Alex Turner does a great job singing this; it's not an easy song to pull off. Amy's music sounds easy enough on the ear, but it is full of musical/emotional tonal trips and modulations.
The pronouns, the song, the singer, the bassist, the guitarist, the drummer, the band, the rhythm, the everything, it's amazing and it's only a cover. THE COVER.
@@jacktangent It's the fact he keeps the he/him pronouns of the original song instead of changing them to being she/her like some people do when singing covers. Also I completely agree with OP. It's truly THE COVER.
I have so much more respect for Alex Turner and the rest of the band after hearing this. It's a song explicitly about a relationship with a man, and he did it fabulously. Not only did he not try to change the pronouns-- honestly, I don't know how they would've managed it in a song like this-- there's this subtle thing: in Amy Winehouse's version, the lyric is "You tear men down like Roger Moore"; here, he distinctly says "You tear ME down like Roger Moore". This could be a simple misheard word, but I think he meant to make that change, affirming that he's singing the song as a man, as opposed to singing it from a woman character's perspective (something Pearl Jam does often). Honestly, that means so much to me: there are so few songs about same-sex relationships, you know? And that these guys, who I'm fairly sure identify as straight, were mature enough to cover this song and do it right... I don't know, it's something I appreciate. Also: great tune.
Well, Roger Moore is best known for his stint as James Bond, who has a kind of misogyny that some women find appealing even though they know it's not good for them, so it would not make sense for the word "men" to be in Amy's lyrics.
way different song... considering nirvana and AM are my most favorite bands ever... they made a song called “rape me” (yes it’s very severe) but kurt (the main vocalist/“face of the band”) wrote the song about pieces of shit that obviously do shit like this... it just reminded me how they both didn’t give a fuck who would care and really made a point
vertigoEdits, good people? So what if people change the pronouns or don't change them! It's still the bloody same song. Seriously people these days with all this bullshit.
+Sebastian Johnson dude, YOU just don't care. and that's fine. it's a little stupid, but still fine because it's (mostly) harmless. but you're in no place to say it's bullshit when people do care about something that is ONLY a positive thing. that's when it's not harmless. try thinking deeper (for once) and wonder why not changing pronouns is a good thing
+vertigoEdits, How is not changing the pronouns a positive thing? People always change the pronouns and even little words when they are covering song. It truly does not matter if they say he or she it is a cover it is meant to be at least a bit different the way they sing it.
Meet you dowstairs in the bar and hurt, Your rolled up sleeves in your skull t-shirt, You say 'What did you do with him today?', And sniffed me out like I was Tanqueray, 'Cause you're my fella my guy, Hand me your Stella and fly, By the time I'm out the door, You tear men down like Roger Moore, I cheated myself, Like I knew I would, I told you I was trouble, You know that I'm no good, Upstairs in bed with my ex boy, He's in a place but I can't get joy, Thinking on you in the final throes, This is when my buzzer goes, Run out to meet you, chips and pitta, You say 'when we married', 'cause you're not bitter, 'There'll be none of him no more', I cried for you on the kitchen floor, I cheated myself, Like I knew I would, I told you I was trouble, You know that I'm no good, Sweet reunion Jamaica and Spain, We're like how we were again, I'm in the tub, you on the seat, Lick your lips as I soap my feet, Then you notice like carpet burn, My stomach drop and my guts churn, You shrug and it's the worst, Who truly stuck the knife in first I cheated myself, Like I knew I would, I told you I was trouble, You know that I'm no good, I cheated myself Like I knew I would I told you I was trouble, You know that I'm no good.
I've always thought they'd do a good cover of lily Allen - smile Its to the point where I can almost hear it in my head and I don't know if they actually did it at some point
I always imagine myself singing this at a low lighting, small stage in a bar down the street, with a stool next to me consisting of an ash tray with cigarette butts put out, and a quarter full glass of fine whiskey
It's a good cover! They didn't change the lyrics or the rhythm. I think this is as good as the original. *of course, Alex doesn't have Amy's voice. Perhaps that's why it sound a bit rare
I really appreciate this cover, especially since they didn't change the pronouns. I love Amy and never have i heard a cover of this song that didn't make me want to kill whoever was singing except this one. They did a great job and i like the twist of Alex's voice.
