Are Australia's hardline immigration policies working? | The Stream

It's been five years since the Australian government began refusing mainland resettlement for asylum seekers detained at offshore prison camps. Supporters of the government's hardline stance against illegal immigration say the policy has successfully deterred people smugglers and illegal boat arrivals. But human rights advocates say the government has created an inhumane system of indefinite detention for people already escaping persecution. We'll discuss conditions at Pacific Island prisons including Manus Island and Nauru and ask whether asylum seeker policies need to change.

Let’s be clear. Economic migrant does not equal refugee. Asylum seeker does not equal refugee.

It's funny how the media puts a twist on the immigration issue stating the refugees are victims . They chose to take that route and knew the risks of trying to enter a country illegally. A sovereign country has every right to protect its borders and punish illegal aliens accordingly in order to stop the influx of massive illegal immigration.

+Enoch Powell Unfortunately since Powell's time, the nuts have taken over the asylum. Now all a "refugee"? has to do is sew the lips of his children in immigration detention, and all the nuts come out in force to blame the host country, FOR THEIR BARBARIC PRACTICES. Talk about double standards. Get rid of them. Why would we change our mind and take in the sort of trash who would use his children for political gain?

As an Australian. Yes, I know this policies is harsh, but my country taking in refugees is one thing. However we do not want refugees to come here with the additional risk of coming by water given what they had to deal with in the first place. Also we don't want people in south east Asia to take financial advantage for other people suffering by offering to supply boats to come here.

In early 2011, more than 1000 asylum seekers who were already found to be refugees were stuck in Indonesia for up to a year awaiting ...since 2011 Australia has not resettled any refugees from Indonesia who arrived before July 2014
@EternallyGod

Who decided they were refugees? By the laws of the world today, you cant go across the world then ask for asylum....it has to be a neighboring country. I know reading is hard but try next time.

Why this people do not go to Indonesia , Vietnam , Egypt ,etc . There should be another countries that are likely to be opened to receive them. Why they want to go to the most developed countries if those are so crowded of immigrants . Refuge is not the same as immigrant. If you want to be an immigrant you must comply the entry requirements . It is not a duty of these countries to receive them.

O K, lets talk about the man from Afghanistan who against the advice of his extended family, took his family of eight on a boat heading for Australia , and ended up in Papua who gave them settlement, BUT he wanted to go to Australia, so he arranged with smugglers to take them, boat overturned, he was the only survivor, he was deported, went back home in a quiet village in Afghanistan among his extended family, to an empty house what was he running from? wanted to go to a RICH country
@robertcartledge826
@robertcartledge826 5 лет назад
Exactly right. While what happened to this man is very sad, it never would have happened if he hadn't tried to come here illegally, especially since he was just doing so for economic reasons, not to save his family from anything.

I’d rather Australia pick and choose asylum seekers that are in direct danger in active warzones. I don’t class Indonesia as an active warzone.
@RNA0ROGER

I think Australia should simply bite the bullet and withdraw from any law of convention regarding asylum outright. We don't share any land boarders and any trip to Australia is dangerous under the best of circumstances. We aren't the US and frankly the problems of other countries are the problems of other countries. There are some narrow cases where a person can legitimately claim asylum to Australia. But these are far too narrow and small in number frankly

Of course I get the replys I expected from the people who believe everything Murdoch and the Australian government fear mongering wants them to believe. Did you realize there are 260 million muslims living next door in Indonesia. If muslims wanted to take over Australia they could do it any time. I've had a refugee living in my house. He was a top bloke. He's an Australian citizen now. He has a good job. Probably earns more than you guys.

We Australians don't have a problem with taking in refugees, but the problem with what we do have is people taking an additional risk by coming here via barely working boats, and also people in south east Asia taking financial advantage by selling leaky boats to already suffering people.

I'm Australian. Our treatment of refugees, makes me ashamed of who we are. A statement I am ashamed of too. I never ever ever thought I would feel this way. Right now, we have a 'right wing' Trumpian style unelected guy. We have an election in May. Please, know, not every Australian advocates for this. It is a minority, almost no one I know in real life have any issue with helping refugees, and we have many examples of refugees success once here. This cannot continue. It has to change in Australia - Naurus bizarre govt is getting far too rich, as is PNG. They NEED the money.

im swedish and you'll regret wanting millions of refugees. constant harassment makes you forget why you wanted them in the first place. of course there are good ones! i've meet plenty. but most don't respect us and take everything for granted. they get free money, free healthcare, safety, free education and more. thats why i became right-leaning. leftists always say that i never meet immigrants but i see and talk to them everyday and thats why i now have these opinions.
