Thanks for taking us fogies along with you into the woods this past year, Bjarne. You set the bar awful high, and I appreciate the thoughtfulness and skills you use to keep moving forward. Hope you stay safe and keep making your great videos.

@@BjarneButler Yup, its a good one, my late Dad drove logging trucks way out in the back blocks hauling native logs. Years later he operated a Skyline tower crane and Draglines for many decades. Cheers.

I was wondering when you were going to loose your saw, I never dropped mine at the stump. I know you like to make video's, but they are not worth losing a good saw. I wish I was young enough to saw again, I still have 8 saws I think but I'm 73 now and retired. Thank you for your video's, my biggest tree was a tamarack right at 65 inches many years ago.

Hey man, that gunk looks kinda like the root rot fungus that is killing all our fir trees. I may be wrong because we have an orange or purple fungus that's causing the root rot out in the Kootenays. Underground it looks just like what you scraped on your axe.. Great video and such a beautiful day for you to work and shoot.. Keep em comin brother 👍
@trentgay3437
@trentgay3437 9 месяцев назад
That white stuff is mycelium or the root like structure of a fungus. Most likely a mycorrhiza or beneficial fungus that trades nutrition with live plants through contact with the root systems.

I think it’s more likely to be a slime mould. Very strange things - single cell organism but behaves more like a colony of ants.

I had a 372XP that was ran over by a hoechucker and after a new handlebar, tank and air filter cover it was back to work the next morning so yeah, I'd say they're pretty indestructible.

I had a large poplar tree fall on a Husqvarna 65 many years ago. I saw it squish flat and I saw my life flash before my eyes.I was a kid and it was my dad’s saw. It only cracked the handle! I started it up and kept cutting. Die cast Stihl would have been in pieces.
@iffykidmn8170
@iffykidmn8170 9 месяцев назад
I had a Stihl 044 mid 90s pinch in the back cut as the tree rolled of the stump pulling the saw under neath, bent the bar and no other damage.

What’s going to hold that cliff side together once those roots die off?
@foxlake6750
@foxlake6750 9 месяцев назад
The cliff side is rock and the forest will regenerate, before the stumps rot, since they are so big.

@BjarneButler
@BjarneButler 9 месяцев назад
There used to be lots when I first started. Actually I think the average age was 55, but that was 20 years ago. Now when I go I to camp there a lot more younger guys in their 20 & 30’s. Those old timers had to learn the hard way when safety wasn’t priority and there wasn’t any official training regulations like now. It was basically the “Wild West” of logging/falling when they started. That takes a hard toll on the body after several decades in the bush

99.99% of the time it’s fine to leave by the stump. I’ve cut down so many trees, the probability of something like that happening is not slim. I’ve have seen many crazier and fluke things happen in the bush. 🤙

I've fallen trees on steep terrain, more selective removals to give more space to the remaining better trees, no congestion of fallen trees like you deal with. Before they get pulled out, bucking up the trees with all the tangled limbs and whatnot, and having to move around in those holes, it looks like a real demanding chore.
