Are changes to Lightning Lane coming to Disneyland? | 2024-06-26

Yesterday Disney announced some pretty significant changes to the Genie+ System. Mainly, they're changing the name! OUT is Genie+, in is LIGHTNING LANE MULTI PASS (just rolls off the tongue). They will also be rolling back in some old features of the FastPass+ era. Will those changes be coming to Disneyland? Not so much.

You're exactly right. We used to go to Disneyland and stay for several days in the Grand California and purchase a multi-day park hopper pass. Ate all our meals on the property and came home with lots of merch. Last time I came for 1 day, I stayed off property at a good neighbor hotel and only bought lunch and dinner at the park. The value to fun ratio no longer justifies the expense, and they have made it too hard to book. Short-term gain for the books will produce long-term loss. Sadly, I'm in no hurry to go back.

Gosh, I wish more people were this way and would not go to Disneyland if they have an issue with it. It’s so much nicer when all the folks at the parks are having a good time and if more people made the wise choice not to force themselves to somewhere that they are disappointed with, there would be more happy people there. Thanks for being self aware and making a wise choice.

@@WindowtotheMagic Disneyland has always been predominantly a locals park with the average daily guest living within 125 miles. Due to Disney's short term thinking with trying to squeeze the last few pennies out of people they will loose the out of town guests for years to come.

David - People need to keep in mind, as mention today on WDWNT (Tom Corless), that every other themepark like Universal, SeaWorld and Legoland were charging for these skip-the-line services well before Disney. And every other international Disney park charges as well and as Tom pointed out, so will Tokyo Disney (owned by Oriental Land Co.). Some, like Disneyland Paris have the Premium pass similar to Universal that cost $100+. Personally I wish Disneyland and Disney World would just do what Universal does and offer a limited amount of unlimited front-of-line pass for $150 and be done with it. No searching on your phone for ride times,etc. You just buy the all-day unlimited pass and hope onto any ride at any time.

I'm sure I'm not the only one in this camp who refuses to buy a "magic key" or annual pass until the reservation system is gone. Obviously, many still buy it. But, when I had my pass, could go when I wanted, and there were paper fast passes, I spent SO much money in the park. I always bought a souvenir, ate at Jolly Holiday for breakfast, Plaza Inn for lunch, and Blue Bayou for dinner. Every time I went, that was my routine. Mind you, I only went once a month, because I live in Las Vegas, but I would still drop $150-$200 extra each time I went to the park. Now, I haven't been back, except for one time, since the pandemic. My annual pass payment and the $200 a month I would spend, apparently were just a drop in the bucket, that didn't mean much to Disney.
@FunAtDisney
@FunAtDisney 3 месяца назад
a single day ticket, multi-day ticket, Magic Key…. they all need reservations so what is the difference? What gets me is that the top Inspire Key at Disneyland gets blocked the two weeks around Christmas. Not WDW, so again Disneyland gets the shaft! As they do with still having the same reservation system while WDW has loosened it up a lot. Disneyland still uses the antiquated security check system while WDW for several years just has you walk through and only checks backpacks if needed. Yep, we need to be much more like WDW. But I am with you in that at the very least the top tier Magic Keys should not have to do reservations at all! I would be willing to pay more for the top pass if that were to ever happen.
@JeremyWomack
@JeremyWomack 3 месяца назад
@@FunAtDisney That's been the argument since they launched the Magic Key. One, you shouldn't have to be required to make a reservation, and two, you should be able to go any day that you wish, including the Christmas season. I understand blocking out special ticketed events.
@aiver.a

@@FunAtDisney it sucks for sure. Disneyland is definitely a magic key park and WDW is a tourist park. Makes sense they would have more ‘perks’ for annual pass holders at WDW. As opposed to Disneyland, they want to limit the magic key traffic as much as they can from the looks of it. I hate it my self. Pre pandemic was the best time to be an annual pass holder at Disneyland and all around for tourists as well. Free Fast Pass, all day entertainment, easy to navigate without constantly being glued to the phone. Enter times
@darakelian

Disneyland's reservation system IS a friction point. You are 100% correct. And it's not in place to control crowd numbers. Crowds are still huge and the park is usually overfull. I'm a local who has loved going to the park for years. They've lost the serendipity of it all. It's impossible to even think this, but they really need to put someone in charge of our park... Disneyland specifically... who understands and LOVES the park. Bring it back to it's former glory and not squeeze every last dime out of attendees.

