Learn how to code a 7 segment display with Arduino in this helpful tutorial. Perfect for beginners in the world of robotics and electronics!
In this video of our Arduino tutorials and Arduino projects playlist, we'll discuss 7 segment display and create a small application where the 7-segment display blinks.
A 7-segment display is a widely used electronic display device for displaying decimal numerals and some alphabetic characters. It is composed of seven LED segments that can be individually illuminated to form various digits and characters.
A typical 7-segment display consists of segments labeled as follows:
----- a -----

f b

----- g -----

e c

----- d ------
Each segment (a, b, c, d, e, f, g) is an LED that can be turned on or off to create different characters.
a, b, c, d, e, f, g segments: These are used in various combinations to display numbers and some letters.
dp (decimal point): An additional LED for showing the decimal point.
The segments needed to display each number are as follows:
0: a, b, c, d, e, f
1: b, c
2: a, b, d, e, g
3: a, b, c, d, g
4: b, c, f, g
5: a, c, d, f, g
6: a, c, d, e, f, g
7: a, b, c
8: a, b, c, d, e, f, g
9: a, b, c, d, f, g
7-segment displays are used in digital clocks, calculators, counters, measuring instruments, and many other devices. They are easy to use and cost-effective, making them popular in various electronic projects.
A 7-segment display can be configured in two ways:
Common Anode: All the positive terminals (anodes) of the segments are connected together and each segment's negative terminal (cathode) is controlled individually.
Common Cathode: All the negative terminals (cathodes) of the segments are connected together and each segment's positive terminal (anode) is controlled individually.
The configuration determines how the voltage is applied to light up the segments.
In summary, 7-segment displays are a simple and effective way to display numbers and some letters, widely used in various electronic applications.
