Thank you! I agree it should be clearer. I'm tired of wasting time clicking on and reading about packs that turn out to be unsuitable for my purpose. I'm looking for a winter pack. I want to put large, bulky gear (winter bag, jacket, etc) inside the protected main compartment. A so-called 75 Liter pack almost fooled me until I found out the main internal compartment is 42L. A 10L "front" mesh pocket, 12 liters of open side pockets, and various piddly amounts in other exterior pockets won't do it for me. Besides, 10L of gear stuffed into stretch mesh sticking out behind the body of the pack isn't the best distribution of weight. And anyway, why is the back of a pack called the front? Ever seen anyone carry it that way?

ya that gets confusing too because packs like the osprey kamber 42 have a opening panel on the side that touches your back. I think most of them that do that call it a "back panel". I mostly just want internal volume listed as a number then total with outer pockets as a total because ya its annoying to scrap through the details on each of them.

I've had all these same thoughts while researching packs! Glad somebody is out here voicing my internal opinions.

It is smaller issue, than lying about volume. So many manufacturers gives bag size, we can multiply dimensions to get volume. And often it is way less volume. And bag is not rectangular brick either.

The value of this video for beginners is thus: The numbers are deceiving. Read all the details before picking something. Test packing it before you use it, and make sure you can return it.

Nailed it. Great video. Sleeping bags and pads, same issue....

This is annoying. Most of my packs don't have many pockets. I always assumed the size had the main pack and all pockets included. Not sure how they would count the mesh exterior pocket. Good video.

the situation is 100% a mess and needs to be solved.

I agree with you!! … although no comparison between store bought brands (mainly purchased for shorter trips or by new backpackers) and cottage country ultralight packs purchased online for thru-hiking. I have the Mariposa 60 and absolutely LOVE it. I knew exactly what I was getting as I did sooo much research (and it’s only available online, no way to try it on etc.). Love your videos btw!

Cheers, that pack looks great I'd like to try it eventually. I hope pack makers can establish a new volume langage, will it happen.. maybe probably not though.

We are definitely mislead. I have 40L mind shift and Lowepro bags, or at least that’s what’s advertised the MS is a true 40L, buth the Lowepro is 30L, at most.

gets a little annoying when it doesn't add up

Payload is just as important as volume ! I`ll sacrifice a little on the empty pack weight to gain a little more on payload.

I recently went through this buying the Six Moon Designs Swift V pack. It was confusing because earlier version they called it a 40+11L I think, but new versions just called it a 50L … when the collar is 100% extended … I think 😂 I’m waiting for it to arrive so I’m excited to find out! Haha
@IdRatherBeHiking
@IdRatherBeHiking 5 месяцев назад
ya that seems like they are wanting to do away with the 40+11 roll top, usually the 50 vs 51L in this case is a matter of small medium vs medium large pack. The med/large would be 1L more. I guess you'll find out soon enough if this is infact the case or not with the 40+11 situation. I'm far too tired of digging through pack stats to see what they actually are.

I never thought about looking for the size, I just wonder if my stuff will fit in it and what I can leave behind if it doesn't lol

Just use your bathroom scale. 1L is 1Kg. Idea that you should read the description to figure out the volume is rediculus. Some years later you cant even find this product on the internet. They dont sell it anymore or they have V2 with different spec. Even worse with clothing.

I don't see any problem with it, as long as it's communicated clearly. Gossamer Gear states 36+24 on their website, as you show. and you don't really buy bags like the Mariposa in store, do you? also, I doubt that someone with zero knowledge on backpacks blindly buys an ultralight pack... those packs are very niche specialty items for gear heads like us. it also wouldn't help doing the opposite... calling the Mariposa a 36L pack is misleading as well. it packs much more than your average 36L backpack.
@IdRatherBeHiking
@IdRatherBeHiking 5 месяцев назад
For that reason it think its important to not call it a mariposa 60 or a mariposa 36 but a Mariposa 36+24 (60) or whatever format. Maybe pack makers would prefer Marisposa 36(60) with internal (total) making it smaller and allowing one to do the math on external. I know when people convert over from big brands to cottage though they get snake biten by not knowing.

Don't be stupid pouring water into your pack. Manufacturers us small plastic balls, or styrofoam balls instead of actual liquid.You fill the pack, pockets, and pouches until it's full. Then you empty it all into a pre-measured receptacle to see what the volume is.

Nah it’s not misleading. I find it pretty easy to understand. For one it’s obvious. Look at it. Does it fit your stuff?
@IdRatherBeHiking

not so obvious if you can't hold the bag in your hands