I wish that here at Disneyland they would go back to offering MaxPass for an extra fee for Magic Key holders. We paid an extra $100 for our Annual Passes for the ability to book Fast Pass rides on our phones. I’d love to be able to do that again. As I recall we could book up to three different rides. I’d even go for it if they limited our Lightning Lane to one individual choice and one multi pass choice. That would work for us. At this point my wife and I do NOT pay for Genie+ and won’t in pay for Lightning Lane MultiPass the future. We’ve only bought Individual Lightning Lane for Radiator Springs Racers a couple of times and maybe we’ll do that again a couple of times next year. Disney would make a lot more money off of us if they offered what we had with the MaxPass extra on our passes. Yes, it would be great to go back to the totally FREE system but I seriously doubt they’d ever do that.

To me, this just seems like the progression of data collection in order to run the park. The My Pal Mickey doll had a chip that allowed it to be tracked around the park. It was one of the first ways to monitor traffic. It was then made smaller and turned into the Magic Band. Again, giving the user benefits while allowing Disney to see the flow of traffic around the Parks and adjust as needed. The three fast passes you could book ahead of time in the past allowed for crowd control and to manage expectations. If you couldn't get a pass, you knew it was going to be busy at that attraction. Disney could use the data for all sorts of reasons. Which ride is the most popular? What times of day were the most desirable? Do we need to start off the day with more cars running? The three passes got folks used to the idea. Then it went to paid. Now it's evolved to three plus paid. It's just the evolution. The three passes were a "beta test". That's just my opinion. It's neither good or bad, it's just service that helps both the user and deliverer.

100% agree about genie + making me not want to spend as much money or even GO. I have a so-cal magic key and don't want to go when it's busy. Genie + seems to have made every ride "busy" every day. I don't want to pay but I have bought genie the last two times I went because the lines were so unbearable! Parking price increase has made me decide to not go as well. Literally! My thought was "it's going to be 30 for parking and 25 for genie and $20 for a cocktail, should I really be spending that money?" Lol

Yes, LL needs some retooling. Every other park has a paid "skip the line" option, so I don't see it going away. Having some rides being a la carte only, and others only in the package is confusing. They need to pick one or the other. I would def pay $5 a la carte for HM. No way is Disney reinstalling kiosks, it sounds dumb to scan your phone on a separate tablet, if anything, they'd just turn off monetization of LL. Maxpass had more uptake because it was included on top level aps and there was the ability to add it to other APs for a flat fee. By Disney charging for LL/FP, it also gives them something they can give away, and make people feel special, maybe as a part of a hotel package, or just randomly upon entering the park, or on one's birthday...

Now when we go down there, I have buyers remorse because I feel like they’re trying to squeeze every penny out of me and I’m not getting the same Disney magic in the park anymore. if we get genie plus then we don’t buy, the kids a toy or we bring snacks into the park to offset it. Especially these days when everything in the state of California and probably the rest of the country is so ridiculously expensive. Disney is starting to give the money grab vibe that Six Flags has. . I still love Disneyland the cast members and the park are impeccable. The greedy to Six Flags but the money grab does. How bizarre is it that "Single Pass Attractions" are not called the Tier1 attractions??? But this is symptomatic of the continued marketing/positioning of these programs where the Disney team tries to obscure the basic per-cap expenditures of each guest. Like casinos using "chips" instead of actual money and airlines with their incessant upcharges, Disney wants to hide the total amount that guests are shelling out per day. The fact is that guests are paying for a Ticket Book style system. There are basically 3 tiers of attractions (and the tiers exist because of limited THRC capacity vs demand). Why not just be blatant with blatant pricing for each tier? You want to ride Tier 1 Rise/Tron/Guardians? $35 for a skip-the-line ticket. You want to ride Tier 2 BTM/MMRR/Frozen? $25 for a skip the line ticket. All the rest Tier 3? $15 I believe guests would understand the real cost of each fastpass ticket, which Disney wants to obscure. Also, and counter intuitively, I believe guests would be happier with straight up higher prices instead of unpredictable "demand pricing" nonsense.

