Are Jehovah's Witnesses the 'Happiest People on Earth?'

For the better part of a century, the Governing Body have claimed that Jehovah's Witnesses are the 'happiest people on earth.' But a quick look at the people inside a Kingdom Hall raise a lot of questions. Not only do they look unhappy, but they're regularly reminded that any happiness they DO experience isn't deserved anyway. And if you don't like that message... there is a fireball waiting for you at Armageddon. Let's take a look at their 'happiness' and how this can go from comedy to tragedy.

There are happy and sad people regardless of religion, but the worst part is, if you are trapped being a JW with your family being used as leverage, it's quite literally a killer

Being a Jehovah's witness is not a happy place, it is a nightmare for free thinking people. I was raised to be a good little JW drone. How could anyone be happy when your life is micro managed by other people. I am very happy that I didn't let them shape me into what they wanted. If you love surfing, horses, gardening, anything you love, peruse it and be successful, and when you look back on your life as you get older, you will have good happy memories. Do not be a slave to other people. Don't let your life be stolen by other people trying to exploit you. Stand up. Thank you Surviving Paradise.

I was born in and left when I was 35. I married at 22 and that lasted for 14 years. Throughout my teens I remember having depression and dark thoughts. I even rehearsed seeing if I could still reach the trigger with the barrel in my mouth. When I was being dragged through a judicial committee to be disfellowshipped at age 20, about 2 weeks before the announcement, I awoke from a dream that would repeat for the next 15 years or so. When I awoke, I couldn't move, I felt squashed into my bed, and my first response was to say "the name", but I couldn't get the breath. I finally spewed out some version of it, and felt like everything lifted. I was convinced for many, many years that I'd just experienced a demon attack. I told this to the elders of my committee, and instead of helping me, as I sobbed relaying the events to them, they disfellowshipped me. I was reinstated in 6 months out of pure spite, but that's another story. This event, though, I would learn was a full-blown anxiety attack with a dose of sleep paralysis. One hundred percent explained. Why? Because I was in the process of my life and eternity being decided for me. I firmly believed that if DFd, I would be a crispy hot dog, as it were. Constant states of guilt, fear, being observed by invisible perverts and your own congregants at all times. Hypocritical parents that seemed to only revel in the rules they could enforce under the veil of bible standards, while being emotionally, physically abusive and rampant with alcoholism. Throughout my entire marriage, during which she would have to wake me from that same dream and my loss of breath trying to rid myself of demons, my wife ALWAYS was trying to get me to seek therapy and get on medication for my moods, anxiety, anger, and depression. Of course, that would just sent me into a rage. I never did until I left at 35. The combination of some therapy and about 3 years of anti-depressants, mixed with no more JW influence, my state of mind is at least stable in these last years. I have no doubts what-so-ever that the beliefs and environment of that community ruined my mind and all of my formative years. In fact, though feeling relatively stable, I will never be able to completely wash the stink of my rearing out of my being. So much lost time. I can't say I'm "happy" now, after all, I'm shunned by my parents, siblings, children, and everyone else I ever knew for the first decades of my life, but I do feel untainted and no longer afraid. I should say, I have not had that dream or the "demon" experience for 20 years now, almost immediately after I left. This was a great show, Stacey. Thank you so very much. It was very confirming.

You are stronger thank you think. You have the guts to leave. Move on and keep pursuing what is right. Instead of following man made rules. JW rules are scary, manipulative, anti social, self centered, most are non biblical base rules. Do not vote, do not read other churches publication, do not, a lot of do not. Do not attend parties such as birthday, Thanksgiving. And other a lot of do not. Advice: DO NOT ACCEPT THEIR INDOCTRINATION AND RULES.

