The most tragic thing is that comedy movies are basically extinct. No movie is made just to make people laugh anymore. What About Bob? The Great Outdoors, NL Vacation, etc. If it's not a direct remake or a brand tie it just doesn't get made and that's awful.

Marvel should have gone on hiatus after Endgame. Instead, with some rare exceptions, they've churned out mediocre to terrible films. The bigger problem though is streaming. People really only want to go to see a blockbuster kind of film on the big screen. I think they're still interested in the other stuff, but they'd rather watch it at home.
@menheerMaytrap
@menheerMaytrap Год назад
agreed, this is the real issue. People go to the cinema for spectacle, because its worth the price of admission, big ass screen and surround sound, a theme park through and through. For deeper "real" films (for want of a better word), people would rather just save their money and wait until it hits their streaming option of choice

The last time there was a phenomenon like superhero movies that I can think of was the glut of Westerns in the mid-century. I love Roy Rogers movies, but have you ever tried to watch a whole DVD's worth in rapid succession? They're not exactly art. John Wayne did 184 films, almost all basically the same. Same with Randolph Scott's 108. But the Western is basically dead today. Cinema will get over Marvel.

There’s basically 2 types of movies: interpretive fiction, and escapism. Marvel movies are escapism - not very creative on the whole (or risky), focused on safe bets and eye candy. Interpretative fiction is intended to challenge the viewer - the filmmakers are willing to be more risky, far more likely to be ambiguous. For example, Oppenheimer challenges you - and has something to say about human nature… on the other side of the spectrum is Ant-Man 3 which isn’t trying to do all that much. In fact, it’s really trying to set up for another set of movies, to keep you coming back to the theater to spend more money. There’s a place for BOTH types of movies… when escapism dominates and interpretive fiction is forgotten, we miss out on important opportunities for filmmakers to expand our horizons, to build empathy in people, to teach us… we need balance, and the industry has been out of balance for some years now.

As an older fan of Marvel Comics (collected them during the Jim Shooter era), I was pleased when Marvel started making their own films, but they weren't the kind of films I ever recommended to my peers. The films were mediocre, but I love the characters from the comics. When Disney bought Marvel, I was disappointed. Not so much about the films, but I thought the comic book company (and industy as a whole) would suffer as the comics would take a back seat to the films, when it should be the other way around. After a few films I started to get bored with the genre, but still watched them and hoped for the best. Joss Whedon's Avengers gave me hope that the quality of storytelling was headed in a more satisfying direction, but 2013 was just more mediocrity. The Russos' Winter Soldier was an excellent film. I won't call it great cinema but it was good, and on a higher level than any of the previous films. Then came Guardians of the Galaxy. I know it was popular, but it completely destroyed my suspension of disbelief concerning the MCU. Since then the films have largely only been weak comedy films set in the Mavel sandbox. The Hulk was turned into a joke long before She-Hulk came out, and Thor was utterly destroyed by Love & Thunder. Even Spider-Man is a shallow version of the character I know from the comics. Aside from the two films I praised above, I wouldn't recommend any of the MCU films to anyone who loves cinema. Edit: I should add that I would recommend the Netflix Daredevil and Punisher series, and even Jessica Jones thought it wasn't a character I was familiar with.

Is he wrong? Look at its influence on shared universes, shoddy VFX, and the godawful reliance on multiverses (ie eliminating stakes in storytelling). Not to mention the tribalism aspect its fostered, where you either have to love this or hate that. Plus skyrocketing budgets and the destruction of the actual movie star. The MCU was also one of the huge drivers for Disney +, the service that made every other studio think they had to get a piece of the pie. Scorsese might be suffering old man yelling at clouds syndrome, but he’s far from wrong Not saying CBMs are necessarily bad, but their influence is a huge negative imo

There need to be more, lower-budget, more-niche movies that don't need to pull huge numbers to be profitable. This way, you can get less filmmaking my committee and "suit" intervention. As far as Mr. Scorcese, he's speaking from a position of bias. He is not the kind of filmmaker to make Marvel movies. Some would question if he were even capable. But he's good at the genre he does make - a definitive master, even. So he's promoting his work while downplaying the work of others. It's not unseen human behavior. A lot of the writing in the Disney/Marvel movies has gotten very bad, though. Something(s) will arise to take their place unless they course-correct. Also, Hi Vuti.