If you want to schedule your fast pass time then you pay for a service. That would give a free option, a paid option, and there would be a reason to have a magic band.

We went to DL Paris and the 1 day park hopper ticket was about $140. The Premier Access pass was an extra $199, so $340 all in for one day two parks with one lightning lane pass for every ride that you would want to ride (all the good and best ones). With the LL feature, we only needed one day (vs two) in the park to see and do everything. Because of the high cost, the LLs were short and quick and we zipped through every ride in two parks by dinner time. I wonder if that would work at DL or would is inhibit out of town guests from visiting longer. Interesting.

I HAVE NOT NOR WILL I EVER GIVE UP AND SURRENDER ON THE RESERVATIONS SYSTEM. As a matter of fact, every opportunity I get to complain to Disney about it - I DO. I will walk away before I give in to this stupid reservation system. I REFUSE to spend thousands of dollars to go to Disneyland WHEN IT IS CONVENIENT FOR DISNEY AND NOT FOR ME!!!! UGGGGHHHH!!!!

For Disneyland: 1) Allow users to ride the rides they want to ride on MultiPass, do not restrict it to one use per attraction. If someone wants to ride Space Mountain via MultiPass 5 times, and none of the other ones, let them (assuming availability, etc.). If another family has small kids, let them go on the kid rides multiple times. --- MORE VALUE And MORE FLEXIBLE 2) Allow purchase of Multipass as a one time purchase for the year if you have Magic Key. --- LESS FRICTION 3) Remove SinglePass completely, and put those rides back in the MultiPass. If there is a new attraction and there are reasons why Multipass will not work), do what Universal does and just do not offer it in the Multipass system (like Hagrid's). In Disneyland's case, it's just Radiator Spring Racers and Rise of the Resistance. ---- MORE VALUE and LESS COMPLICATED For Disneyworld: All of the above are good too, however, since they are bringing back many of the FastPass+ perks, it may not be as critical to do ASAP.

Can we please just go back to 2019 when Disneyland was simple and easy and you didn't have to pay for everything. IMO 2021 was the BEST because there was not FAST PASS/ Lighting LANE crap. the park just moved so easy. I don't like the virtual cue either. I have just paid $200+ and now i have to have anxiety trying to get a damn VC for a damn ride that has been closed for almost a year. I love Disney but its making it very hard to justify the price especially for MK

I thought the "Genie" replaced the free fast pass and Genie+ replaced Max Pass? That's how they sold it. DAS us essentially the old Max Pass technology. MP was popular because it was a much better value. I'd rather ride Space Mountain 3x instead of Matterhorn and/or Autopia. Genie+ is not a great product. Perhaps make it $10/day and Max Pass $30. That would appease a lot of the people who used to be approved for DAS. Just my 2 cents

My beloved Disneyland is becoming a bit much now. I am paying 1,700 a year for Inspire and don't feel like I get a value. Why can't they copy SFMM? My Diamond Elite comes with 2 skip lines every visit, and I get a bonus skip the line. Plus, a bunch of other stuff!!!

Great breakdown of Genie+/Lightning Lane/Fast Pass. We are a once a year guest but we will either choose to do Genie+ or do one individual Lightning Lane, not both. Typically we go for the Genie+ at DL and then buy a RSR LL at DCA. I would probably end up spending more if they were a la carte but cheaper. It's like micro transactions in video games, $5 doesn't seem like much extra.

