In this episode we take a ride on my Banshee Paradox v3 enduro bike shod with xc race wheels. I'm trying to see just how different my bike feels with the exact same geo, but totally different wheels and tires. I believe swapping wheels and tires can completely change the way a bike feels. Here in the Midwest we love our weenie tires. I run Racing Ralph 2.35 and 2.25 tubeless. Fast and grippy in our clay and sandy soil. One trip to Copper Harbor in a northern Michigan and I had a razor slash within 30 seconds though. Tires are very area specific.

Good overview, about what I expected to happen. It’s all situation specific based on terrain and riding style, but like a lot of things probably setting up somewhere in the middle would gain some of the efficiencies without completely losing the traction and comfort of a more burly setup. For me in CO with climbs and tech I can see setting up for 80% of what I ride👍🏻

Great review on the tires and wheels, I tried the same thing on my Norco Fluid, went from 27 x 2.6 to 27 x 2.35 on the tires. It helped some but I just need a lighter bike. Have a great day on the mountains.

You are absolutely right. I have a Tassajara that I have run Velociraptors, 2.1 front and 1.95 rear, and also Nevegals, 2.3 front and 2.1 rear on the same light wheels. These seem to have become outdated tires now but good in their time. Nevegals were great where trail conditions dictated but with the Velociraptors the Tass handles and accelerates like a sports car. The difference is of course tread but more importantly weight. Great videos and I especially like it when you make changes to bikes and take them on challenging trails to see how they perform.

Great video. Really emphasizes the importance of finding the right tire for your terrain, and how much it can change the riding characteristics of you bike. Here in the Midwest, there are a lot of guys going with DHF's for more rowdy trails, and then the other end of the spectrum are the Racing Ralph, Ikons, etc... Last season I started riding Vittoria Barzo/Mezcal front/rear 29 x 2.35 around here, they are really a good trail/xc tire, run about 100 grams heavier than the Ralph, Nics and Ikons, but the sidewalls and casing are tougher and the traction takes it up a notch without feeling like you have to work harder on the climbs. They're now making a 29 x 2.6 and I have GOT to get one for the front of my current bike. Based on the 2.6 Mezcal I put front of on my rigid SS, the volume, ride, weight (810g), and traction should be sublime! I'd sure be interested in your opinion how they work out in Sedona.

Stranded in the Middle East working but dreaming of buying a Specialized Chisel or Epic as soon as I return to Alabama. Your videos are great and confirm 3 things I have been thinking about lately. We are probably going to retire to Arizona (Payson and surrounding high country is the first place we will check out), I am getting a XC hardtail and my retirement gift will be a 2019+ Miata RF. Seems like you have checked all three of these boxes! Our company bike is an 35lb alloy Evoke hardtail 29er but with the most basic components (like cable disc brakes). The frame is a large (too big) but it has non-slack angles so is still fast and fun to ride for daily exercise. Thanks for this channel...it has made my time over here a little easier. Keep the hits coming.

While watching this, i remember my experiment with different tyre on my xc hardtail 29er. I found the end result is so fascinating that i am sharing this here. You know Schwalbe smart sam tyres are pretty popular in hardtail bike segment. As it is designed for basically xc or commuters in mind. While Schwalbe's nobby nic tyre is for downhill or trail enduro riders. But after riding with 650gram 90 tpi performance line nobby nic both front and rear on my 29er xc hardtail, i found it performs much faster and speed up quicker than two 860 gram, 90tpi performance line smart sam. Though nobby nics knobs are so aggressive and spaced wider because of that their rolling generates considerable vibration on paved road. While smart sam center line is so jam packed that it felt weirdly muted if you came straight out of nobby nics. At the end tyre's grip, rolling, longevity is always important to consider but the biggest factor while considering any tyre should be the weight. Oherwise, how come a less weight enduro tyre felt more comfortable to ride than a overweight xc tyre!

I have a Spot Brand Longboard 9 with a pair of Spank Oozy 295 Trail for 2.3” DH tyres and a pair of Stans ZTR Crest for 2.1” XC tyres. I sold my Full Sus before Christmas because I just use the hard tail all the time and swap between wheels. I sold my flat bar road/commuter bike at the weekend as, besides recent lockdown jaunts, it never got used and have put some of the cash towards some Panaracer GravelKing 45c which should fit on the Stans. Hoping they are here for the weekend to experiment but the theory of two wheel sets definitely runs true.

I thought as much - great tyres for climbing, flowy sections and naturally grippy surfaces, but they do fall short when it gets really rocky and gnarly. There's a hand full of rocky features on one trail near me, which I do clear with Ralphs and Rays, but I need to go slow and be precise about my lines. For my local trails in dry conditions the Nobby Nics are already feeling a little sluggish - imagine that... ;) althoug they do hold up better when it's muddy. Nice experiment!

