Are Better Bus Stops in L.A.'s Future?

Rail projects have gotten much attention in recent years, but buses are still the backbone of L.A.'s sprawling public transportation system. But the stops where passengers wait to catch their buses can be pretty crummy, with no shade, lighting and even places to sit.. Now, L.A. is in the midst of installing what it hopes will be thousands of new and high-tech bus stops that are supposed to ease passenger discomfort.
You can read more about L.A.'s bus stop improvement program here:

You can read the bus shelter contract between the City of Los Angeles and Tranzito-Vector, the mobility and advertising joint venture here:

Great video, great topic for a video. As a bus rider in LA, I agree with Nithya, the lack of bus shelters is an outrage. I wish we'd go even further than that three seat one. Buses don't seat three people. I wish we had large, extravagant bus shelters that acted as beacons to show that this is an excellent way to get around LA.

Thanks so much for the comments. The best L.A. bus stations are the ones along the dedicated bus route in the Valley.

What you're describing exists, in part, on the two BRT lines on LA Metro, the J and G lines.

This is some great stuff! I actually didn't realise that there was a dedicated JV for advertising+better bus stops - love the interviews too. Keep it up :)

Thanks so much for the kind feedback. Yes, I didn't really know about the importance of advertising either when it comes to funding bus stops.

This video is super well done. 1:04 The problem with the comfort of waiting at a bus stop in LA, in my opinion, is that most of our streets are built like highways. So it feels like you're waiting on the side of a highway which is miserably loud and actually really dangerous. We definitely need bus shelters, and we also need to reduce the number of car lanes and shrink these streets back to human scale (while keeping bus-only lanes of course).

Thanks so much for the kind. message. Yeah, I think you're right about the relationship between the streets and bus stops, especially in the Valley and South L.A. where you have these really wide boulevards just a step away from unprotected bus stops.

@@SaulSGonzalezIt's really any commercial street in LA County, especially the ones heavily used by big trucks. It's not just an issue with bus shelters and waiting for a bus, but also simply walking on the sidewalk. Many of these streets have a 40 mph limit. Have you ever walked on an LA sidewalk, which are notoriously narrow, of one of these commercial streets? The experience can feel very precarious and dangerous when you have a vehicle zooming by at 40+ mph around 10 feet from you or even closer on streets where there is no parking. A driver distracted for a couple of seconds could easily kill a pedestrian. I would walk more if it wasn't for how fast cars drive on commercial streets. Of course, most bus stops are probably on commercial streets, too. Reducing speeds, widening sidewalks, and narrowing streets are long overdue in LA. Your video on the changes on a section of Hollywood Blvd is a good start. There are some streets like Broadway in DTLA that can be closed to vehicles like they did in Santa Monica with 3rd Street to create the Promenade.

That CEO said making bus stops multi use will actually create a need to shelter and shade bus stops. You're right Mr. CEO, people waiting in 111 degree weather with no shade is not enough of demand.

Great video Saul. Thank you! I've been a lifelong valley resident and I know the pain of waiting for a bus in the sun. I completely disagree with Gene of Tranzito/Vector. Bus shelters should first and foremost be functional providers of seating and shade. It's a wheel that does not need to be reinvented, in fear of costs exploding and rollout slowing. We don't need "gig economy" lockers and e-scooter hubs, we need shade, seating, and trip info deployed quickly and successfully.

Thanks for the comment, especially from a bus-riding Valley resident! I don't know how difficult it would be to make the leap from conventional bus stop to tech/gig economy hub. Maybe a handful of such stops on streets like Sunset or Ventura boulevards.

It's not flashy, but I feel like beefing up Bus service would pay back dividends the more you do. There's a a few bus stops extremely close to me that I could use to get almost anywhere I need to go, but the reliability and infrastructure turns me away.

I'm sure many people share your opinion. I think people who might ride, say, a light rail rail wouldn't ride the bus.

@@SaulSGonzalezYou know that’s the weird thing about LA. In other cities light rail and heavy rail are usually seen as fancier than buses. In LA however especially with the safety concerns people seem to prefer that to taking The A line (one of our light rail lines) or the B line (one of heavy rail lines)

Will these new bus shelters replace all existing ones or are they just adding more? I wait to see how these hold up over time. The more technology that is added the more maintenance will be needed.
