I bought a Johnny Apple Peeler and started using it this fall and OMG it is a game changer. In the past I would wind up peeling and then you have to do something to keep apples from turning brown until you’ve peeled them all. Then slice them. Corer/flat wedging cutters often are very hard to handle, and if you like more even slices for pie, it’s less functional. No electricity required. It took a few apples to get the hang of it, and it does not work well on soft fruit. But if you like to make apple pie, or anything else where you might use a lot of fresh apples and need even slices, this thing is amazing. You can use it to peel potatoes too.

I also use my OXO apple corer to slice potatoes for oven fries. I then split the potato core into two slices. Perfectly sliced everytime. I may have picked up this tip from another reviewer...

I saw those crank style ones at savers all the time. I finally gave in and got one, while I was in the aisle a lady came up to me and said “trust me, you’ll never use it”. I was convinced I would and bought it anyway. 5 years later she was right….

I have been making ATK's French Apple tart and have been using the crank-style to peel the apples, but I still have to core and then slice them up. I think Lisa's comment that they BOTH have a place in the kitchen is very appropriate. The recipe is awesome and both tools make the pie much easier to prep.

I found the Johnny Apple version took off more apple while peeling than other manufacturers. Suction is easier than the ones that clamp on a table. This year I bought the KA corer, peeler, slicer attachment. GAME CHANGER! Well worth the price, which isn’t true for all KA accessories.

I bought a Pampered Chef Apple Peeler Corer over 20 years ago an still use it today. It clamps on to the edge of a table or counter and works exactly like the NorPro. I'll be picking up that NorPro Grip 16-wedge maker.

Peeling apples is never easy…for me. I’ve not had use of one hand for nearly 16 years. I’ve had the push type for years and have learned how to do them one-handed. Need to consider getting a crank style.

I take off the corer blade on the Johnny Apple peeler so it just peels. Then I use the 16 slice wedger. It makes the slices bigger for pies! its two steps but amazing results.

Push type are great if you are going to eat the apple slices raw, but for cooking, the crank units cannot be topped. I have owned one for around a decade now and use it every time I am making apple pies or apple sauce, both of which I will be making soon now that apple prices have come back down to reality.

Honestly, most push slicers will work. I bought a generic one from a local grocery store and had it for years. Works great. You don't have to go for brand names and spend extra money to find a good one.

My Granddaughters see them as “FUN!”. For three or more apples, the cranky-cranky is handy. For 1 or 2 apples, a knife does the job. And, BTW, I don’t peel any of my apples. Why throw away vitamins and flavor? Courtesy of Half Vast Flying

The push style gets dull easily and can not be sharpened. Neither works well with apples that have any sort of misshape - common if you have your own apple tree. Still it you need to process lots of apples equipment is worth it.

Can the crank style apple peeler be used to peel oranges?
@terebrown2892
@terebrown2892 7 месяцев назад
Id like to know this also, but I'm afraid it would probably leave more pithe on than you'd want, and going back over again would defeat the purpose? Or maybe not, depending888⁸8⁸⁸ how many oranges we're talking a😮bout and the intend😢ed use. I got a used Johnny peeler years ago , no directions, but could never get the apples centered and they came off crooked,... Really crooked. Then last fall I was watching one of Tipper's videos from her channel about Appalachian culture and history and hers were coming off crooked, but she just kept on going!!! Any hints or tips to get them centered, or do y'all just keep on going also?

@@terebrown2892 Some things are best done by hand. I don't see any professional bakers or chefs using these gadgets. Definition of a gadget: something that works fine in the hands of the seller but not in your own.

I haven't tried it, but in theory if you remove the coring blade from a crank-style, you should be able to (mostly) peel an orange. In practice, the rind will probably be too tough, and the interior too soft, to get decent results.
@laurao3274
@laurao3274 7 месяцев назад
I've never tried using it on a soft fruit, but I'm gonna have to guess no. 1) The way the peeler blade is, I'd have to imagine it won't work on something with a thicker peel like citrus fruit. 2) Oranges don't have a solid core, which means there'd be nothing for the spikes to hold. The fruit has to be pretty firmly on the spikes for the machine to do its job.

@laurao3274
@laurao3274 7 месяцев назад
I'm normally very averse to unitaskers, but I recently made an accepting for one of these. Now that I have 2 kids, soon to be 3, I can be cutting 3 or more apples at a time. It saves time for me to use it instead of a knife. And when you're prepping a hundred things for a day trip, time is of the essence.
@lizcademy4809
@lizcademy4809 7 месяцев назад
A unitasker is only a waste of money/space if you rarely use it. Most people own a corkscrew - definitely a unitasker! But it's the only tool that will do its job, so unless you **never** open wine bottles, you need one. What about a garlic press? You could just use your knife ... but most cooks need to mash garlic often enough that it's worth having the press. So, if you need to cut, core and maybe peel apples often, these tools are worth owning. Maybe you have an apple tree or two and want to use the fruit. Or you end up making 12 apple pies a year, plus other apple desserts. And also make potato dishes that could benefit from this type of cut ... in that case, the devices make sense. Me? I have to eat low carb, I don't eat apples, potatoes are a cheat food. I will not be buying either of these.

How many peeled apples do people need? I've made 2 apple pies in the last 45 years. Even if I made 1 per year, it wouldn't justify having that contraption taking up space.
