I appreciate that you made the comment about the people who insist that you have to spend $X amount of loot or you immediately get trash. Those people really ought not to be listened to. Same story on coming up in the pre internet years with crap instruments at that price point. Manufacturers have come a long way, and it's really cool to see affordable instruments that are decent on their own, but with a little help from a smart owner can be turned into something really cool. I have a soft spot for lower end guitars made awesome. One of my favorites of my own is a Trash-caster. It is entirely built from leftover parts from upgrades, etc. The possibilities are endless, but it's you guys who are kind enough to share the knowledge that make it possible for the rest of us to get in there and really make those instruments what we want them to be as players. Thanks again!

Simon Templar good comments. I started on a $99 Japanese guitar in 1965, with a $49 transistor amp that had an 8" speaker. I've had lots of expensive and lots of cheap guitars. I really think these inexpensive Ibanez guitars are great for learning. All that normally needs to be done is a little fret end filing and new strings, as the pickups are okay.

Back when I worked in a small independent music store years ago I used to sell guitars like that with the intent for modifications. Younger or beginning players would come in and I would offer the upgrades on site. I got pretty good at coil splitting the original cheap pick ups. I also would order better pick ups when they would outgrow the original. I would do all of the wiring mods as well. We would also do set ups on the guitars quite often before we put them on the wall. Cheap guitars are something you can grow with as you progress and mould into something that can be a fantastic instrument.

I would love to see the frets getting fixed. That's one of the biggest improvements to a guitar to make it feel much more finished and "expensive." If you're going to replace nearly everything on it anyway, why not install a new nut as well? There's nothing to lose really if everything is going to get pulled from it. It's going to be fun watching this progress.

The problem is that more experienced players, some of whom are snobs, are the ones judging a beginner guitar. If you had a real beginner sitting there with you and you didn't say a word about any of the issues with that guitar, I bet they would love it and tell you it's perfect! BEGINNERS don't know all that fancy stuff like Intonation and fret sprout or even action height. They just know they have a guitar in their hand and they want to play it! As time goes on and they get more experienced they will begin to notice these things, perhaps even dive into fixing the issues and then you have not helped a beginner learn how to play a guitar but also how to know what's bad and what's good and maybe even how to fix a guitar up, where can you go wrong? To those who say that a cheap guitar can drive a beginner away from learning how to play, oh BS!! 9 out of 10 guitarists started out on a cheap guitar and it made them want to get better and buy a better guitar and we all know it!! Go back to the greats in guitar and hear the story of their very first guitar, how many of them were given a Les Paul Custom for xmas when they didn't even know how to play? In today's world younger beginners are watching these videos of these guys with these fancy guitars so yeah their taste in their first guitar might be a bit jaded, but if you gave one of them a cheap Jem version or a LP or Strat knock off, they would be delighted!!
@scottywhittaker287
@scottywhittaker287 4 года назад
Agreed. I have played les paul standards at guitar center that needed a full setup that were priced over $2000. With just a setup and putting better tuners that $200 guitar will play great and sound great, as long as it's going through a decent sounding amp.
@TheLeadG

Ron Just Ron Here is the deal with that. Many company’s, agile, and Harley Benton. Make great playing fantastic guitars for super super cheap. Money isn’t always the gauge for a good guitar. But I played on a cheap classical was it playable? Absolutely. Did it sound alright? Yeah. But 9 years later even looking back, sure it was a cheap guitar but it wasn’t bad. Don’t believe people who think that someone fighting there guitar is more likely to play guitar than someone who isn’t. Whenever I have a friend who wants to play guitar, I’ll take there guitar, do a free setup, fret dressing, put good strings on it, and clean it for them. Or if they had trouble finding one I’d help them find the best for the money. THAT is how you foster the best experience for a beginner. Don’t just let them play on trashy guitars help them. Be a good human.
@BSIII
@BSIII 4 года назад
I dont completely disagree with you, but cheaper guitars, or any guitar that isnt setup can be deterring to a beginner player. When i first tried guitar at 15 years old, it was ridiculously hard to play. If a beginner doesn't know any better, the string height and other factors can make them feel like it's impossible to learn.
@alabamahebrew
@alabamahebrew 4 года назад
@@BSIII Oh yes I agree, if a guitar is really really bad then sure a beginner might walk away. I am more talking about most modern day "cheap" guitars, like a $80 Glarry or even a $90 Squire. While they are cheap they usually are pretty close on the things like the string height. I think the most dangerous of all cheap guitars to get for a beginner is an acoustic, those cheap ones are usually pretty bad lol.
@alabamahebrew
@alabamahebrew 4 года назад
@@TheLeadG Of course if you can steer them towards a good cheap guitar by all means one should do so!! In fact my sister was asking me before Christmas on some advice on a guitar for her grandson who has never played. She was showing me a few cheap ones she found online and lol even in the photos you could see they were going to be horrible!! I showed her a few other guitars, some a little more expensive and some even cheaper, that I felt would make a better first guitar for him, lol turns out she she just bought him clothes lolol. I have a Fender Starcaster that I bought used for $100, brand new they were like $200 I guess. I bought it to help a local guy out. I tell ya what, I liked it so much better than my brand new Fender Strat that I sold the new one and still have that cheap Starcaster lol. Acoustics are the main cheap guitars I tell people to avoid, some of those are just horrible and will more than likely turn a new player away.

