I think you forgot some key features of this unit. First is their recruitment building; you will want damsels in your every army and at tier 3 building slots can be very limited. Second is their wide formation; this reduces the missile and artillery damage they actually take and helps them cover more ground. And thirdly they can get buffed quite significantly against certain factions through technologies. For example vs Chaos and Norsca they get extra +5 MA and +10 def. These are the best Bretonnian infantry by a fair margin because of their high leadership and make the infantry building chain completely redundant.
This is why I put the disclaimer at the start that I'm not well versed on the faction yet. Since I usually look at units in isolation, well... I want to do more videos about combinations, but I had quite a week last week and it's only just now back to regular stuff fully. I have a Chaos Sorcerer Lord of Nurgle (think that's right.. the lord one regardless) one with a script all done, and that enables Forsaken spam with a purpose even for Ku'gath's faction. So combinations and those big, bad anti-faction techs (which Empire gets too) are things I'll cover somewhere in time. These guys are great, and my best memories with Bretonia are with them. They may not be unbreakable, but I have seen them fight to the death on more than one occasion, and they took their fair share with them. One of my favourite units on the roster.
Great video! As I said on the foot squires, these guys, foot squires, and the frail reliquary are practically designed to be used together. The further melee attack and leadership buff makes certain that they get the most out of their frenzy, and foot squires help deal with the armored targets that the battle pilgrims cannot handle.
These are the most versatile Bretonnian infantry units. Good damage and tankiness, for low tier infantry. They will outperform all enemy chaff, they will wipe out early game anti-large units and they will serve as a very capable anvil for Foot Squires and cavalry flank/rear attacks. Their ITP, Frenzy, great MA and decent MD are simply invaluable on this extremely underwhelming infantry roster. And the fact that Grail Reliquaes boost their MA and Leadership even higher is just great. Great review.
I look forward to using them more in the future. I've used old school Flagellants back in TWW1 and was fine with those.. so a more resilient if slower version feels just fine at the heart of the foot infantry battle, at least for "most" situations.
@OffToBattle I think that Battle Pilgrims are just a better unit than Flagellants- 30 armor + 35% missile block chance + 7 Melee Defense and very comparable damage. Yes, unbreakable has its uses, but BPs are better 9 times out of 10
Peasant Bowman and their 2 same level elemental variants are both the only ranged infantry and act as a light artillery unit before Trebuchet(only artillery unit alongside with their blessed variant). They didn’t do much but they are very important units to keep this faction from early to late game.
Battle pilgrims are pretty much the best infantry you're going to get as brettonia; they're scrappy enough that they can hold the line and do some damage and while they aren't going to handle themselves against more elite infantry (IE upper tier elves, dwarves, chaos warriors ect) they don't have to since with brettonia your knights are the ones that get the job done for you. True, foot squires on paper have better stats and armor piercing, but the issue there is that they're more expensive, take longer to get out, require tier 4 (and thus a slot in a capital), they don't have shields (so missiles will mulch them) and against comparable infantry (swordmasters, hammerers, black orcs ect.) they really don't do very well. So yeah: Battle pilgrims all the way.
Just wrote a comment in the Foot Squires video, but this is the better of the two Bret elite infantry. They're better all-rounders, which I think fits, but I actually think they should hold the line better while having a secondary role of killing spearmen easier. Meanwhile, Squires should have the ability to buff knight units directly. But as they are now, I think Battle Pilgrims are fine. They're certainly just better overall than Men at Arms it seems, so I don't think you can go wrong with them should you have the money.
Ooooh, I didn't even realize that was missing! Lot was going on last week. It's settling down. I was floored during my recent failed Franz "relearn the faction" campaign that Empire Knights take 1 turn to recruit now. When did that happen... anyway, expect an Empire Knights video soon enough!

Battle Pilgrims have the dubious honor of being the only good Bretonnian infantry. Polearms and spears-with-shields fulfill their role modestly, but are still just peasants and will only ever be peasants. Battle Pilgrims actually hang and bang when it comes time to brawl, and aren't horribly overpriced and underpowered like Foot Squires.
I can see that they're good more of the time, against a broader array of competition, than other units with their own more niche places. It still speaks very well of the Battle Pilgrims themselves.
@@OffToBattle a lot of the time, people think of Bretonnia as the 'faction that solves problems with Knights', but in the early game, you're actually the faction that has to solve problems without Knights, and that's where Battle Pilgrims shine.
