope they removed what was important.... Glad they were smart with buddy boats... The insurance guy still going to say it can be fixed😂

I am really curious about the root cause. If any part seems unlikely to fail it is the rudder stock, even in harsh consitions.
@Marinereviews
@Marinereviews 4 месяца назад
Well a lot of accidents happen due to (part) submerged containers. If they got unlucky and hit one just with the rudder it could create a lot of damage in a very short time. The 460 have a single very long rudder quite far from the keel.

I disagree it looks like it snapped and then rubbed together to create this smooth edge. It broke like an arrow like you would snap a stick in two. There is no side more damaged than the other.

Root cause was a poor purchase decision. They wanted fast and maneuverable and cheap, instead of strong. Ocean doesn't care about how fast you are, how quick you can turn or how much you spent.