THIS. This is what broke me out of there. I looked around me and I saw 'happy people,' but I was not happy. So, as I had been taught, I thought the fault was in me. I wasn't doing enough. I didn't have enough faith. I wasn't good enough. So I did more; I prayed for faith and I hoped I'd get to where I was good enough. Meetings, assemblies, conventions, studying, praying, trying to make friends, trying to be a good JW. Doing a Bible study in order to be baptized. I strived to do more and more and more. Maybe I'm more fragile than most, idk, but I didn't get very far before I broke. councilor During all of this, I faked being happy at the meetings. I would be crying my eyes out at home, or sitting in a corner wanting to die, but at the meeting, I'd put on that happy face. noticeable

No, they are the saddest, sickest people I know. When I left, even tho I was devastated by the circumstances & the loss of all I knew...it was such an instant relief! And it just got better & better. All the tension & pressure & hours sitting on my butt in meetings about nothingness. Happiness is exactly what you said. Finding & doing what your soul purpose is. Yes, coffee in the early morning, puppy breath, driving to music, floating thru space on the back of a horse, the smell of the air, the day after the storm & the storm itself, camping, viewing wild animals, the wind & sun or rain & snow on your face, hard work (real work that accomplishes a goal), conversation with intelligent people, living the life we are in! Challenges dont bring you down, you thrive on them. No wonder JW's are unhappy. They are twiddling their thumbs, with their hands tied behind their backs, while this life passes by, in favor of a life that is the figment of some other mans imagination. Sad.😒 My sentiments exactly about the Caleb & Sofia cartoon. Wow, those men need to go to jail! Thank you, always appreciate your words!

So well said! You said it so much better than I did! All those things that make life so enjoyable are lost on JW's as they spend their life 'waiting' to watch everyone destroyed THEN they get to be happy...but only for a 1,000 years, then unhappiness is unleashed again!!! One of the biggest breakthroughs I had in therapy was when my therapist showed me the Map of Consciousness by David Hawkins and she explained that the highest levels of consciousness involve the feelings of enlightenment, joy, peace, love and reason and the lowest levels are guilt and shame. And anything that invokes those feelings in someone isn’t good for them. That’s it. That’s all there is to it. That put it tangibly in a way that was so instrumentation in my healing process. The organization is dependent on its followers saturating themselves in those lower levels of guilt and shame because at the height of consciousness is enlightenment and the things that lead to it are things like joy and peace. Because enlightenment would cause people to LEAVE the organization there is literal incentive to NOT allow its members to enjoy true happiness. It’s such psychological Soviet Union era brainwashing it’s crazy to see it from an objective plane at this point in my life.

Not in any particular order, but the things that make genuinely happy: 1. Music. I’ve actually gotten into trouble before because unless I’m sleeping or in the shower I usually have at least one earbud in. 2. The great outdoors. I live in Oregon, and I love to just… go outside. Go for a walk in the beautiful PNW woods. Appreciate the beautiful, green, rainy, tree-covered landscape of the PNW. Go to the coast. Absolutely love it. 3. Food. So many delicious flavors and wonderful textures. It literally keeps alive. It’s fun to make and eat. Healthy food. Unhealthy food. Comfort food. Fast food. Simple food fancy food. Slow cooker/crock pot dinners I throw together before I leave for work/class in the morning and come home to a delicious dinner and my place smelling absolutely amazing in the evening. Just… food. 4. Smells. Pine/balsam. Burning wood. Incense(which I burn all the time). Lilacs. Lavender. Mugwort. Clean water. The smell of the PNW after/while it rains. The smell of a home-cooked meal. My favorite perfumes and lotions. I could go on and on. 5. Animals. Cats and birds are among my favorites. 6. Sewing. Sometimes I’ll literally just cut a small square of fabric and sew or embroider whatever comes to mind on it. So fun, relaxing, and satisfying. 7. Just being alone at home. Sitting in front of the fireplace with a warm cup of tea and some lofi, vaporwave, swing, jazz, classical, or other chill genre of music playing on the stereo or my earbuds. 8. Meditation. It has, and continues to, help my mental health and life in general immensely. 9. Hearing people’s stories of leaving cults and taking control of their own damn lives. Lol.

