I am so glad I did my research before buying a four knife set for $267 USD. My brother is really into cooking and he only has some cheap cooking knives, so for Christmas I wanted to buy him a really nice set. I went onto their website and something really bothered me with how they have 25k reviews and they have 5 stars. Nobody has 5 stars and perfect reviews. There is *always* going to be somebody who loves to complain for whatever reason, but I couldn't find a single negative review and that off alarm bells for me. Thank you so much for honestly reviewing this company and for giving the suggestion of Victorinox, I will definitely look into their sets!

Good that your bs detector went off. If you want to give him a nice set or chef knife, stick to the established brands. Like zwilling for example. The have been in business for almost 300 years for a reason. But there is other great brands too. Chef or restaurant supply stores are usually a good place to start looking.

Imagine how I felt when my K Sabatier showed up looking roughly the same, maybe not quite that bad but nothing I'd ever seen before, and with gaps between the scales and the carbon-steel tang for a delicious amuse-bouche to go with it. I worked to straighten it-the bend was down deep toward the heel-and it's more or less back in shape and I filled the gaps but jeeze, if you're sending me a damn project knife it would be nice to warn a guy.

Buy Chinese knives where Chinese people buy Chinese knives. I went to a Chinese butcher store 20+ years ago in Montréal Canada I bought a 9 in butcher knife and and large cleaver with a honing Steel. This is the only butcherknife I have ever owned in these years and it's the only one I use daily. You can hardly tell the difference between the original Edge close to the handle and the rest of the blade it's almost the exact same original grind. It's still very sharp, only honed for 20 years, still sharp. Full tang, solid brass handle inlaid with solid steel.

@@crucifieddemon7136 one little word of advice. If you buy something that says made in China in English that's the junk stuff they sell for us if it says made in China written in Chinese that's the high quality stuff. The brand I keep seeing advertised is "Kamikoto", they are totally obsessed (in a marketing sense) with Japan, bragging about Japanese steel and basically mentioning it as often as possible, they're Japanese owned and based etc - when I did some digging, they are actually *made* in China of 420J2, at 53 HRC +/-2. A possibly 51HRC, 420J2 santoku from them costs almost $150 USD. Absolutely terrible.

jesus christ sometimes when i forge a knife it's not pefectly straight down to the tenth of millimeter, like if you're looking for it, you will see the irregularities, but in the hand and while cutting it's imperceptible (you can only give so much for a certain price when you hand forge and make all your blade from basic scrap materials and ingots). BUT THAT IS OUTRAGEOUS. Why would anyone sell a knife this badly warped ? Depending on the temper you can actually straighten it with a hammer and a makeshift anvil, but still... why... who said it was okay...

This video is the stuff of someone trying to get attention by trashing products. Kind of like a movie critic that you ignore and see the movie anyway. I own 4 of these knives. None came with the supposed defects he shows (the blade didn't look bent when he unwrapped it). All my blades came razor sharp, straight and after use remain sharp. They are made out of high carbon steel, will rust if you don't oil them after washing. They become stained from veg juices. They need (veg) oil for protection. High carbon steel makes excellent knives that are hard and maintain an edge. It's a shame that some people would pass up on these great knives because of this hack. This review probably won't make it to comments.

If nothing else, they’ve done one thing amazingly well. They provided a job for a washed up Zangief (from the Street Fighter franchise). He’s in their RU-vid commercials, and they are hilarious when they aren’t trying to be. When he looks at the camera and says “God I love her!” referring to his wife. There has never been a less convincing declaration of love in history 😂. I feel like it needs a paraphrase in printed text below that says “I plan on murdering her in cold blood!” It’s campy in the most entertaining way. Then, their other adds are full of double entendres that are so on the nose that they are genuinely funny. They’re ironically funny, because you can tell what they were going for when they missed. Don’t know anything about the knives.

A ton of information perhaps presented in too little time. I do woodcarving so sort of anal about sharpening and steels . First of all carbon steel will rust. Claimed that it sharpens better than stainless steel I think that depends on which stainless steel it is. For commercial use you can no longer use high carbon non stainless steel Knife shape. Using a cleaver in food prep is sort of oriental style. I use a chief knife. The sharpening angle is important. Everything is a compromise a narrow angle will be sharper but is more likely to crumble or even break in hard use. A broad knife such as the cleaver will allow food to stick to it. I have a draw full of quality knives but I use 3 of them. Poor quality knives, we all have some, are good for weeding in the garden.

Coolina is one of several companies who do the same thing, work with a factory who stamps out knives with anyone's logo who pays the fee. I actually bought a knockoff of a knockoff, the stamp was from a company called Pole.Craft, who are themselves this kind of company too, only the knives I bought were Coolina-style kitchen knives, not the kind PC usually releases. They were, when I bought them, 30 bucks a piece USD, and they came with leather sheaths. I was amazed that they were actually straight, the sheaths are heavy and seem to be well made. I bought them imagining them as project knives to work on, but the fit and and finish was good out of the box. I got them out of the box and forced a patina, honed up the edges and put them to work. So far, so good, for being off brand knockoffs, they cut remarkably well, they hold a pretty reasonable edge, the only real issue is, they're thick and heavy, so they will split veggies depending on how you're cutting. But I was very happy once I took them to my stones and put a real edge on them, found out the hard way they were extremely sharp. Aside from a couple small personal accidents, they really chewed up a new cutting board I bought about the same time. I just think it's weird that a knockoff of a knockoff ended up being of better quality than the knockoff.

If you can sharpen, you can take almost any knife of even decent steel and not-insanely-thick blade stock and make it work. I have an old carbon steel "Ecko Forge" knife I got off a supermarket rack hangar decades ago that still works well. When I was a kid I would sharpen it on a coffee mug. Cooked a lot of good meals with it over the years. As long as that potential is there, you're in good shape.

Like most knives advertised on social media, chump knives.

I don’t know why I even watch these. I have no need for any kitchen knives. Cutco knives all day long. I guess I like to see them get torn down.

Chinese cleavers are actually not intended to be hard use kitchen tools. They are the chinese equivalent of the chef's knife, and are often referred to as "vegetable cleavers". So, this knife having a thin edge is not necessarily a knock against it unless it was specifically advertised as a meat cleaver.

It's a real shame that this is the only comment I found where someone actually pointed out that this type of knife is a "vegetable cleaver".
