...I love the before and after videos............I have 40 right now...and except for 6 grocery store phals.....they are all bag babies.....it is the "only" orchids available here ...Yours are doing very well....getting to that really good size....should be quite the show when they bloom....To get plants to become nice a specimen size it takes some time....but it really takes a grower thats consistent with feeding and care....yours are proof of that.......great topic and video!

Hey 👋 I also have limited space & my catleyas are getting so big so are some of the phalaenopsis ~ so I’m starting to thin out some orchids that don’t flower often . Fragrant orchids are a plus ~ love novelty phalaenopsis they are my favorites

I'm a huge fan of bag babies. They tend to be available in Lowe's several times a year. I have found most of them to be rather vigorous and easy to grow. I purchased most of the varieties I've seen and am enjoying watching them grow.

I got my first cattleyas from Lowes last year. Rhyncholaeliocattleya (RLC) Mitsuo Akatsuki (Large Pink) - Died shortly after repotting,may have had fusarium Potinara Rep Clift Tsuji 'Hawaii' (Lavender) - Started to grow a new psuedobulb and roots in the spring, but the roots never continued growing, threw this one out today. Dialaelia Village Chief Perfume WCL (White with Purple Lip) - Biofoliate in a terracotta pot, made a lot of new growths and roots this year. I have it next to a southern exposure window that is pretty much direct sunlight and the leafs have never burned.

Good luck with the cat grass! My cat refused to eat it. Fortunately, he’s now a senior cat and doesn’t bother my plants. I bought a cattleya in the bag from Lowe’s. All the roots were rotted. It never recovered. I bought a dendrobium and encyclia from Lowe’s, but I don’t remember if they were in the bag. I think I overwatered the dendrobium because it turned yellow and most of it died. The encyclia is doing well and has some new growth.

Thank you! Let's see - she's awful haha. I love her but she's so destructive that I don't think I'll ever have a cat again after her. She was a stray and I felt bad when I saw her as a kitten so that's how it went lol. As for the bag babbies - yeah! It goes either way! I feel like most of the time they are negleted at the stores but other times, they are overwatered, but it's also easy to overwater babies when we bring them home! WIth more experience it's worth trying again!

@@NicoleDeanna Awww, I hope you don't stop giving a good home to cats in the future. They are all different and there’s no guarantee ones in the future will eat your plants. Great video, thanks Nicole! I haven’t tried bag babies yet but always see them in stock at Lowe’s. It might be time 😉. Hearing you talk about giving away a pretty but non fragrant once a year bloomer hit home. I have bought some orchids over the last year that haven’t quite lived up to the promise of their pictures but it’s hard to make the decision to give them away. Your comments were just what I needed to hear ❤

It's a sign its time :) Yeah! I love my orchids but man... when you have a big one only bloom once a year AND no fragrance, it's like, come on, give me one or the other and i'll keep you haha. It's hard to give them away but the collection just keeps getting larger as they grow, so it's best to not keep the ones you don't love as much. Thanks for watching!

@@NicoleDeanna OMG you just crystallized how I have been feeling about certain orchids! I am realizing it is ok to love orchids in general but not love each one equally plus I think my preferences are changing as I get deeper into this hobby. Thanks Nicole 🩷 Yeah, once a year Phals are fine, fragrant or not, because of their gorgeous long lasting blooms but once a year cattleyas (and some won’t even manage that 🤪) may not be worth my time caring for them. My neighbor might be getting some additions to her collection.

Hi Nicole. I just checked for bag babies at our Lowe’s yesterday. Not a one. Very rarely will they have them. Too bad they are not available on Amazon. But I have to tell you what I got unexpectedly too. Two Hoya cuttings from a friend of mine this past week. I have no idea 🤷‍♀️ which ones they are. She didn’t know. I’m rooting them right now. One is variegated and the other has dark green leaves with tiny white spots. I just told you last week you never know and a few days later here I am with two cuttings 😅. I thought of you and your love for them. Thanks dear friend, wish me luck. 👏🤗💕

Hi, I live in Jersey 30 minutes away from Ny city area, I’m able to find some orchids at supermarkets around here as well as Home Depot, I also heard that I can find some in Trader’s Joe and Whole Foods supermarkets and Costco, but unfortunately some of them are not that great, their roots are not that great sometimes I buy them anyway to experiment, I use to have like 50 orchids mostly phals but for time reasons I lost almost all of them, but recently I’m trying to go back to my beloved hobby of growing orchids, of my 50 orchids collection I had, I only have 3 left yes it can be overwhelming to have so many orchids as you mentioned in one of your videos but I’m in again for the second time 🤗… I’m very fortunate to have an orchid wholesaler near me😊is called Taida orchids they have a good selection and a wide variety and strong orchids , I was there a week ago and i bought 5 orchids 3 of them are fragrant and I got Hooked I couldn’t resist to them and I’m planing to go back again for a gift and maybe buy some more for me as you said is addictive and so rewarding to have them … your orchids look beautiful thanks for sharing your tips!

I went on an adventure and bought some a few weeks back. They got a full hour soaking of tepid RO water, followed by my calcium/kelp mix for transport shock. I bought five, 3 in 4” pots and 2 smaller ones. It took a few follow up waterings, but they are all doing really well, and I am so shocked! I thought they would die because of stress and dehydration, but they were Encyclias/Cattleyas(drought tolerant) and a Brassavola. I love them! I don’t know how you manage 200+ orchids!😳😳 I am at 66 right now, last count, and waiting for one that I ordered last spring to still get here…{crickets}, and I find myself busy some days for hours.❤. No complaints, though! This is an awesome hobby. 😊🤗💯👍🪴. All your plants are beautiful! I think you should record your videos wearing a red cape with an ~S~ insignia on the back for Super orchid girl. (Ok, maybe that’s too much but I am amazed at your undertaking.) 😂❤🤣🤭. Great video, as always.

I'm so glad they are doing well. Honestly, soemtimes I don't know how I manage the collection either LOLLLL. I am also the type of person that doesn't know how to relax, so I'm always staying busy with something, but I can't handle much more. I do cut corners with watering, with having moss in the pots and just not bringing them to the sink each time, that helps a lot, but repotting season is a nightmareeeeee. Thank you for your kind words :)

Love the blooms on the yellow orchid with no fragrance! Really beautiful. I was surprised at the result of Mueller/Triumphans! Outside of the larger growth of the plant I didn't see anything but maybe petal/sepal shape from the Triumphans. Is that one fragrant? My favorite orchid in my collection is non fragrant and blooms once a year. It's so spectacular that I can forgive it for having no fragrance. ;-) I think you should keep the yellow one with no scent. It's pretty striking.

Hey Nicole. I really liked this video. I have a ton of bag babies! I probably have 30 or 40 at this point. I have a question. How long do you keep an orchid that's not blooming or doing well, before you just give up on it? I have a few that I'm not too sure about, but I have a hard time giving up the ghost. Thanks for the video!
@NicoleDeanna
@NicoleDeanna 2 месяца назад
That's really nice! You have good variety! Honestly I think I hold on to them for too long till they die lol. This other bag baby that I got rid of did nothing for over a year and it started shriveling up and when I touched it it was wiggling in the pot indicating it had dead roots and wasn't anchored to the pot. My best advice is - if you see that the orchid isn't growing and seems to be on the decline - perhaps separate it from the collection in case it's sick. Then if you don't see any change in about 2-3 months (no new growths no new roots, just declines further) I'd just throw it away. This is super conservative - but space is precious. The best thing that can be done is inspecting the first signs of decline - is the root system not liking the medium? Over or under watering ect, but sometimes we don't notice till its too late!
