Arctic Adventure: Hiking into Gates of the Arctic National Park

The only ways into Gates of the arctic national park are to fly or figure out your own hiking or boating trip... we chose to hike. From Wiseman, we drove as close as we could along Nolan Rd, then hike the rest of the way in through the bogs. We only saw squirrels and grouse, but we did see bear poo.

we hiked in to the lake in the summer of 22.There was a cool little jewlery shop in Wiseman, bought my wife a Lynx dewclaw necklace there.

wait, you need to take a class to hike in there ? I keep seeing people parking along the Dalton Highway and enter the park without doing that. Is this because you started at Coldfoot ?

I don't think the training was required but recommended by the Park Service. It's a short video training that adresses the unique needs of the park in order to protect the park along with protecting yourself.

Great video! How long did the hike take you to complete? Did you stay the night in Coldfoot?

It took us a few hours. We stayed the night in Wiseman but got food in Coldfoot.

Just a heads up, I live and mine up here and that road is not passable anymore. Also the nearest tow trucks are 300 miles South in Fairbanks and they won’t come out the road. The government pretty much shut down all the locals gold mining . And with climate change the permafrost and underlying ice lenses are melting so the road is dropping. I’m glad you got to visit the are! Nice video

Jay, are you talking about the road from Wiseman to Nolan? Since when has it not been passable? I appreciated your video about federal lands by the way.

@@fbankswise Hi thanks! After the rain last fall (2022) the road got in really bad shape. Several Jeeps and big 4x4 trucks ran in and out before and during hunting season leaving some bad ruts in some areas with no drainage. I will eventually fix the road with equipment as I develop my mining claims up there, but it’s going to be a few years🇺🇸

@@jayarmstrong3848 thanks for the info, I was up there in a Jeep to hike almost a year ago & loved it. The road wasn't great but we made it. Do you have a Facebook/IF or Twitter I can follow so I can ask you about conditions next time I adventure to my favorite place in the world?
