Very interesting video this one Kevin, for three reasons; that question I think all artists battle with - how to know when a piece is finished, listening to you talking about some of your pieces and seeing some more of your brilliant work. I personally really like the Trefoil Knots, particularly Moonshine, which I believe is made from copper? Charged particle is another of my favorites. Respect to you and your family, David

You are correct, Moonshine is made out of copper pipe. A friend dropped off an old solar hot water panel and it had ten foot long 3-inch diameter copper pipes!

I bet Carol doesn't know she got a "used" sculpture. We won't tell her! :-) She love's it so much we're considering moving it already to be next to the TV so she can watch it all of the time! But to answer your question, the answer is only when the piece is out of the hands of the artist so they can't "tweak" it anymore! But I do find it interesting when I've "finished" something and then some time later think "What was I thinking? That's not even close to done!"

So nice to hear how much "big bang" is loved! I have several pieces that still need that little something extra to make them perfect.

The fabrication involved with Charged Particle has always fascinated me…can’t wait to see it with the color changing paint!

Yeah, me too!! Will start on her after the new year. The patron is still under a few feet of snow and it will be an outdoor piece so no hurry. Stay tuned....

Best advice ever! Back in art school, I struggled with this as well but then we had a deadline to meet for the semester. I would often rebirth pieces that didn't quite feel finished before and create or change them to what I felt they would need to be. As some may know we needed to create a body of work over the course of the year and this was a god sent to me at the end of the year as they all still sang the same tune. As to color, yes sometimes the surrounding greatly affect the appearance of a piece that when we create them in a studio it is hard to imagine the surroundings it will live in.

I heard once perfect is not when there is nothing left to add. But when there is nothing left to take away!

I believe it was Michelangelo who said something similar: "I just chip away what isn't part of the sculpture."

I think de Vinci is credited with saying "Art is never finished , only abandoned " .

I've been manacled to house build for approaching 5 years. My job has been to do all of the exotic doors and custom built-ins. Since l have only limited creative input, l've had to watch as the owner/builder continues to add and add and add and add ..... you get the idea. The house is beginning to look like a doll house. I suppose this would be the antithesis to what you are talking about. Basically, knowing when to stop. I just take pictures of specific elements of my work for my portfolio. As a whole the project is an embarrassment. But, it pays well. I'm such a whore.

Sad but sometimes we have to go to the low side. Everything will work out in the end. Thank you for watching and posting.

Thank you for your upbeat reply. It helps to hear that others have had to do what is necessary to keep the kids fed and the lights on. Just as an aside; l first encountered your channel when l was looking at upgrading my welder. You had done a fairly comprehensive comparison between your multiprocess inverter and your legacy Millermatic welder. It was that video that convinced me to go with a small inverter. A decision l have never regretted. Thank you so much for sharing. Cheers.
