I rode an $80 bike from Walmart in the Kansas Half Ironman 🤣🤣. It was my first (and still the only) triathlon I have ever done. I wasn’t going to spend thousands for a bike for my first cycling event. My goal was to finish and I did 👍🏼🤗

My daily is an 80's track steel frame with miche pistard, all second hand, fixed gear, a keirin mounted front brake. The whole build cost me around 200€ (plus changes of tires and a chain since then). I don't go that much slower with it than my carbon gravel bike with road wheels on the flat or slight uphills. As soon as I have to spin or power a climb it's another story.

it’s funny cuz I used ride a Walmart bikes and my friends would always beat me to a race with their trek bikes, then one Christmas my parents got me a jamis entry level bike and dusted my friends and had to wait for them. budget bikes really gets you strength and determination

Love the message of your video! I managed to pick up a cheap MTB off marketplace. It was like an old 23 year old Magna with some issue for 40$ but after fixing it, it does the job. Yes, it is heavy, but its a good work out and gets me from point A to point B.

Mitch, I'm an OG subscriber from your printing video days. I mean the following as a big compliment: You're a total nerd. I see the same enthusiasm and curiosity in your biking videos as well. I ride rented city bikes almost daily. They're bulky. They suck. Their seats and gears are trashed, but I love riding. You've inspired me to "upgrade" to a budget bike of my own. Cheers.

This is a great start - great video. Here is why I say it is a great start: I argue that the difference in price between solid mid-tier bikes and elite bikes does not make up in performance - there is a massive diminishing rate of return the higher you go up. The difference between a $14 000 bike and a $2 500 bike is a lot less than the difference you saw in your video. However, this is never tested by anyone. Sadly.

My 800 dollar Fuji now has 6000 miles of Fondos, MS150’s and group rides. I pass many, many bikes that cost ten times as much. It’s not the bike, it’s the biker.

Budget road bikes with a good balance between performance and price, thats what I am looking for. Most of the time on this hill is made by the weight of the bike, the thickness of the tires, the stiffness of the frame and things like that. A basic aluminium road bike with thin tires and rim brakes will cost you around 1000 USD and weighs less than 9 kg (19,224 pounds). Try comparing with that and see if the price is worth it.

Coco's was a bike shop on Riverside. They sold cool used bikes about 10 years ago. I think that's why it's called Coco's official trash truck.

Being so short and needing extra small frames and sadly they can only hold one bottle of water and no room for a tire pump. On local slow pace group rides I now bring a small backpack for my tools tubes etc because spandex and road jerseys are totally out of place 😂😂🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🍻🍻.

IMHO, the best way to get semi- decent speeds on budget trekking/ hybrid bikes is to get one with a rigid fork - usually the cheapest sus forks can't even be adjusted and end up sapping your power when hammering up the hills, they're of course also heavier and less aero than rigid fork in the same price range. Another way to ge semi- decent speeds on road is to swap whatever chunky stock tires it came on with with and even an entry level road bike tire - even with wider rims and tires (in my experience i had to get for 32mm on my budget steelie) the difference is very noticeable.

I wonder how time would change if you add weight to your road bike to match cheap bike. That way you eliminate weight and measure how cheap components/geometry affect speed.

My road bike is $1k. I’m not a hardcore cyclist, so the bike does as advertised. I also have an older hybrid bike that’s half the price. That also does the job (slower and heavier but better in all weather conditions). Would an expensive bike be better? To an extent, but the big question is would I be strong enough to make that more expensive bike worth it? (Probably not)

You spent thousands of dollars on that road bike and you could just make 30 second difference. So if you are not race rider, is it worth it all that money? You burn calories in any bike anyway. I can climb 30 seconds after no rush.

Comparing a 200$ budget bike with a 5000$ road bike.....nice. Methinks, just changing the tyres to smooth rolling ones will reduce the difference to about 1.1. But then how can people self appoint themselves as "pro"....if not riding a 5000$ bike?

