I have 3 of the Opta RS-485 sitting on my desk at work, and a Portenta just about to arrive, for a project with a customer, I love the industry standard box with Arduino Scetch and PLC capabilities and hope I get more projects with them in the future.

Big miss at 134$ though. Automation direct sells arduino plcs for 69$ and 8 channel cards for 48$ each, getting in is a little bit more $ but your going to get 4 more outputs for 165$ and you could add a ton more io as well as breaking out other pins on the arduino. Oh and you know basic things like lights for the i/o so someone can actually troubleshoot the device. It can also be programmed with the original arduino ide. If this was just a little lower around 80 or even 100$ it could be a huge value.

Agreed, the led indicator topic is an issue. Don't want your electrician calling you for simple trouble shooting because he cant see the IOs. However, being European, Finder is a brand that resonates more than AD and shipping costs from the US kinda cancel that out.

Well inline with genuine Arduino pricing. They take much bigger risk entering this market.

Thanks for the interesting video. The shots, when the device was in your hands, had a lot of struggle being in focus. I generally like background blur - and in the beauty shots it works out nicely - but in changing conditions as the handheld ones, it would really benefit to raise the aperture-value, so that the focal point is a bit more forgiving. It would enable us to see what you currently want to show us and not what the camera momentarily tries to focus… Nice lens btw.
@JakobSagatowski

The Arduino OPTA PLC looks nice. However the AutomationDirect P1AM-100 ProductivityOpen Arduino-compatible CPU has lots of expandable add-on modules. The PIAM does not use a PLC language but it programs easy. 😎 Thanks for the great info and I might try a OPTA out?

I'm skeptical bc the electrical specs aren't in place like for the machine control board. Is the CANbus galvanic isolated? Or are the binary IO isolated? None isolated ports are creating more problems most people are aware of. The PLC is advertised for building automation. The fieldbus ModBus is for building automation a very basic level . KNX, BACNet or LonWorks are a necessity. The OTA update is a feature for amateurs. Expanding the system with IO-Modules isn't a part of of the system. The smallest PLC from Wago or Beckhoff aren't that expensive and offering more. For controlling a DIY Pick and Place machine or a 3D printer, a uC or Raspberry PI are better suited. Playing with electrical installation is for most people a No No, bc most people don't know how to comply with electrical installation regulations, which has implications for insurance. For professionals this is a toy. The DIY scene is presenting mostly a jungle of wires. Cabinets with DIN C-Rails and cable conduits are unknown. An exception is the Voron 3D-printer scene. I wouldn't recommend a PLC at all, because amateurs will burn down housing.

@@JakobSagatowski You will always miss I/O. That's why you have RS485. And from the "standard" Arduino you have SPI, I2C, 1-Wire, RS232. You could enter the field of electronics, but that's probably not why you choose a PLC class device. :)

Interesting video Jakob. Perhaps you could look at DigiRail NXprog manufactured by Novus Automation which is programmed using the Arduino IDE. It features I/O 2AI / 2AO / 4DI / 2RL or 3DO and DIN rail mount. It has a USB programming port, RS485 (Modbus RTU master/slave) and ethernet (Modbus TCP). The AI can be programmed to have thermocouples, RTD's, NTC and 0-10V or 0-20mA signals connected to it. Expansion of I/O can be through Modbus connectivity.

Can this device be used to output variable voltage? Example, I would code it to output voltage from 0-10v depending on outside temperature to say a VFD drive. Or does it not have that ability? Another question, can it output a PWM signal? Typically I'd use an Uno to output a PWM signal 0-5 volt to a DAC module. Wondering if I could just use this device to do the same, or is it just an on/off switch?

Tackar och bockar! I'm probably right in the crosshair for this product, building interactive installations for museums and such. For us "proper" PLC:s have way too much overhead in their tooling/development environments, and going the "maker-arduino" route is labor intensive and error prone unless you design your own PCB:s. (especially for stuff on tour) Controllino and Siemens Logo are our weapons of choice right now, but it seems like the Opta has taken the worst of both worlds. No built-in HMI as found in the Logo, and no transistor/analog outputs as found in the Controllino. ...but what about the AUX port on the right side of the unit? Could there be expansion units coming? :D Also, if it fits the scope of your next video I'd love to hear if it supports OTA updates of regular Arduino sketches without going via the cloud.
@JakobSagatowski

Hey Johnny, If you're looking for other PLC options try Click, BRX, or Productivity Suite (Automation Direct). In my experience they've been a lot more budget friendly robust units for small scale/prototype projects. I haven't been able to try an OPTA yet but looking forward to it however these are just some secondary options that may work for you!
@intedinmammaffs

How open is the software/hardware is on this? For example, maybe I can program it using the arduino IDE but is there complete software intended for that use, or is that just an alternative "from scratch" way of using it? Are there any closed-source or "black box" elements that I would not be able to modify or debug myself if needed? I am not very familiar with the Arduino world although I have used the IDE once, for an attiny85 application. thanks

@JakobSagatowski Год назад
I'm really curious of what they will use the "AUX" to in the future.
@xFuaZe
@xFuaZe Год назад
@@JakobSagatowski on the video of "Finder UK" they list "Port for auxiliary module". Does the "AUX" fold away and expose any pins or connector? My first guess would be that it's currently used to flash the bootloader (ICSP header) and if so it would be connected to hardware SPI. This would also allow to connect simple I/O expanders with shift registers.

@bluegizmo1983 Год назад
At that price though, not including a USB-C cable is just a slap in the face! ... Not that it would be worth it if the cable was included though, it's just offensive that they wouldn't even include a $1 cable at that price.
