In this video I discuss whether jobs in engineering are hands on, more computer work, or in the field. Some people might have the wrong image of an engineering job which may cause confusion down the road. The good news is that engineers do everything listed. They make computer models, they work with hardware, and they can go to sites where their projects are being constructed. However, you will notice that a large majority of engineering jobs are desk jobs because that's where a lot of design work and engineering drawings are done. The hands on work is often left to technicians, operators, machinists, and construction workers who physically build (and sometimes test) the designs made by the engineers.
Note this video only discussed the core engineering work that you'd do at a company and didn't account for meetings, reports, and more of that work that you typically will see at a job as well.

You've touched a critical point here, as many students on mechanical engineering have chosen this degrees because maybe they are passionate at cars,.so they may be thinking that if they graduate as a mechanical engineer they will be experts in all that have to do with repairing cars, and its not the point, so while going through their subjects at college they get dissapointed when everything they only learn its nothing but math and physic.

Great topic. This video was really needed to expose what engineering jobs really look alike. My math professor says he is sometimes very surprised to see non technical people studying engineering just as they can pass theoretical courses but then they can't go through the practical aspect of technology.

Thanks Steve! I saw this question on so many forums about engineering that it was an easy pick for a topic. I also think many people have the wrong idea about what lots of engineers do so hopefully this helped a little.

Oh yes! I don't understand why these engineers do not apply for technician positions..... One of my classmates is a technician and he was recommanded to enter engineering but he has no interest to do an engineering job.

Watch out for the "program management" type jobs. Companies will look for engineers to fill these roles, but you will be condemned to endless and useless meetings. These meetings will bog you down and stifle your career as your tech skills will deteriorate. Stick with hands on positions! BTW, I have over 20 years experience as an engineer in the auto industry.

This is so fucking true lol😂😂😂. It happens in aerospace industries.

Some people like to be in management. It usually pays more money. But yes certainly be prepared for your engineering skills to degrade if you’re in management. You’re just not going to have the time to do it.
@arnaudj2708
@arnaudj2708 2 года назад
but why are companies hiring engineers to do this job ? apparently no engineering skills are needed for those... they could hire someone from another field, and pay him less
@neilkurzman4907
@neilkurzman4907 2 года назад
@@arnaudj2708 Because an engineer will understand the product and what the challenges are in bringing a product to market. Many engineering graduates will go right to their MBA and go directly to program management. Some engineers will move up to management but many don’t like it. But others do. If you bring a business graduate and then they have to learn the engineering challenges of the business. With some do better than others.
@Cam-cb4io
@Cam-cb4io 2 года назад
@@arnaudj2708 For engineers, program management is very constrictive position. A person can be pigeon holed in their career very easily. Unless you're an engineer you will not understand. Stay away from program management.

You really should have over a million subscribers! I'm starting electronic and embedded systems engineering here in Ireland thanks to you. Before I found your channel I was having alot of second thoughts because I left school early and found math very daunting and only worked in technician jobs and on fishing boats haha. i'm an electrical engineering student, i've held a lot of desk jobs before and even up to now in college. None so far have to do with my major, all i really want in terms of a job is to not purely being on a computer. Building/simulating/designing circuits is still enjoyable to me no matter how i'm doing it, but maybe a few times a month i'd love to be in a lab analyzing things or experimenting with concepts for my application. just to have a bit of a changeup every so often.

I will see if I can put a video together on this because obviously it's not something easy to answer very quickly. From a quick search software engineering, biomedical engineering, petroleum engineering, and environmental engineering are fields that are growing much faster than a lot of other engineering fields. And with software engineering having over a million jobs just in the U.S. I would say that's one of the most in demands jobs out there. But in terms of specifics like whether nanotechnology, electric vehicles, and so on are most in demand, I will have to look into that and can do a video later.
@yaredmamo7451

Caribbean Atheist, I can't speak for every single job or company. But if you want to work at a company like facebook, amazon, or google as a software engineer/developer, you will very likely need a four year degree (or more).