I ended up replacing the bridge and stoptail with a roller and TP-6 adjustable, Bournes 500k pots & 50's wiring, and a set of cheap Fleor alnico 5 humbuckers, locking tuners, bone nut. I ´ve done that. Buy a cheap but well made guitar, took it to a professional luthier, change tuners, or whatever he told me to change and then have a very nice guitar for a fraction of the price. Indeed, there was a company named Acme Guitars (I think) that used to do that thing with MIM Fenders, then they used to sell them with a profit and give their customers a very good guitar for live and/or studio stuff . With all you're doing to the guitar Dylan, it's going to feel and sound better than most brand new guitars, period. One suggestion - haven't scrolled through the comments so this may well have been suggested - a better bridge would be, IMO, the final part upgrade that makes that $200 Ibanez better than most brand new $1500 guitars... and that's if you're lucky enough to deal with a company that is willing to ensure the guitar will arrive with a proper intonation job and real attention paid to sharp fret ends to go with good parts and good wiring. Can't wait to see and hear the finished product! I found your channel fairly recently and enjoy your straight talk about everything from repair "how to" to upgrades to part comparisons. I’m nearly 60 years old, started playing in 5th grade. High school bands, bar bands for many years. I have never paid more than $800 for a guitar. The ONLY new one I bought was an Ibanez Roadstar II in about 1983, never bonded with it. Every other one came from a pawn shop. When it’s time for a new axe, I’d figure out what I could spend and start the auditions, playing whatever looked like a possibility and within my price range, going from one pawn shop to the next, sometimes taking a week or two to find the “right one”, sometimes it would be in the first place I stopped in. The instrument can give you certain inspiration and really affect how you play. If you’re really paying attention, you’ll know when it just clicks in a way you want to go with your playing. I was never concerned about how it looked, you may be different and if that matters to ya that’s cool, especially if you’re playing out in public I get it but anything was a possibility for me, it was always the feel and tone I was shopping for.

I just got a Harley Benton SC kit guitar so I can gain some practice working through the issues and learn some new things. It does have some problems, mostly needing better parts. The neck and frets are not one of them! The neck sanding, fingerboard, binding and fret work is absolutely beautiful. The nut took me 5 min to work out. The double action truss rod is greased lightning. The wood of the body looks great, but the pre drilled holes leave some to be desired. I was hoping to need some fret work and have the body right. What I got was perfect frets and a body that needs reworked? I guess the universe decided the direction I need to go!

So i think it is worth if you do not know how much time you are going to invert practicing.

The thing that I think that should be done is to ask what gauge strings that people prefer and set it up that way.Not everybody likes 10's or 9's.Thank you.

I agree. If you do set it up for 10s, at least provide the original nut when its given away so it can be reversed if wanted.

Hey.Thanks for your reply.I know that in the world of guitar players with huge hands that they prefer heavy duty strings.I'm a player that joined the ranks of guitarists such as Billy Gibbons and the likes,the lighter the strings, the better I like them.

Wow, that was the one I voted for, too. Really not a bad looking guitar for the money. But a fret dress, set up and upgrade to Bourns will make a big difference.

can find good specimens if you search long enough or pay for a set up. I paid extra for sweetwater to do a set up on a new squier P bass this year. Came retaped and double boxed two days later and was still in tune so they obviously inspected it. Plays great too with no buzzing or fret wire issues.

