Are engineers human? | Patricia Galloway | TEDxManhattanBeach

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Geek stereotypes and a misunderstanding of what engineers really do has contributed to the very real, world-wide shortage of engineers. Engineer Patricia Galloway shares the list of the world's most serious challenges, poses that engineers are the best qualified to fix them, and shares how the media and changing public perception might be good for the engineering profession and even better for the world.
Did you ever have a dream that was so far from your reality that you never thought it would come true? Patricia Galloway did. Because she came from an impoverished part of the country and a very poor family, she never believed her dreams could ever come true. When she got depressed, her mother would always say, “You can do anything if you really want to. Don’t let anyone tell you no!” She kept repeating that phrase, and so with full confidence that she could do anything, Patricia conquered the world in ways she could have never imagined.
Her fairy tale story came true-so much so that she has sat around the table with presidents and dignitaries, traveled around all seven continents, and climbed up the ladders of success by shattering the glass ceiling. Her adventure stories will excite you, make you laugh and might even make you cry, but hopefully they will reinforce how important it is to communicate to others what it is you want to do, stay committed to your goals and have the confidence that you can do anything. The ending to the fairy tale story of the little girl is that when she grows up she never wants to go to sleep, because her reality is finally more exciting than her dreams.
The “Game Changer” Patricia most admires is Elon Musk, because he has dreamed and done the impossible. His ingenuity, confidence and the willpower to believe he could do anything defied those who told him “no” and made private space travel and fast “cool” electric cars a reality.

debnadaviebna From my experience, tutoring and arguing with engineers, they have little understanding of science and more often than not go on just calculating garbage iwth no understanding of why or how it works. This seems to be a reoccuring problem as others have experienced it as well and let's not forget the Salem hypothesis (which if you do not know I'll explain)

debnadaviebna It's sweden where I live, albeit I have noticed this issue in US to with engineers that are dumber than a sack of hammers. The salem hypothesis states, I quote "If you are a creationist that claims to have an education in science, you are an engineer"

Engineers tackle the best types of problems. I feel great being able to impact the world in a positive way. Great video, we need more people in STEM working on all the complicated problems of this day. Esp women and minorities, as the field can always use expertise outside of the existing stereotypes. Cheers!

Outstanding Presentation Patricia! Truly inspired me to "be an Engineer..." as I am one of those entering into retirement. As a male or "just an engineer" there has been little or no "glory": I was the first to hire women into the engineering programs of our organization but alas we were ALL the first to go when cut-backs, RIF's and layoffs occurred! The company no longer needed long range planning, design and maintenance of their infrastructure... Sadly as we are well into the 21sth Century that infrastructure is crumbling. Yeah for the next generation of Engineers for soon our country will wake up! Thank you again for your inspiring presentation. :-)

I'm an engineer in the UK. During my time in industry I've found that women do want to be engineers and scientists, I don't believe the problem is one of attracting women to engineering but one of retaining women in engineering. With a few exceptions, most women I've met who started as engineers shift into the dark art of management or business development. Leaving gender aside, I believe the profession fails to attract more people because is a though degree not commensurate with pay at the other end. If the median salary of an engineer was similar to, say, that of doctors or lawyers make no mistake the profession would have no problems attracting top talent.

I would bet on my left nut that what she said was the "no. 1 response" was grossly exaggerated and skewed. That is how older people view young people and was bound to get a happy response but as a 19 year old its just not true. Most don't give nearly as much of a fuck about what you think of the as you think they do. The reason young girls do not go into engineering is because most have been conditioned to not get excited/interested in planes/cars/space. Sexism is very subtle.
@actionjessie
@actionjessie 9 лет назад
you are correct on the not being conditioned to like cars and such for mechanical engineering which is one of many types of engineer but i definitely agree with her comments on the media's influence. if just one of those sex and city women or women on any sitcom/drama were an engineer it would be a different story in terms of representation of women in the industry. Women (and men) are conditioned to think being a Doctor or Lawyer is a cool job and well respected, then maybe finance and sciencejobs and tv makes their jobs look exciting and interesting.I was born in the mid 80s I got into engineering a bit after high school mostly because I felt I wasnt capable because 'engineering wasnt for girls' as I was growing up, tbh I didnt even know what it was, most people I talk to dont! sorry for my bad grammar i just got home from work and my brain is fried and lazy
@DenverDeathrock
@DenverDeathrock 7 лет назад
Girls often just don't find it engaging and I agree. There's a claim that in more egalitarian society, people choose even more gender traditional jobs, because they have that option. Why would engineering arbitrary be sexist, but being a medical doctor isn't. Most new doctors are women. Women find medicine and dealing with people to be rewarding. There is nothing wrong with this. My sister is an engineer, I don't think she felt much pressure or if she did, she doesn't talk about it much.