This is a superb podcast and so true. Look around any Kingdom Hall and you see a lot of tired, unhappy people, because the driving force is fear, which is the flip side of the same coin. My ex wife was constantly depressed because whatever you do for WT was never enough, to the point she didn't want to get up for field service or meetings. Your point of the NW Translation of "Undeserved Kindness" instead of God's "Grace" is so true, and just keeps JWs feeling unworthy and useless, living in fear of dying at Armaggedon. I have had some very bad moments in my life, caused by alcoholic Elders, going to my wife behind my back, being completely unaware, coming home from work having a wife attack my character out of no where. Me sitting alone asking myself "what just happened to my life" and both times my wives divorced me and I was never told why. Going through that embarrassing 😳 moment in divorce court, telling the judge, asking the judge, to please have someone tell me why this woman is divorcing me? Unreconciled differences! Never was I violent, never was I abusive, always at work. Never having any concrete reason why! 😒 until I found out later, Elders gave the advice to divorce me. I confronted one of those Elders, and asked him directly if He was communicating with my wife behind my back, his response was, absolutely not! A bold face lie. Turns out they were communicating at least a year, having her beg me to put our phones on the same plan, then when I did, she was getting my phone records turning them over to the Elder's. Then I started getting calls from long time friends saying someone called them asking why they were sleeping with me, and did they know I was married 😒, finally all my friends no longer communicated with me. Three years later I contacted a friend, and was told someone sent a message that I was molesting my youngest daughter. Refusing to give a name, but the phone number they gave to me. Turned out to a false phone contact. So I called my daughter, she said no one ever contacted her about it, that is why my daughter who at one time gave parts on the school, told me she will never become involved in that Cult. Then she said something else that really hit home; "Dad, if you ever want peace in your life, you need to be more careful of who you make your friends." Remember the recent Watchtower article? You Can Trust Your Brother's" Study Article 37: November 7-13, 2022 You Can Trust Your Brothers. I realised my 25 year old daughter just gave me sound advice! I had that pounded into my head for years, you can trust the Elders! The big lie that totally destroyed 2 of my marriages! Elders in wolves clothing, some complete drunkards, playing with other mens wives in the Congregations! But don't worry, Jehovah is in complete Control! 😉 Just pray to Jehovah! He will not turn His back on you!!! My children still Communicate with me, knowing the truth, but none have returned to Jehovah's Witnesses. Now I have adopted my wife's niece of 9 years. I have her in a bilingual school she speaks 4 languages now, French, English, my wife's dialect, and West African Pidgin. When she came to us she could not read even one word. Now she reads from the Bible difficult words. And on top of that I am teaching her piano, which she loves! And is doing better than I expected. Elders tried interfering but I told them to put it where the sun never shines! Does this sound like the happiest group of people on 🌎 , when they conduct themselves as major backstabbers?

I know SO MUCH dirt on a number of elders that I've known over the years. Sometimes they go through the steps to acquire the position solely because their wives nag them into it for their own prestige of being an elder's wife. Some never let go of their past, always bragging about their worldly past. Lot's wife much? The headcount of how many elders I've watched be drunk at parties is way up there. I believe a Superbowl party at an elder's house is just cover for getting plastered at some point. I've known two elders, who when meeting with wives inappropriately for counsel, ended up having affairs and ruining all families involved. One of them went on to marry the woman and they actually were reinstated and lived out their lives as JWs. That only tells me that, like other religions, you just have to play the game. You can commit the worst "sins" imaginable and be good as gold in a matter of months. One of my last efforts while still on the inside to get help from the elders, my begging them to help me learn how to hate what is bad because it was ruining my life, simply told me a story about a gay man who became a JW, LOVED being gay, loved orgies, the whole nine, but simply didn't do it anymore. The moral is that you will NOT hate what is bad, you'll love it, but you just stop doing it. That didn't help. I left the org about a year later. Elders suck!