I agree with Dagwood Dogwood. with a good setup, the Ibanez could be a fun player to continue to learn on, and experiment with. There is something to be gained by using an inexpensive guitar to learn how to fret level and other upgrades yourself without worrying about destroying an expensive guitar. Plus practicing scales and other drills are best on a beater since re-fretting a high end guitar is cost prohibitive. Looks like a good Fishman Fluence project to me. Excellent choice Dylan, though in the spirit of buying an inexpensive guitar with the intent to upgrade, a Chapman ML Standard series is also an excellent choice. little more in cost, but setup out of the box is excellent.

That would great to ring in the new year. Especially since it's my birthday on the first of the year. I can do the set up myself and I've got the tools to clean up the fret ends.

I've got a cheap Rondomusic guitar that I've had for years, and I love it. It cost me about $300 +/-. Sounds better now with the pickups I installed and doing a proper setup. I wouldn't trade it now for ALMOST anything.

A vid about setting up a guitar, regardless of price, would be awesome. I understand that "cheaper/beginner" guitars will need more work, but the more you know the better.

I don't know if you remember our talk but this is kinda like we were talking about (content I thought would be really cool to see). My guitars are $400 give or take and I upgrade everything besides the wood lol, fret level, set up, tuners, pups, bridge, electronics, new wiring with extra dpdt switches often lol, it's almost as fun as actually playing it to mod it lol. They all are recording quality guitars now.

I’m an Ibanez fanboy tbh, but I can definitely say that, in most cases any guitar can be fixed if you have the few tools required, sharp fret ends, high action, fret leveling. Many things just take a couple tools and a file. 30,000 subscriber contest.

Eager to see the process of upgrading the guitar! I never really think about Ibanez when it comes to an LP or SG style, but it looks like a great platform for an upgrade.

Aside from the nit pick stuff these guitars are built really well. Perfect for a student. As they grow the guitar can grow teaching the user not only how to play but maintain and upgrade. All valuable skills.

I always love upgrading less expensive guitars. I have a 100 squire that feels and plays amazing. I did a couple of updates now it's a awesome guitar. But I need to learn about frets. That would be cool to see a fret working tutorial

For a $200 guitar, it sounds really good. I have several guitars and basses I use for work as a church musician that are valued at $1000 up to $4000, but the one bass I use the most is a $300 Squier 5 string jazz that is professionally set-up and all original. It sounds great.

My son picked out a Jem Jr. for his Christmas present. As a lifelong Ibanez player, I was overjoyed. As a responsible parent, I had mixed feelings about a first guitar being something with an inexpensive floyd rose style trem. If he proves himself to be serious about playing and he actually continues to love the Jem, then I know what must happen next. I will have to save up to buy him a proper Japanese made Jem at some point in the future.

I agree that you don’t have to spend a large amount of money to get a great feeling guitar. I’ve owned some guitars that were custom shops and I can honestly tell you that my guitars that I spent less than $500 can either go toe to toe with the big boys or even completely blow them over. Love and care of the instrument will ultimately be the determining factor for the feel and playability of the guitar in my opinion

I love getting cheap and used guitars to set up and then mod. I also like to build partscasters starting with an unfinished body. If I had the tools, I'd try to build a guitar from scratch, but that'll never happen. I'm still having fun. I'd love to see what you do with this Ibanez.

I've fixed up several low end guitars and it is a great experience if you have never done it before. They did sound much better for a not too much money. You just have to watch the economics of it. Putting $200-$300 of parts into a $200 guitar still gives you a guitar that is worth about $200 if you sell it. Save the original parts so you can put them back in if you want to sell it. I think buying a used but better guitar and fixing it up is a better way to go. You can get a used Mexican Strat (or similar other brands) for about $300 which is a better starting point for an upgrade guitar. I 100% agree with you on setting any guitar up properly. I do believe that every guitar player should learn how to setup a guitar on their own. It's not very difficult and is a great way to learn about guitars. Plus you can save a lot of money over the years.

Great video man. Perfect giveaway for the end of the year. I too believe that a cheap guitar can be turned into a great guitar with some tlc. Having set up both expensive and relatively cheap guitars I must say that I find greater joy setting up the cheap guitar because I know that this will dramatically change the way the "cheap" guitar feels. Then change the electronics, the tuners and the nut and voilà a 200 dollar guitar + 200 dollars in parts and a lot of love and the guitar is playing like a 1000 dollar guitar. Can't wait for the next part of the series. Keep up the good work!