So, in the new LL multi pass system, we can book LLs in advance. Does this mean that all LLs will be sold out by the time you arrive at the park? So in the new system, if you buy LL multi pass, you will basically get 3 LLs and that’s it? How was it back in the Fastpass+ days, when you could book 30/60 days in advance? Were there any remaining fastpasses on the day of your visit? I’m trying to figure out if the new system will be worse if you want to do more than 3 LLs a day. Any help with this would be very much appreciated! (We’re going to WDW on July 25th, one day after launch, and we don’t know what to expect)

I think there are 2 ways to fix this problem. 1. They make fastpass expensive to the point where only a handful of people are willing to pay it. Like universal 's system. 2. They do packages. $5 for 1 pass, $15 for 3, $20 for 5, $30 for 8. Offer incentives to spend more money, people love a deal.😅

They should drop the price at DL. Considering the amount of pass holders and locals - we aren’t gonna pay $30 for a fastpass when we can just come back next week instead. But something like $10-15? I’d consider it, especially during the summer when it’s hot and busy.

Yep, tier the rides. Free LL (FastPass) for half a dozen or so rides like Small World, Haunted Mansion, Big Thunder, Jungle Cruise., Buzz, Star Tours. Paid MaxPass (FastPass Plus) for all rides including the lower tier rides and rides like Space, Millenium Falcon, Mickey and Minnie’s, Pirates etc. Keep paid LL (and just call it LL) for Rise and Radiator Springs. I’ve seen something like this in the Australian theme parks although on a smaller scale. Guests who use the app for their tickets get 1 free fast lane per visit and can opt into the paid fast lane if they choose. But they just call everything fast lane, no need to change the name based on if there’s a cost or not.

I rmbr reserving FP early at WDW back in 2018 so I'm glad to hear it's coming back! ETA: I love & appreciate your honesty regarding Disney's business mindset, strategies, and decisions. So many Disney lovers act like they love everything Disney does but we all know not everything they do is a good choice, especially lately. I agree with what you said that Genie+ has a bad connotation.. I still hate that I have to pay for what was once free (I did appreciate MaxPass bcuz technically I still had a free option). It was one of the things I raved about Disneyland because it was free and fair.. not like other parks that made you pay extra. And I also think you're correct in that it does deter me even more from buying their overpriced merchandise as well as decrease the amount of times I frequent Disneyland in a year.. and I used to be an AP holder too. I want to go back to loving Disney like I used to.. here's to hoping they bring some of that back! 🙏🤞

I like that they’re bringing back the scheduling feature back to WDW. It could encourage more people to buy it. The limit of three and two tiers could be a set back, but I think people will value the ability to plan. I disagree Disneyland shouldn’t offer scheduling specific times. For example, if your general strategy is to go clockwise from Jungle Cruise/Indy, you don’t want to be offered a 10am return time to Space Mountain. You want to ride Space in the evening. Call me an “old fashioned” Millennial, but as someone who doesn’t want to be on my phone all day at the park (isn’t Disney supposed to be a ‘escape’ from the real world), the ability to plan specific times would enable people to use their phones less.

I have a hard time believing that it’s Genie plus keeping “people away”. I think it’s the fact you $170 a ticket buy Genie plus but then also have to buy LL for Rise, Cars etc. for $26 . You pay the money but the reservation system causes it to be stressful. Price of hotels are extremely high with little perks. The value for the experience isn’t there. Make an Express pass with high price point like Universal and do away with reservation times

The new naming will most assuredly be more confusing for guests (especially new ones). I'm glad the service will stay the same without major changes at Disneyland, however. Also "Multi Pass" totally made me think of Fifth Element as well. 🤣

Hi there - thanks for the breakdown. I went to Disneyland two weeks ago, and we did use the Genie+ system. Because our trip was only one day, I did want to ride as much as I could, especially those rides that I never went on before. As a family, we went on practically every ride that was open. I would guess that was made up of around 60% Genie+ lightning lane, 35% standard queue, and two rides as single rider. The Disney app was an excellent resource, especially the interactive map, which was critical for finding the best way to get from one land to another. Being able to see current standby times, which ended up being startlingly accurate, was great. The ride reservation system was, however, stressful. Constantly checking my phone to see if something changed, reacting quickly to rides re-opening after an outage, was exhausting.