STEM has a boat load of jobs, which pay well, and you can land employment very fast in this field. There are lot of jobs in this market, which they cannot even find skilled employees for, so they will pay you very well, even over $100K/year with 2-3 years of experience, or even out of college, with the right internship (which pay good for internships). The only thing is it has to be applied sciences, and practical to the economy.

I like this talk better than some others that suggest that engineering jobs and environments should be changed for women. This is more realistic. I recall years ago someone making what I considered an outrageous statement: how there should be more "magic" in science to make it more accessible to girls! What? Definitely not: that is not how science works! I am glad she is promoting engineering for both girls and boys. Myself an EE working in IT all my life, I agree that we need more engineers, who can solve all kinds of problems, and build "neat stuff".

I didn't notice any need for engineers in anything mentioned. Plenty of established technologies, with established body of knowledge in technical planning, design, and management, and its adaptation and implementation. The work of technologists, not the thing called "engineer". Engineering takes place at the frontiers of science and technology, we have little need to work at the frontier, the primary task is to implement and sustain our proven technologies.

depends on the degree. Maybe for computer engineering, but for civil engineering that's completely false because in order to do design work (90% of civil engineering jobs) you need a PE license which you can only get in the US by going to a US accredited school.

@@MooresvilleWayne They wont because 1) Engineering from other countries are vastly different from US engineering. For example, Chinese and Indian engineers can get their degree in 2 years in their country. 2) US engineering is accredited and highly regulated, which means that even if they did allow engineers from foreign countries to work in the construction industry, they cant do any design. 3) The reason why its super regulated is because a single miscalculation in a building can kill a lot of people, and each person costs about 1mill. So businesses want to avoid collapses as much as possible. 4) Even in industries where they have outsourced work, such as Northrup Grumman, they are reeling back on that because it costs more money to outsource and have a failed product than not outsourced product that works I also want to point out that I am a senior in civil engineering student who has studied abroad. I also encourage everyone (included non-US citizens) to study US engineering, but they shouldn't get their degree in engineering in a different country and work for design in the US, as that requires a PE license; an unqualified engineer can actually kill/injure people.
@MooresvilleWayne
@MooresvilleWayne 2 года назад
@@justinavila7305 I agree, and argued in the same fashion, to a BOA suit. But they first brought in "Software Engineers", from India, then exported the same jobs to India. If laws are changed, anyone and any profession can be in danger. Hands on jobs are the most resilient. Suits look at titles and make decisions, often simply on a whim. Question, can a highway be designed in India? Honest question ... just curious. I know the site and soil conditions are a major consideration. Once that data has been collected, where is the creative work done?
@justinavila7305
@justinavila7305 2 года назад
@@MooresvilleWayne An person from India who has taken an ABET accredited engineering course can design a highway, but anyone from any country can not design any structure without completing a bachelors degree in an ABET accredited degree (only in the us) and getting their PE license (also only in the us).

It's a little disturbing how even TED talks continue to under represent minority women & women of color in these presentations. Progressive policy is to lend a voice to the underprivileged & the disenfranchised. Yet, the very women in Western society who still suffer the most from conservatism & the religious right, and who are lacking in social mobility and financial independence most often, are time & again finding themselves sidelined in favor of upper-middle class white women. In the year 2015, something about this mentality is becoming very worrying.

Eirik Magnus Larssen sorry... i'm male... and i'm from Russia. As far as i can see you must stand together with this "upper-middle class white women". Because this is what matter... this rational person try to get rid of this household wife(or something like this) stereotype as much as you try to represent minorities problems. We all humans... peoples... after all! Moving forward, that's what's important.

Grim Faker In other words, you harbor white supremacy beliefs.

Eirik Magnus Larssen Racial diversity does not matter, what really matters is MENTAL diversity. I don't have anything wrong with minorities, but they should not be put in the spotlight simply for their skin color. Ideas are worth more than racial diversity

This is what the mind of a progressive sounds like. "Yes, I understand she's trying to break down gender stereotypes and get women into highly equitable careers... but she's *white* " This is why Trump won and will continue to win. Progressivism is on its way out.