This vid was very interesting. Trying to "fine tune" my current wheel set. My CushCore consideration is all with keeping my wheels as light as possible but having solid trail capability and not beating the heck out of me during a ride...lol... plus some rim protection. The 29x2.4 Rekon's on the rear wheel at ~20 psi feels pretty good; 30mm ID rim. That size would keep me in the range of CushCore XC. May get to drop a psi or 2 and that is significant.

Yep, nail on the head regarding tires are the major component in stopping power. It's another misconception in the motorsports world where people think they can slap a big-brake-kit on their car but not change out their 400 treadwear tires thinking they'll get massive performance gains.

Great video. I recently got back into biking and picked up a Marin Muirwoods to ride my neighborhood trails up here in WA. My primary objective is to drop weight for an upcoming hernia surgery. In the short time I’ve had the bike, I’ve already dropped 20 pounds with 20 more to go. Since I started riding again, it’s become the part of my day I look forward to the most. I’m already researching my next bike that I plan to invest in as a reward for dropping the weight and getting my surgery done. This was the perfect topic as I am torn between a trail bike and an XC bike. I really like the idea 💡 of putting lighter wheels on a trail bike as opposed to beefing up an XC bike for for more trail oriented riding. Lots of research to do. I took a short ride on a Specialized Fuse and plan on checking out a few others. Hoping to get my surgery done this Winter, so will likely join your Patreon soon. Thanks for all the great content you put out. I moved up to the Seattle area after living in Tucson for 17 years. I really connect with your content. It has truly served as a big inspiration for me. I have Maxis ardents on my xc geometry hardtail . Now they are not a true xc tire and claim to be somewhere in the middle between trail and xc . They are the exo type so not all that light but they are fast but can be unpredictable in soft corners . So after a couple washouts on corners lately and they are wearing out I am going more aggressive and hope for more predictable traction . I going with the mountain king 2.3 in the back and 2.4 trail king up front which seems to me pretty aggressive for an xc style type bike . If I get better traction which instills more confidence than I will consider it a success and willing to loose some speed and climbing efficiency. I also live in a high desert rock environment of southern California . It is kind of like snowboarding on a bike . Kind of fun but a bit scary . So It will be interesting to see if I draw the same conclusions as you and more than likely I will and feel a bit safer on the bike with the more aggressive tires

Hello. I have the Ragley Big Al, love it! I also have a gravel bike, and wondered if putting lighter wheels and faster tyres on could close the gap between the Ragley and my gravel bike in terms of speed and efficiency over paved areas and hard pack? It would be nice to use the big Al in longer rides with mellow trails and road as well as commuting. I'm holding onto the gravel bike( giant revolt, 44mm tyres) as it's just way more efficient. TIA. Edit. Thinking of two wheelsets, one XC, one 30mm trail. Where I live there is terrain of every sort.

Question since watching. You mentioned how the tyres felt skitty due to having a lower contact point. Does having a slacker HTA make it harder to maintain traction? Usually a slacker HTA is accompanied by a tyre with plenty of grip which makes up for that. On a bike with a steep HTA your weight is over the wheel a little more meaning that even with a lower contact point you can in effect influence the amount of friction/weight over the front wheel?

We don't have big downhill runs. Although i wish we did. I drool over some of these modern bikes. Xc bikes aren't for me. Trail bikes are getting to aggressive for standard trails.

Different tools for different jobs for sure. I have a 17.3 pound hardtail and the thing absolutely flies. But the setup (including/especially the geo) means I don't take it on Bobsled or Zen or Gooseberry or anything like that. Really anywhere other than xc trails unless I swap wheels, but that only does so much. But my bigger bikes, like my Rallon, are overkill for most things, including just about everything in Park City. And I was really glad to have the light and efficient bike for when I rode White Rim in a day (and it's great for keeping up with the NICA kids). This is how I justify n+1 to my wife, and so far she has been accepting :) Hoping her acceptance translates into something like an RSD middlechild or Whyte 905 in the near future as I think one of those with a couple of wheelsets would be an ideal setup for most days, as you mentioned. What are you using to gauge tire pressure? Just going by feel? Also is a cassette considered rotational weight? Keep up the great videos!
@hardtailparty
@hardtailparty 4 года назад
I'm just going by feel. I'm pretty decent at telling tire pressure by feel. Cassettes are rotational weight when you're pedalling, but not when you're coasting. Since they're closest to the center of the wheel, they affect the effect less than a tire or rim. They're not generating much centrifugal force compared to tires and rims.
@wesleecyphers5707
@wesleecyphers5707 4 года назад
Gotcha. Makes sense.
@GeoAnaGR
@GeoAnaGR 4 года назад
Cassette is rotational mass, but it's too close to the centre of the movement to create any considerable force. On the contrary on a FS bike, on the pivotal movement of the rear triangle against the front triangle, the parts hanging on the far edge of the rear triangle are over 40cm from the pivot point creating quite an effect on rear suspension movement, in case you were wondering why the cassette+ derailleur weight are considered for that case

