One of the questions talked about formality of the Strand, Park Avenue, and Fifth Avenue. You only brought up the Park, Fifth, and Strand. Is there a reason you left out the Cornwallis? How would you rate the Cornwallis on the formality range? Is it more or less formal than the fifth avenue?

Hi Kirby, Can you talk about other designers shoes in the AE price point that offer similar quality but mores ‘daring’ style? Also, shoes that are made for a larger instep as AE lasts tend to not accommodate high arches or taller insteps. Thanks.

I would like you to do then different videos, each going over typical style on level 1-10 for guys, you can start with level 5 as normal then do the moore interestin 4 and 6 untill 1 and 10. Or you can go up one level and explain what has been gained on the new level. It would be interesting to have your take on it. I think 1-5 would be to simplifyed.

Thank you for such invaluable information. As a Texas District Attorney, my wardrobe varies greatly...but it is almost always on the more formal side. Luckily, I take great pleasure in nice things and that starts with shoes. I always love hearing information on shoe care and maintenance and would love a video primarily displaying immaculately maintained dress shoes that are 10+ years old. They can be a work of art themselves...

Black shoes are a necessity but I prefer brown or number 8 oxblood the vast majority of the time. So much more depth vs black.

Very good video. Someone did a great job choosing the right music (jazz guitar) and keeping it at low volume. Also there is something truly special about light brown shoes. They up grade any casual or business casual outfit.

I have been told by my shoemaker that if you apply a navy cream polish to black shoes it makes the black colour of the shoes deepen and intensify to the eye. Is this true?

Fantastic video as always. I love different shades of brown and for some reason I have been buying tan colour. I bought one pair in particular, a pair of half-brogues on sale from Church's. I was reluctant to wear them because they look so pale, lacking soul, but I just followed your video of creating patina using Saphir Dark Brown and they look fantastic now, with personality, perfect for a navy bright suit to make a statement. One advice, it's very helpful using Mirror glass dark brown. I think this is quite new and wasn't available when you did that video, but it really makes things easier.

Alfred sargent shoes are great - honestly, i own 3 pairs ( the shoreditch longwing brogue in mahogany with the dainite rubber sole is my favourite , so versatile- great for both business and pleasure ). It's a shame they don't have more of a retail presence .

I have for a longtime polished all my black shoes with diffrent colour cream polishes. Black Chelsea get a mix of a Cognac and Saphir blue which produces a beautiful purple, Black Semi-Brogue in Oxblood, Black Cap-toe in Saphire Blue . I get so many compliments,they've started what colour are they debates. As for my original Ox-blood double Monkstraps they have had cognac,blue,brown and black are probably my favourites. It's so hard to mess up your shoes with the Saphir range,you really have to make a serious effort to get it wrong.

Hey Kirby, thank's again for a great video. But something isn't quite clear to me. How often should shoes be shined and properly treated to nourish the leather? What about shoes that aren't in weekly use?
@dougdimmadomeownerofthedim3072
I just bought 4 pairs of leather shoes. Made sure they were Goodyear welded, used top grain leather, and had stitching in the sole of the shoes. I bought a chocolate Chelsea boot, a dark brown tassle loafer, mohagony cap toe oxford, and some Brandy wingtip boots. I am just so confused as to how to take care of them. Should I buy a polish? A spray? Water repellant? Conditioner? How often? Use what with what? I dont know what to do. There is so much out there. Thanks Kirby!

350-500 (before discount) is the best value for me. I have sub 300, 500 and >800 shoes. And to be honest with you, I am not so impressed with >800 shoes, the difference would be stitching density and better finishing in which most of the people will not care after 2 wears. I would suggest not to go with sub 300 like Meermin if your budget allows, just go directly to Carmina if you prefer refined last or Alden / Crockett and Jones if you prefer more traditional last.

Kirby - I’m a sucker for brown shoes. Have a pair of 5th Ave in Coffee and Sanford’s in Walnut. Called A-E customer care this week to ask about a flaw I noticed on my Sanford’s. Proudly told them that I have the major colors of brown Saphir paste polish ( purchased from the Hgr Project, btw) and I thought that I might be able to fix the flaw, but if not could I exchange the shoes. I was shocked when the person on the line told me that A-E ONLY recommends their polish and if I elected to use Saphir products it would be at my risk. Any thoughts that you might be able to share would be greatly appreciated. Also - this is the second pair of A-E shoes I’ve purchased from the factory ( no A-E retail stores in TUL) in the past 6 months that have come with noticeable flaws. Not sure what’s going on in Port Washington.

