It is June in Varanger, and up on the tundra, snow still blankets the ground. The weather has made a turn for the worse, but despite snowflakes falling from the sky, the arrival of migrating birds is announced by an orchestra of varied bird songs. In this three-part series, I explore what Varanger has to offer of Arctic specialists. Come behind the scenes of bird photography to join the adventure and see how the trip unfolds!
The species I photograph in this video include red-necked phalarope, dunlin, ruff, common ringed plover, golden plover, red fox, long-tailed skua, white-tailed eagle and long tailed duck.

Wow - again - as usual! I love watching your videos and continue to be inspired by them. By the way, you make me cold just watching you lay on the windblown snow! You must have some pretty impressing cold-weather gear! Looking forward to your next video. :)

Thanks so much! Haha, I was not prepared for such cold temperatures 😅 I only brought a cap instead of a proper hat, since I thought June would at least have plus degrees…

@@TobiasGjerde I know what you mean! There are times that I encounter cold weather when photographing birds, and I think of the warm gear hanging in my closet at home!

Once again, mind-blowing results from a stunning part of the world (nothing like that here in the UK!). I just love the feel that your high-key images create.
@TobiasGjerde

Thank you so much! It is a truly unique part of the world, since you have an Arctic climate, fauna and flora so accessible to the public. But the UK has some truly special wildlife spectacles too!

Thanks a lot! Yes, jaeger is another name for skua, but it’s the same species (Stercorarius longicaudus)

Another wonderful video Tobias! Thousands of Long-tailed ducks overwinter on Lake Ontario here in Canada but the males are in their winter plumage. Although it too is striking, it is nice to see your images of a male in its breeding colours.

Oh wow! That sounds so cool! I would honestly say I prefer their wintering plumage, but I have yet to photograph such a male. And thanks a lot!

Just discovered your channel and subscribed! Your narration and enthusiasm really complement the beautiful birds and scenery! Many of these birds are now migrating into my area, and we rarely see them in their breeding plumage. You're fortunate enough to have this experience!

Great footage Tobias! What I found interesting is the Godwit's beak just after minute 1. The Godwit seemed to be able to curl the beak up and then it was straight again. I never saw this. Do you know if this is normal?
@TobiasGjerde
@TobiasGjerde 7 месяцев назад
Thanks a lot! Yes, this is a unique adaptation in (some?) wading birds. They can curl up the tip of their beak, and I believe this is to easier grip prey in the sand. I’ve seen it with yawning purple sandpipers as well

Once again, amazing photos! I made the same trip in 2022... did you manage to get decent red-throat pipit shots? Because I fehlt like that was the most difficult species to capture!

Thanks a lot! I had very minimal success with the red-throated pipits. I only got a few documentation worthy images
