Heads up, Moscow mule lovers: That copper mug could be poisoning you
The Moscow mule - that Instagram-ready cocktail that has surged in popularity in recent years - has only a few ingredients: vodka, ginger beer, lime and ice. But perhaps the most crucial component of the drink is the copper mug in which it’s almost always served, beverage aficionados say.
Now, public health officials are warning that those mugs could be poisoning you.
An advisory bulletin from Iowa’s Alcoholic Beverages Division notes that, in keeping with Food and Drug Administration guidelines, copper should not come into contact with acidic foods with a pH below 6. That includes vinegar, fruit juice, wine and, yes, a traditional Moscow mule, whose pH is “well below 6.0.” the bulletin says.
ADVERTISING
“When copper and copper alloy surfaces contact acidic foods, copper may be leached into the food,” the division notes.
Symptoms of copper poisoning include abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting and jaundice, according to the National Institutes of Health. “Sudden (acute) copper poisoning is rare,” NIH says. “However, serious health problems from long-term exposure to copper can occur. Severe poisoning can cause liver failure and death.”
Most chefs and food scientists already know not to use copper (or copper-plated) pots and pans for acidic recipes like tomato sauce, not only for health reasons but for the ways in which “reactive” cookware can alter the flavor of a recipe. Food editor Emma Christensen broke down the differences between reactive and nonreactive cookware in a good primer for TheKitchn.com here:
Ceramics and stainless steel are considered nonreactive. While these don’t conduct heat very well and tend to have “hot spots,” they won’t interfere with the chemical structure of the food in such a way that changes the look or edibility of our food. … Aluminum, copper, iron, and steel (not “stainless”) are all reactive. They conduct heat very efficiently, and therefore, do a great job of cooking our food evenly. However, these metals are reactive with acidic and alkaline foods. If you’re cooking with ingredients like tomatoes or lemon juice, your food can take on a metallic flavor, especially if the cooking time is very long. Light colored foods, like eggs, can develop gray streaks.
The same reactions occur when copper surfaces come in contact with acidic drinks. The instinct to separate copper from acidic drinks may not be as apparent simply because copper cups haven’t been commonly used as a beverage vessel. Until now.
“The recent popularity of Moscow Mules, an alcoholic cocktail typically served in a copper mug, has led to inquiries regarding the safe use of copper mugs and this beverage,” the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division wrote. “This means that copper mugs that have a copper interior may not be used with this beverage.”
Some may protest: How else is one supposed to drink a Moscow mule? From a glass? Expedition Money LLC

The water I drank from my copper bottle caused a slow poisoning. I'm not a shill, I'm just telling you what happened to me. I started feeling sleepier and sleepier, and weaker and weaker. My balance was off as I walked. I got a dry thirsty taste in my mouth after drinking a lot of the water. My thinking became foggy and I had a hard time remembering words. I'm not drinking water from my copper bottle any more. If it helps you, more power to you, just beware, it's not as beneficial as they say. I'll use it for a flower pot. I do like the looks of it.

How Much Copper Do You Need? Copper intake requirements vary with age. Babies and young children need less of this vital nutrient than adults. The recommended intake from the U.S. National Institutes of Health is listed in micrograms (mcg): Infants aged 0 to 12 months need 200 mcg per day Children aged 1 to 3 years need 340 mcg per day Children aged 4 to 8 need 440 mcg per day Children aged 9 to 13 need 700 mcg per day Teenagers aged 14 to 19 need 890 mcg per day Adults over the age of 19 need 900 mcg per day

You get more copper in your body by food and specially vegetables than by drinking daily 10 Moscow Mules, copper is a natural element but it's put in fertilizer and pests sprays, this all comes thru the roots in plants and animals. Most good bakery's and top restaurants use copper utensils because the heat spreads better overall. And the egg white for instance for Macaroon's is whipped the best in copper pots, same as making toffee that's also done in a copper pot for the heat spread.

He is right. I only use the copper mule for water. Higher Acidic products caused the metals to leach out the mug just like stomach acid breaks down nutrients or leach nutrients from food in stomach. It’s basic science. Also, if I leave simple water in mug, more copper is released because water is sometimes ph 6.5. I also do not drank anything out of aluminum cans because that is the most dangerous metal for consciousness and brain health.

Scott Mannear Scott, don't get too excited about this- guaranteed in a year or so, it will come out that there is no real danger, one gets more metal from injesting vegetables, blah blah blah. I've seen it happen too many times in my lifetime.
@rhettoracle9679
@rhettoracle9679 7 лет назад
mrfuriouser Having suffered for six months from copper poisoning, almost losing sight in one eye, and potentially facing years of liver treatment, my perspective is probably different. For most people, occasional exposure to toxins might be a risk they choose. Regular exposure might require information. Your body, your choice, but at least it's now an informed choice instead of ignorance.
@mooneyes2k478
@mooneyes2k478 7 лет назад
Yeah, well, that "informed choice" you gave him has another name. It's called "scare mongering". Learn basic chemistry before you talk about things you don't know about. To explain it to those with a lack of knowledge in basic chemistry, human physiology, and LD50: Copper is used, and needed, by the human body. Normal human methabolic processes require copper. BUT, the human body can't synthesize(make) copper out of other things. Thus copper must be added, through diet and, potentially, supplements. This means that, as with all other substances, copper in and of itself is not toxic, and less so than many substances. It's a question of dosage. How MUCH copper is too much. This is known as LD50, or "Lethal Dosage for 50% of the population". If you reach this, chances are, you're in a bad way. Keep also in mind that the human body is really good at dealing with overly large amounts of stuff it actually needs, and can clean and get rid of toxins. The LD50 for copper for a person that isn't excessively sensitive is approximately 30mg/kg/d. That means that a person would need to ingest 30 thousands of a gram, per kilo of bodyweight, per day, over a stretch of time. Now, an average human male from a 1st-world country(as 3rd-world countries are unlikely to be drinking moscow mules) weighs about 100 kilos(that's about 220lbs for the metrically challenged among you). There are, of course, those that weigh less, but also those that weigh more. So, we're talking 3000 milligrams(30x100) on average. Of course, 1 milligram is onw thousandth of a gram, so that makes it 3 full grams. Per day. Every day. For an extended stretch of time. And, as noted, you don't leech significant amounts of metal out of the cup unless and until you leave the liquid in the cup for about 3-4 days AT LEAST. So, unless you're GNAWING on the cup as you drink? Yeah...
