Are Corn Strippers Worth Buying?

Corn is great. Cutting it off the cob is not. Can a corn stripper make the process easier, neater, and safer? We bought seven models, priced from about $7.50 to about $24.00, and used them to shear off kernels from ear upon ear of both cooked and raw corn.

My game for stripping corn is to get out my old angel food cake pan, and a sharp knife. The pan has a hole in the top of the tube in the middle, so I stick the tip of the ear in there, a few quick swipes of the sharp knife, and the kernels fall into the cake pan. Very little mess, and no buying a tool that does only one job.

I can knock out a case of corn and get the milk from every cob in less than 10 minutes with just a chef knife. Of course I used to work in a restaurant kitchen that utilized the best in season produce and the corn was utilized in many dishes. It's simple just cut the big end off so you can slice down the cobb. If your knife is properly sharpened nothing goes flying around and in fact if you're doing it correctly then you'll end up with kernels still sticking together. The worst part is shucking the corn but normally that was done by the dishwashers when they weren't busy.
@beezalbub7325
@beezalbub7325 Год назад
@@christianoliver3572 shocking is super easy. Cut off the big end (about 1 kernel of corn waste) then grip the tassel end and slid the cob out. Roughly 99% of the silk is gone. Plenty of ytube videos showing the process, I've done it and it works great

I’m in California’s Central Valley where fresh off the farm fruits & veggies are abundant and inexpensive from May - Sept. We love fresh corn but I’ve never canned any b/c of the mess with kernels flying everywhere. I’ve resorted to going outside to the patio where our dogs will clean up the debris. This shucker looks like a winner. Thanks again for testing items I’ve considered, but I usually tend to stick to my knives & cutting boards. I think I’ll try this, it looks like it resolves my “flying kernels”.

Got the third type. Mine was only ~$1.25. I only use it for cooked corn and it works great. I don't see how the winner is any better when it comes with sizing or the wrist. It is still a fixed diameter and you are still doing the same twisting motion. It is slightly neater but that is just a matter of using a bowl versus a plate but cleanup for mine is just a quick rinse under the faucet. The Norpro GripEz looks like a better option. Someone is also selling a version with a drill attachment which would solve the wrist issue if you are processing a lot of corn.

I have the oxo corn stripper. It's your technique that is making it unevenly cut the corn off the cob and spatter everywhere. You don't hold the cob up in your hand or in the air. Lay the cob down flat on your plate or cutting board. Then draw the tool down the corn cob. I can cut the kernels off the cob from tip to end and the kernels cut evenly and stay in place on the cob. Try it.
@johnlcallaway
@johnlcallaway Год назад
I use the oxo brand and love it. Take a large bowl, then invert a smaller bowl inside. Put the large end of the cob on the small bowl and have at it. Trying to hold the ear with one hand and cut with the other doesn't work at all. Before I got the oxo, I used a knife with this method. If one uses it right, it does a very good job of containing the kernels and cutting the right depth. It only took me a couple of ears to get the hang of it.

I have one that was my grandmothers that kinda of resembles the first model except it’s made of stainless steel and has a great knife depth setting mechanism. It allows you to just cut the tops off and the scrape out the meat and juices with only a little of the tough corn kernel. Great for making creamed corn, or the Southern delicacy of fried corn. You can’t beat it.
@blueberryblues3365
@blueberryblues3365 Год назад
I have used a few of those. The OXO type or the Kuhn Rikon - yellow one with corn cob handle work great if you place the ear of corn flat on a sheet pan with sides. Not vertical as they showed. Then you simply run the tool over the ear from end to end, while turning it. All of the kernels are removed and are contained in the sheet pan. IMHO the one they suggest would be a pita to remove the ear from and clean. When corn is in season, I use it all the time to make corn souffles and corn salads.

The wooden cutter you rejected first works pretty well if you want cream style corn rather than whole kernel corn. The southern method is not to just get the kernels off but it is to cut them off 3 times. With a knife, you take a very light cut first, a deeper cut next and then turn the knife sideways and scrape...3 strokes. The wooden cutter has 3 blades and do all three at once. If I want whole kernel corn, I will buy a can of it. If I want cream style corn, I will use the wooden cutter. It is a lot faster than a knife and bowl. I wish you well.

Considering I can do it with a butter knife without making a mess or cutting too deep, my own opinion is that corn strippers are a waste of $$$... I think the trick is to not have too sharp a blade and the angle you run the knife down the cob. Also, the RSVP International Deluxe Corn Stripper has one other, very major, flaw - not all corn cobs are the same size. A smaller or larger cob won't work as well in that thing, so...no thanks.

This is one of the first time I have disagreed with the test results, especially throwing out a device that may not have been tested to its full potential. I have one of the wooden kind, which was the same kind my grandmother used. However, we never used it to remove just the kernels. It was and is used to remove the kernel but to also score the kernel to obtain the milky substance, which results in one of the best cream-style corn dishes - without any cream. Our favorite corn for this is Silver Queen. All you need is the right corn, the stripper and salt and pepper. You can make corn chowder dishes out of the results or eat it straight - minimum three servings!
