One thing I really don't like about US planners are the stupid sayings and quotes that they are filled with. Like "Chase Your Dreams" and "Girl Boss" etc. That's so tired and "basic b*tch." Those so-called inspirational sayings really make me groan and roll my eyes.

Monday start and PAPER QUALITY. Paper quality cannot be overrated. Plus, very few spiral bindings, which catch on bags and get in the way of writing.
@pandabugdiaries2384
@pandabugdiaries2384 2 года назад
Cannot agree with you more on paper quality! Monday start is great too, though the school planners that my school makes are Monday start anyway so I don't notice it all that much. Personally I actually prefer spiral bindings though, pages can be more easily torn but they lay flat without fuss and without creasing the binding which can look unsightly, plus I can use more of the page because the edges of the page isn't being inhibited by the other page or creating a valley into the unknown.

i will say, as someone who lives in japan currently, paper quality really depends on how much you're willing to spend. sure, compared to American products in the same price range, they're probably better, but not all Japanese planners will be. basically, im saying if you want to cheap out, buying japanese wont necessarily get you much better quality

I lived in Japan for several years as well and I know for a fact that not all Japanese planners are designed with simple color palettes and minimal images, either! I always liked buying the small character ones from my local stationary store, along with tons of decorative stickers. There was one publisher that did a lot of Western fairy-tale themed planners that I absolutely loved. It had full-color illustrations on every page. I really miss those planners!

Similar price points will still get you a better planner from Japan. My €12 planner from Muji (Japanese store) ticks all the same boxes mentioned in the video, as well as some they didn't mention: Monday start, great paper quality, minimal bleed-through, minimalist design, lie-flat, very thin and portable while still giving me enough space to decorate and write out descriptions for every single day of the year, etc. A planner for that price produced in the US or even here in France would be utter garbage... I would know as that's what I used to use for a few years. I used to get planners from western supermarkets for roughly the same price point every single year. One year, I finally decided to save up and get the Hobonichi Techo. I absolutely loved it and bought it the following year, but the price was way too steep to keep it up in the long term (especially with customs into France), so I tried out the Muji planner and it's basically like a budget Hobonichi Weeks with the price point of a supermarket student planner.

I’ve been bullet journaling for years in Stalogy 365 notebooks, but I decided to go with a new system for 2022 because I just got overwhelmed with having to set up spreads every month. So, I settled with the Hobonichi Cousin Avec. I can’t wait to use it-everything is created for me, I just have to write in it. I have ADHD and sometimes prep work can frustrate me, like having to draw out monthly spreads. Plus I get discouraged if it looks messy or unorganized. Your channel is the reason I’ve gone with the Cousin Avec!
@JessicaComptonHR

@@JessicaComptonHR I got the Avec because I wanted room to slide in a 1/2 year Stalogy for journaling/brain dumps. It kind of freaked me out lol the thought of having 2 planners at once, but I’m now considering picking up the Hobonichi Weeks. Right?? Same here! I got the jibun techo A6 size and it wasn't roomy for me. I used to write in it for the first few months, but I kind of got tired of writing too small, I had no room to really record what I ate and stuff. I also wish it had English translation because it's not optimal to me to go on the website just to find translation for each page. I also didn't like that every month on each day had the mood tracker and then the weekly set up also had the mood tracker so I was recording my mood twice and having to do that just felt redundant to me. But I do love the set up and the design of it. Wish they had an English translation one like they do for the hobonichi. This year I just got a simple monthly undated planner. It has lines for each day of the month for planning and I prefer my monthly boxes to have the lines in it. I got the Apica monthly I think. It was cheaper so yeah xD

I'm from Brazil, and I believe that here, we use a mix of different Japanese planners' style. Non dated pages, thick pages and smaller sizes and Monday start

I don't want to be that person, but a slightly more expensive minimalist planner at Target is pretty much exactly the same as some of the Japanese planners being shown. Like, mine has a section on each day for mood, water intake, weather, etc. It even has a back bullet section. I think planners are mostly a "how much are you willing to pay" item...

I use whiteboard as planner instead of book since it made me easier to look and money saving I only use book to jot down any ideas or information i got for a project so that i can reread them again later Most notebooks i have i used for drawings, calligraphy and craft books😂😂

I went many years using the Moleskine planner. Now I’m using the 2021 Traveler’s Notebook weekly. I’ve seen that you can fit (with gaps) the Hobonichi weeks into the cover. I’m kinda torn.

As a hospital worker I was always frustrated with the Sunday start. If I worked the weekend it was BOTH days and that is harder to see with a Sunday start calendar.

I spotted one more difference in the Midori MD Diary. The schedule is in a 24-hour format. I personally like that better, but I bet that would drive a lot of people nuts, so I think it's worth mentioning.

I prefer the "spread" style of My Franklin Planner. 2 - pages Per day. Left side tasks & appointments; right side notes. It is perfect for my use-case. That being said, the paper quality is that of standard copy paper. I supplement it with the Kokuyo Campus Diary (free), & the Hobonichi 5-Year Techo.

I resisted Monday start for so long but have come to like it eventually bec sometimes my weekends have overarching sched and it's super rare to have something on sunday extend to monday. It was easier to adjust as someone working vs when I was a student, I don't know why though.

I was curious about this. I picked up a planner while traveling abroad in China and couldn’t peg why I liked it better and how that affected choosing planners since… and this video outlined it all. 😂 the Sunday start does make more sense for me. The quality of paper enhances the aesthetic of paper planning that I enjoy and the simplicity of the pages keeps me focused on what’s important. I keep a sketchbook separately for doodles and drawing. I don’t feel the need for them in my calendar. Glad there’s something for everyone !