And there is that 'repetition' that they employ to control people's lives. As mentioned in the episode, you can tell an untruth more than once, it becomes fact in the human brain. It outranks ONE truth in your mind....because it's been repeated. They know what they're doing.

After I'd been out for about 10 years, I went through a "what's my life's purpose" phase and went back to the meetings for about 2 months. I was DFd of course, so nobody spoke to me other than one meeting with the elders stating my intentions. Those few weeks, and the droning on and on of the exact same, simplistic, nosey, cornball talks and studies just put the cherry on it for me. With a clear mind, stepping back into that environment, it is numbing how one could ever have actually believed any of it. I've only stepped into KH once since then for my Dad's funeral. Even that sucked because they just exploited the whole event for more propaganda and said so much stuff about my dad that just wasn't the case regarding his "faith". I'll never step inside of one again, I don't care whose funeral it is. My mom is still alive, I think, and I've already decided to stay clear of that entire event if I'm even notified to begin with.

Makes me also think of when we were told that we should not even be sad at funerals because we should be happy that they would now be sure of a resurrection. How we react to death is yet another reason to judge your faith. If your too sad then your faith is weak. A relative unexpectedly lost her husband and the rest of my family was commenting how well she was doing because she had the hope. I told them she is not doing well, she is in shock. Months later she was crying all the time and they did not understand???? The control of our natural emotions is mind boggling. The shunning, the pressure to constantly do more, the endless negative gossip, the reinforcing of their dark message of Armageddon, no holidays, etc. It is quite a lot. When I was started fading 2 years ago, I was given a pamphlet by a coworker explaining God's grace, it was my first time really examining the difference between "grace" and "undeserved kindness". The concept of Grace emphasizes God's love. You are are right, it is a psychological ploy to make you feel worthless, and guilt you into doing more for the Org.

The pursuit of happiness will always be an elusive, unnecessary, and harmful goal because basing your life pursuing a feeling is a wasted life. CSLewis writes of this in “Surprised by Joy”. Contentment however is achievable and more realistic. Contentment is arranging your life so you enjoy the present moments such as music, flowers, rainfall, friendship, a good book, a cup of hot tea. Joy is those little bursts of elation you get as a reward for practicing contentment.

The entire 'elder arrangement' appeals to a power trip. There are always a few men who mean the best, but they are usually overrun by those that want control.

JWs are happy because they have the truth and a hope looking forward to never ending life under God's kingdom. Revelations 21:4. People today need to be realistic in that all of us [ JWs and Non-JWs] are under a great deal of stress and pressure by this system of things. Of course, the world is in the power of the wicked one and we live in his world.

It is very annoying when watching JW propaganda videos they show how happy it is to be a JW. It's no wonder they get the uninitiated hooked at times (I want some of that). As a child you just accept these things. It's no wonder when your critical thinking develops there is a tendency not to believe in God. I listen too what I consider some insightful thinkers but whenever they mention God there is a groan inside of me because of my childhood indoctrination.

How can a person consider themselves happy when they are constantly being hammered because they are not doing enough in service, are not devoting all of their free time to the benefit of the organization and finally giving all of their discretionary funds to the organization? We are made to feel like dirt. It’s stressful beyond belief. This is not happiness, it’s misery. Every time that you hear the term Governing Body or the word organization try substituting the word Mafia. The similarities are numerous. Happiness. Ones from within and not from somebody else trying to manipulate us.

Watchtower swaps out Joy for happiness. The push "happiness" but neglect joy, which is a fruit of the Spirit. The same way they put on "nice," but neglect kindness, another fruit of the Spirit. But then the fruits of the Spirit come from knowing Christ. They have not the Christ, nor the fruits of the Spirit, so they have to substitute "fruits" of the flesh.

If JWs are the happiest people on earth, then does that mean they all live in Disneyland? Because I have it on VERY good authority that Disneyland is the Happiest Place on Earth. Evidently, JWs all have a season pass to Disneyland as is obvious from these two “present”truths.