Marvel/Disney has sucked us dry one by one as an audience with their elaborate never ending Universe and every time I see a movie trailer now I just feel like this could be another one I can skip and once you start going down that road there is no looking back. Sometimes having too many choices can be overwhelming and every Marvel or comic movie is marketed as though it's a must watch. People on a budget loose faith having put their money down the drain on movies that are dumb and meaningless in the scheme of things and there's only so long people can take it for. People had to literally push important things aside in their lives in order to make sure they did not miss out on any of the Marvel movies when they came out so that they'd not be the clueless ones or worse have to hear about the spoilers from others. The Avengers Infinity War when it came out was a worldwide event and I was one of the unlucky ones to have it subjected to me during a buzy schedule where I couldn't've watched it but also couldn't escape social media which was rife with commentary around it

What Scorcese said about them being theme parks was spot on, they really are - but theme parks can be/are fun the biggest movies this year - so far - were Barbie and Oppenheimer, both great films that earned a tonne of money. Killers of the Flower Moon looks awesome, and im really looking forward to seeing it No one is forcing anyone to watch a comic book movie, you might as well get angry about rom-coms or horror films that you have no intention of seeing Cinema is doing just fine ......and Goodfellas (my all time MS favourite), Casino, The Aviator, Wolf of Wall Street and The Irishman all take place in the Scorcese-verse

If Marvels is ruining cinema Star Wars is just as much of a culprit. I had fun with these movies while they were out but I got intense superhero fatigue with Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier and now these F*CKING MOVIES NEED TO TAKE A HIKE. And I'm blaming the ticket buyers! Stop buying tickets! Luckily I think they're not but it's 10 years later in my opinion. I did catch Black Panther on Netflix because it was free and I was curious- probably the worst movie in the MCU that I've seen. The worst. Then later I did see End Game but that was to please the adopted daughter of my dad. It was something where I did a little thing which was sit through this movie and it meant the world to her and I was glad for that. It was okay. The first Avengers was a lot better. The first Avengers and Iron Man are probably the peaks of the Infinity Gauntlet series. I thought the big opening salvo against superhero movies was actually fired by Terry Gilliam- a great filmmaker in his own right. Check out Brazil if you haven't. Just be aware it's a DARK comedy. Scorcese- I have not come even close to seeing all of his movies but Taxi Driver is Top 2 for me- 1 or 2, I can't decide. Raging Bull is almost as classic. And then The Departed is overrated- maybe skip that one but a much better alternative is actually The Wolf of Wall Street. Dive into that. Barbie- 7/10: Good jokes for the most part and some fun. Some of it really didn't work. But more of it worked than didn't. Pretty solid.

A problem with superhero movies is the genre seems locked into a rather small cast of characters, which originated in comic books, some of which are goofy. Imagine if every movie in the scifi genre had to pull from the same rather small cast of characters. It would get boring. The superhero movie genre will need to figure out a way to break out of the current characters. Else it's the same recycled chars over and over.

Scorcese is just jealous. He doesn't like summer blockbuster type action films being released because it takes the attention away from HIS films. When something "fast paced" and "action-y" is a available OF COURSE the audience (mostly kids, teens, and 20 something's) are going to flock towards it rather than some dramatic depressive, interpretive artsy type film. His self-proclaimed buddy Chris Nolan made a "comic book film" _(The Dark Knight_ Batman trilogy) but Scorcese is suspiciously silent concerning _those._ Apparently his issue is "only" with Marvel. I agree that the recent Marvel films are trash, but that STILL doesn't mean that I will be watching anything Scorcese related. At least Marvel is TRYING to be diverse. Scorcese's films all have the SAME type of actors, he RARELY employs anyone non-White in any major roles, and his thought process is outdated and predictable. Even Chris Nolan learned to evolve. I still give him the side eye for casting a WHITE English actor to play the role of the MEXICAN character Bane, and a White French woman to play the Middle Eastern character of Talia Al Ghul.