I loved fast pass, and I still miss it today. When we booked our anniversary trip, seven years ago, we booked it through AAA, which meant we got free fast pass. Because of that sayings we bought before in the park which meant they made more money. Now that I have to pay for Genie plus, or whatever it’s called today,I am buying less in the park now

Lol I'm thinking they strategically called it multi pass because there is a good connotation associated with lelu and they know how popular fifth element is because the saw us all watching it on hulu😂 it's a short term win untill everyone realizes it's the same lol I dooooo want a $5-$10 dollar per ride situation!! I've thought that for a while, I'd pay that Matterhorn guy $10 and tell no one😂😂😂😂 I think they would make more money that way but what do I know ...🤷🏻‍♀️

Disney should charge $100 or $200 for Genie+, and limit it to 1,000 a day. If only 1,000 guests have it, standby is unaffected, and those who really want it will still buy it.

And don’t forget the fast pass system you could ride the same ride multiple times per day, but not sequentially. They did kick us off Haunted Mansion for trying to do it twice in a row even though we had the fast pass for it they said no you have to come back after we’ve ridden something else basically. Plus plus whatever does not give you that option. You can ride that ride and move onto the next. So they really water down this whole system. Bob Iger is a worse ScroogeScrooge than Ebeneezer Scrooge.

We went to DL in CA last week and Paris last summer. Much prefer DL Paris system where you buy the service and are allowed to ride each of the LL rides one time at your leisure without having to make reservations for any particular return time. Took out so much of the stress and hassle of visiting DL and felt like we benefitted from the service we paid for without LL selling out early and without everyone having to enter the park early just to start making the reservations (teens liked closing down the park, and hated waking up early, which really cut into the value of Genie Plus in DL if you don’t arrive until afternoon).

And yeah, I drive four hours to go and we’ve kept our annual pass for decades, but I’m still discusted with Bob Iger. How long does he think price gouging everyone at the parks is going to keep Disney brand of float. Universal is looking better and better

I think, if they do indeed (and most likely will) continue to monetize fastpass/lightning, they should combine the a la carte option and the current system. You can choose to buy the lightning lanes individually for $5-ish a ride, or you can pay the $25 for an "all you can eat" sort of option. I feel it would be a compromise that can satisfy a larger amount of guests.

I’m from out of state so paying $30 isn’t a big deal for me. Or they could change everything to standby and every lightning lane attraction would have 30-40% shorter wait

The other thing, Bob Eiger forgets is it Walt Disney wanted a family Park. And a “South Park put a girl in it maker gay that’s the whole problem I have gay friends, but I think even they are getting tired of this force fed garbage. The movies aren’t making any money for that reason Disney+ no one’s watching that I pay for it and I don’t even watch it, but I bought it a year at a time. I have an inspire key, but I hate what Eiger is doing. he’s using the parks as the only way to flow because they are the only moneymaker in the whole Disney brand The more you throw DEI everything the more you toss out the average American family with kids that’s why moms are homeschool and their kids. They don’t want to be forced sped garbage that are not their values so why would they pay money to see movies that are otherwise they don’t run Hollywood or Disney they just don’t get it it’s a shame because I’m one of 10 kids and my parents had an annual pass and a lot of my siblings had an annual pass and a lot of their kids had an annual pass and I have a kids and a lot of them had an annual Passs. But when you throw with the families too town to the 20 centers that make up the alphabet soup well we’re gonna go to Dollywood And universal

The thing I liked about MaxPass vs Genie+ is that it wasn’t limited to one per ride per day. I used to easily be able to do my favorite attractions multiple times per visit, and if I wanted to ride a slightly less popular one like AstroBlasters all afternoon I could get like five fastpasses in a row. But I’m usually willing to wait in standby for my favorite attractions at least once, and if I can only get one lightning lane for each anyway, that’s not worth the $30 to me
@MicheleHemphill-tv2nf

I know this is going to be popular, but I don’t have a problem with lightning lanes. I come once a year, not multiple days a year, it works great for us. If I was a key holder and went several times a year ( used to be until I moved too far away) I wouldn’t buy it. But, now with our limited time in the park it gives us an edge on the crowd.