These are all guesses of where I think the 50W comes from Low RR tires ≈ 3W/wheel Deep wheels/bladed spokes ≈ 5W/wheel Better chain/lube/bearings/jockeys ≈ 6W Lateral stiffness ≈ 5W Aero profile of bike/skinsuit ≈ 15W Rest to weight

If you're just a regular guy I think in my humble opinion it's too expensive to pay $5000 for a bike especially if you don't live in a rich neighborhood that shit will get stolen the first time you go to a grocery store or 711.. While 20% is definitely alot especially for a professional athletes but for average guys if the goal is to exercise then why is it a big deal if you need more effort ?

In the past, I estimated my nice full Deore mtb is about 10% faster than a normal bike. And when I switched to roadbike, I find that it is 10%-15% faster than the Deore mtb. So roadbike is definitely at least 20% faster than an average bike.

Have you tested any e-bikes.. and if so, do any come even close to an off-the-shelf pro bike*, in terms of center-of-gravity (lower/narrower), long stems, disc brakes, electronic wireless shifting systems, etc... BMC TeamMachine SLR01 Trek-Segafredo: Emonda Movistar: Canyon Aeroad CFR Astana - Premier Tech: Wilier Zero SLR Bahrain Victorious: Merida Reacto Team-E EF Education-Nippo: Cannondale Supersix Also, any thoughts on conversion kits.. like Swytch Go or Yose or Smartfit? I imagine it's in the same class as lower-priced ebikes.. Aventon Level 2, Soltera.2 , Gravel Roadster v2 , Velotric T1 ST or Velotric Discover 1?

I haven't tested any e-bikes. Based on your list you'd probably want to go with one of the performance e-bikes like the BMC Roadmachine AMP. I don't think you'll find the performance you seem to be after with a conversion kit. There's a lot of integration required that would negate any aerodynamic gains. But with a strong enough motor, you'd be fine anyway 😂

@@MitchBoyer Can you make it a reasonable entry level road bike perhaps a Giant Contend Claris type road bike with a 11-34T cassette or similar models from Trek, Specialized etc. I just keep seeing videos where the worst possible road bikes are used for comparison with freewheels and low quality drivetrains with no decent high gearing. An entry level Contend is about 10kg and I feel that will be the magic point to deliver a huge percentage of performance at a low price but most content creators avoid this level of comparison possibly because it wouldn't please their sponsors. I could imagine the wattage comparison being only 5-10 watts. I reckon such a bike could be the sweet spot when it comes to diminishing returns.

@@bonzobanana1 I actually have the data on this! I had a Giant Revolt, which was about 11kg with tubeless road tires on it. For the same effort up this exact climb, the Giant required an average of 12 watts extra to match the time of the 8kg BMC Roadmachine. The first part of the climb is not steep, so I expect the aerodynamic wheelset gives the BMC some extra gains in addition to the weight difference.

For very little extra expense, better tyres and clothing etc, I suspect the inexpensive bike could have closed a lot of the gap compared to the overpriced bike. And it would have been fairer to compare them on a ride with no overall change in ascent.

I like the Huffy bicycles. I own several, the ones I have are from the late 80s with a diamond frame, no slope on the top tube. I find the Huffy a great bike and was impressed with it in the late 80s. I like the one piece crank for simplicity and easy maintenance. I also use a Roadmaster with a sloped top tube. My Viscount is a great road bike as is my Schwinn Super Sport. Like you say Mitch, all bikes are good. As long as one keeps riding one will be in lean shape. Nice video that you made. Informative and interesting. Best Always!

Okay that "budget" bike wasint even in the same class as ur bike. Meaning u could of gotten a budget road bike from like Wal-Mart I truly think the tires are what make the difference my guess is if u used same class bikes the difference would of been closer to 5% difference maybe 8% any chance u return that cheap bike and get a budget road bike from Walmart