Well, most fast rolling tires are going to suit a 25-30mm rim width. Most people who care about light, fast tires don't have 35mm rims. I love 35mm rims, but they aren't the best for xc. Most fast rolling tires max out at 2.35 wide. You can check out the new maxxis WT xc tires. I like the ikon in 2.35, but I wouldn't want to run it on anything wider than 30mm. With a 35mm inner, you're going to want something around the 2.5-2.6 range for them to have the proper profile. if you had 27mm rims, I'd recommend the ikon and something like an ardent race.

What trails were those? Everytime we have been to Sedona this year we have got our butts kicked with nothing but climbs

trails are in the video description. There are no shuttles in Sedona. You have to earn your descents.

Cool experiment but do you think the cush core cancels out a lot of the weight savings from swapping to a carbon wheel?
@hardtailparty
@hardtailparty 4 года назад
No. The xc cush core is super light (150g). These tires and wheels are crazy light too. This is still over a pound lighter than my normal setup.
@hardtailparty
@hardtailparty 4 года назад
If I didn't have cush core, I wouldn't make it to the bottom of the trail and I'd end up getting a flat. The sidewall casings on these tires are paper thin, and won't hold up to this abuse without cushcore. The alternative would be to remove the cushcore and get a tire that weighs 200-300g more (cushcore weighs 150). So it's still a weight savings.

Strange you dont like it... I ride a steel frame kona honzo with a 120 fork and I ride flow arch wheels on it with 2.4 front and 2.3 rear and never complained about harshness.... but I also dont ride in Sedona, most of my trails are either muddy snowy or really loamy lol. I live in upstate ny!
@hardtailparty

apples and oranges really. For upstate NY I'd probably love this tire/wheel combo. Also, a stan's arch is going to be way softer riding than these enves.

I am with you though on tire choice. I ride a dhf in front always, rolls way faster than a dhr and a assegi and in my opinion better grip than both as well. But change the rese up depending on what season or where I ride. I switch between a aggresor or ardent.

Would love to see this with 29” XC tires. I have 27.5+ and have considered a second set of 29” for San tan since it’s not rocky and more smooth/flow. Any suggestions?

For what it's worth, I have a couple of bikes where I run a super light 29 setup (Stans Podiums at 1295 grams!!) for fast and flowy, and a 27.5+ setup (heavy Syncros) for fun. For my Spark, for example, I've won fast XC races with the Podiums, but then I've bombed Ahab on the same bike with 27.5+ Syncros. Just a totally different bike with the two wheelsets. I don't know San Tan, but I've been running a couple sets of the Podiums for a couple of years and they've been fantastic. My first ride on them was Bobsled in Salt Lake City, and I was super cautious on them given how light they are. Since then, they've survived plenty of trips on Bobsled, and they've survived my kid abusing them on NICA courses. If you fit within the weight limits, I'm very high on the Podiums. That said, the 27.5+ is way more fun when I'm out to ride just to ride. Hope that helps!

So you know how most bikes have relatively steep effective seat tube angles but slack actual seat tube angles. What if it was the other way around so you had say a 73 degree effective seat tube angle but a 93 degree actual seat tube angle. So as your seat post goes up the seat tube angle increases putting you in a better pedaling position the higher your seat is and a position with your weight more centered for descending with the seat down. I know it sounds crazy but could it work and what would be the disadvantages of this.
@hardtailparty
@hardtailparty 4 года назад
Effective seat angle is really all that matters.
@samvilla6290
@samvilla6290 4 года назад
What I’m saying is you put the start of the seat tube well behind the bottom bracket and then put the seat tube at such and angle that the effective seat tube angle increases as the seat post extends. A diagram would explain it better
@hardtailparty
@hardtailparty 4 года назад
Most bikes have a slacker effective seat tube angle than their actual seat tube angle. They claim the "actual" so it looks steeper on paper. I understand what you're saying. In the end, the effective seat tube is the only measurement that matters, since you're only using it when it's up and you're climbing. When you drop it out of the way, the seat angle doesn't matter at all since you're not sitting. There is a point where too steep of a seat angle becomes a bad thing, but very few bikes seem to be approaching this limit.