Kirby, I am a law student who is interviewing with firms and judges at the moment. I have one suit which I had custom made. It is Navy blue. I am now looking at getting another made but I can’t decide on the appropriate color. Can you suggest anything here in the comments or through a video? I hear others say a black suit is too formal to be a first suit. But should it be a second? Third? Thanks in advance Kirby. I appreciate what you do for our community.
@bryanharris6228
@bryanharris6228 5 лет назад
Dark grey. A deeper grey like charcoal and avoid the medium to light greys for your second suit. Although it is stunning in the right environment, a light grey suit isn't as flexible as medium-dark grey. Dark grey works with blue colours, brighter red/yellow, black shoes, tan shoes and deep red/oxblood shoes. Black or pinstripe can be #3.
@jmdelira87
@jmdelira87 5 лет назад
Bryan Harris I appreciate your input. I’ve been learning far more to the charcoal color. Would a charcoal suit be appropriate in my state Supreme Court hearings? I’ve got many of those to attend.

i disagree that one should have a pair of black captoe oxfords as his first shoe. unless he is required to dress up frequently and have to attend events that require black shoes, i think a medium brown to dark brown pair (with some brogue-ing) will be much more versatile.

@EZBISME
@EZBISME 5 лет назад
I completely disagree about the black cap-toe oxford being a first shoe for everybody. This may be true for some of the more conservative sectors and areas, but in technology or modern workplaces, the black cap-toe oxford will pretty much never get any wear. I actually recommend a dark brown cap-toe oxford first. The dark brown shoe can be worn with navy or grey suits, is dark enough to be worn to every event you'll go to in the startup or technology companies, and it won't make you look too stuffy or old fashioned to fit in. The second pair of dress shoes would be a quarter or semi-brogue oxford in oxblood. This can also be work with both navy and grey suits. It's slightly less formal, but in the technology sector will still be seen as a very dressy shoe. You can wear a semi-brogue shoe with slacks or even jeans potentially. Then I would recommend next a black full-brogue/wingtip oxford. This is your black shoe. It has the black formality without being overly conservative. Remember, in the world of technology companies, conservative is a BAD thing. You can wear it with the same two grey and navy suits, too, but you can also dress it down with almost anything. For the fourth shoe, I'd recommend a full-brogue/wingtip light brown derby. This is your first daily wear shoe. You will wear this with your smart-casual outfits--jeans and a button-down shirt, which is the uniform. I'd recommend the fifth shoe be a double monk oxford in any color you want. This is also smart casual and your other daily wear shoe.
@Ikari777
@Ikari777 5 лет назад
Totally agree. Think the black shoe being recommended as first, is very poor advice 95% of the time. Most will never get any wear, as you said, or will simply be mismatched to their looks in formality/or color.
@stylishoversixty9459
@stylishoversixty9459 5 лет назад
Lot said there but I think you have painted yourself into a corner by judging your sense style or color choice of shoes based on thinking "technology or modern workplaces" indeed you are entitled to your preference when it comes to foot wear however do not limit it to a work environment black cap toe shoes is definitely not a conservative or BAD thing as you put it rather it's simply a starting point building upon a foundation and believe it or not will actually open more doors when it comes to job opportunities versus brown or oxblood colored shoes this is my thoughts on the matter agree or disagree again that is that is preference to which you are entitled.
@EZBISME
@EZBISME 5 лет назад
Sorry, I have not painted myself into any corner. I agree that it may open opportunities vs. close them to wear darker shoes to an interview--EXCEPT in technology companies, especially startups. Even wearing a suit to an interview with a tech startup in the West coast could mean rejection to the position because you, "won't fit in with the culture." That is the reality. In fact, some of the companies don't even interview you anymore without an informal interview in a public setting to see if your personality works. That means you get invited to an outing with the boss and some team members--perhaps a bar or coffee shop--just to talk shop and interests. If they don't consider you a good fit, they won't even move forward to a formal process. Suits have no place in that type of environment, and a black cap-toe oxford only signals your adherence to a culture those interviewing you consider antiquated and the antithesis of what they are hiring for!
@EZBISME
@EZBISME 5 лет назад
Frank, here is even more "establishment" evidence about modern environments and the best first shoe being a brown: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vRWngHQaYew.html

Ethan Baker Well spoken, for >90% your stuff will work out best, most places people would not exactly go bananas if you had blue suit and brown or oxblood shoes like AE. I would go with black chelsea before black oxfords. White sneakers in good leather would work to as long as there is no customer contact for most places I worked at. Then I think dressy boots are kind of a natural choice for guys that we allways feel comfty in if a bit casual.
