Learn how to use the OLED SSD1320 160x80px connected to Arduino UNO using either the IIC or SPI connection. This display is very unusal and at certain angles, looks like a mirror.

Normal oleds have a polarizing filter on top to increase contrast. If you peel this filter off you can turn any oled into a mirror one. I did this a few years ago on a screen whose filter got really scratched up and liked the look so I just never replaced the filter.

Thank you for the clarification, do you have any photos of your display? Also, do you know if there is any real technical advantage of having such display?
@sjm4306
@sjm4306 7 месяцев назад
@@upir_upir I still have it somewhere, probably still packed since I moved into a new house. I'll see if I can find it and link a picture. As for an advantage, not really other than maybe aesthetics (at the cost of visibility). I guess technically it's twice as bright for the same current draw since polarizers cut roughly half incoming unpolarized light.

It's really good to see this explanation around memory usage. I find that Arduino boards can often be challenging to developers just starting with this kind of hardware, counting RAM in KB is definitely a major limitation (compared to say the MBs you often find on ESP32 boards). It's even more difficult with ATtiny chips, e.g. an ATtiny85 has 8KB of flash and 512B of RAM if I remember correctly. Power consumption for these chips is fantastic though!
@upir_upir
@upir_upir 7 месяцев назад
Thank you, I´m glad you like it. And you are correct about the ATtiny85, since I´m currently working on a project using this chip. Plus, if you use bootloader, it´s only 6KB of Flash.. anyway, expect a video soon..

It's just a normal OLED without polarizer, the polarizer ages in the air, so the producer always skip the last step, and leave it for the reseller to install the polarizer and protective film. You can just peel off the gray plastic film on a normal OLED and it will become like this one. The polarizer is for reduce reflection.

Thank you for the clarification, someone had pointed this out earlier in the comments. It’s just unusual to be able to get the display without the polarizer. I wonder if you can also get the polarizer alone and apply it. Would it be similar to just using a sticker, or is there any special equipment required? I will definitely try to remove this layer from one of my OLED display.

I saw similar displays on some rear-view mirrors. But it was a cheaper configuration, without OLED - the mirror surface was “above” the display and caused significant interference for both the rear-view and for the display itself.
@upir_upir
@upir_upir 7 месяцев назад
I believe in that case, the display is mounted under an actual mirror.
@0hellow797

Put a second two way mirror on top and you could get a sick infinity effect!
@upir_upir

I guess the mirror has to be below the display, right?

You can make most OLED's mirror-like like this one by peeling off the front polarizer.

Nah, it would reflect the same amount of light regardless if the pixels are lit or unlit. What you see in the reflection is the electrode structure evaporated on the glass.

How to display images on oled display from sd card module?

Store images on sd card > read data with Arduino > draw those on display. Wokwi actually have some examples, let me find it..

only reason to use something like that would be a smart mirror, but for that it's too small.

There is not advantage to this type of display - they just don't put the anti-glare film on it.

@upir_upir 7 месяцев назад
Yep, I have already found out based on the previous comments. I haven´t found out if you can buy the polarizer film alone and if you can also apply it without any special equipment. That said, I still like the unusual mirror look of the display - and the brightness.
@VEC7ORlt
@VEC7ORlt 7 месяцев назад
@@upir_upir I don't think its a polarizer, its an anti glare film - different structure and function. Pretty sure you can find some online, as for applying - the classic - soapy water and queeze out the bubbles.

It definitely looks very unusual, I´m sure there are some projects where it would fit the aesthetics. But I´m also sure there are many projects where it does not make any sense to have this display.
