Very nice video. I think we archers as a whole tend to spend more on what we think proper arrows are than what we actually need. I prefer cheaper arrows simply because my hearts break when an arrow does.

Agreed and same. It's easy to lose sight of the fact that humans have been getting away with using unoptimal arrows for tens of thousands of years. They might not have been getting quarter-sized groupings at 100m, but it's undeniable that they were still able to be extremely successful. There comes a point where good enough is good enough for the intent.

Argh! I don't have a problem with fiberglass as a material for arrows but in 20 years of shooting and teaching archery this video is the first time I've seen a fiberglass arrow with flush fit points. With out flush fit points you'll be lucky if you get 3 hits on a target without the point coming off in the target, and that is a nightmare. So if you get fiberglass arrows do yourself and your club a favour and get the flush fit point ones.

I use them all the time for target shooting. Love them ... I just bought 12 Sharrow fiberglass arrows off of Wish for $22.08!!! You just can't beat that price for a 500 spine strong, durable, nice shooting arrow to use with my 40lb & 45lb recurve bows!

Do you shoot off the shelf with your bow? If so, did you replace the plastic with feather fletching? I have been wondering for awhile just how innacurate plastic vaned arrows would be shooting off the shelf...
@joedaniels4646
@joedaniels4646 2 года назад
@@scottphipps3577 Yes I do shoot them off the shelf. I set my nocking point high. (I actually use finger savers, and set them about an inch and. A quarter to almost an inch and a half depending upon the bow and the brace height.) All my bows are center shot so with the nocking point high the vanes don't even touch the shelf provided the brace height & nocking point is high enough. That way the arrow has time to lift and the vanes don't even come into the picture because there is no contact with the shelf! Or very minimal if it happens to touch it. I also pad the shelf with a piece of short fur in case the vane does make contact. It cushions the impact so that it's not bouncing off the shelf. So I have found that if you number one, use a truly center shot bow, Two have the brace height at least six and half inches back. Three, the knocking point set high on an angle of about 30° (roughly..) Forrhly, have the shelf padded, you can shoot vanes with No Problem & with a little practice be deadly accurate. I actually don't even own a feather fletches arrow. I hope this helps you. God bless ya!

@@joedaniels4646 Thanks Joe! That's good information and it helps a lot. A lot of traditional archers completely avoid vanes, but I have suspected for awhile that there is a way to shoot them off the shelf. God bless you as well.

@@scottphipps3577 The last video I posted on my channel I shot the cheapest fiberglass arrows available on Wish with rubber/plastic vanes. I used a regular 40lb recurve set up just like I told you, and got 6 out of 8 arrows in the bullseye shooting at night with spotlights on the he target from about 13 to 14 yards and I suck! LoL! (I have only been shooting for about a little over a year and a half with 2 months off because I almost died last November & was in the hospital.) Right now I'm not shooting because I injured my shooting shoulder, but hope to be shooting again in another week after I rest it a bit But trust me when I say you can shoot vanes, you just need to know how to do it. You may have to spend time working out the specifics of nock height, brace height, padding your rest with even cheap imitation fur, but it can be done easily. On my channel you can see Mollegabet bows I have built all with a center shot shelf, I make my own strings out of braided fishing line, and set them all up to shoot only vanes arrows. Like I said, I don't even own an arrow with feathers. I have about 110 arrows from different brands and all are vanes. I have a friend who also shoots nothing but vanes, he showed me how easy it is to do. So if you chose to do it, I know you can ... Good luck with it brother!

@@joedaniels4646 Really interesting and good to know, because one of the things I like about a bow is its potential as a hunting tool in an emergency situation. Being able to use whatever you can get your hands on is a definate bonus to me. I will check out your channel. Thanks again for the info, and I hope you have a speedy recovery so you can get back to archery.

Finally a video that makes an objective assessment of fiberglass arrows. The needs of a competition target archer are much different to those of a beginning recreational archer, or even a small game hunter? So surely that has to be your starting point in shaft selection? Hair splitting accuracy and flat trajectory may be of paramount importance to the former but count less to the latter, where cost of arrows lost counts for far more. As for risk of splintering, there are many horror stories attributable to early carbon arrows and also wooden ones, so all arrows should be inspected often for damage. Also heavier fiberglass arrows absorb much more of a bow's energy and carry more of it to the target, which is important to a hunter. A sure way to destroy a modern high performance compound bow is to effectively dry fire it by shooting carbon arrows that are too light. But IMHO the real reason why nobody now mentions fiberglass arrows has to do with low business profit margins on a cheap to buy product.

Fred Bear used white fiberglass arrow back in the 60’s. My 1st set of matched arrows were fiberglass. They were more like carbon than today’s crappy fiberglass arrows. The highest quality as a brand called Microflite. They came in all sizes. I bought some vintage ones fro ebay and Made point collars out large diameter aluminum shafts which I cut in 2” lengths. They shoot great and are heavier than carbon. Easton aluminium arrows made them obsolete.

if you like shooting heavy warbows then solid fiberglass rod is a great arrow material. you can get heavy weight without shooting 13mm tree branches and their inherent clearance issues. some basic engineering skills will be required to taper the ends though.

If it works. How many buffalo died by wood? Things get too technical. Just knock it. Pull. And release.

@@deanemery7336 OK. First grade level... Native Americans, once called Indians, used wooden arrows. They killed hundreds of thousands of buffalo using wooden arrows. Get it? Let's take it further. If they could kill not only buffalo but all game to sustain thier lives with wooden arrows, then people arguing about fiberglass, carbon, plastic or titanium arrows seems pointless. No pun intended. If it works for you, use it. Nock, pull, release.

Well Jim Star 35 are the only arrows I use, mind I’ve only been using a bow for the last 5 years and not got round to trying anything else and why should I as I only use the bow in the back garden at ranges of 10 to 20 yards. At under £10 for 5 arrows and not £20 plus pounds for one arrow.

Next you'll be telling us that wooden arrows are no longer relevant, at the end of the day relevancy is in the eye of the user.

The only issue I have with fiberglass arrows is for a beginner there actually too heavy.. This combined with the fact that beginners mostly have weak bows, the arrows just flop out of the bows.. Might convince a new archer that the sport isnt too exciting.. If you bought a 25lb bow and some micro diameter carbon arrows, you would think that the bow is very powerful, if anything it would be exciting because they move so fast since they weigh nothing..
