So interesting. There's tales of them being fought after because they shed tears that turned to pearls. And could knit valuable material that was white as frost and could never become wet, could bring beauty, had supernatural powers, and could grant immortality if eaten, etc. And could even make the seas calm for the sailors to safely navigate their ways. I'd have to research into it but there's alot of different stories in different cultures and they're depicted differently in different cultures art too. Also remember that the sailors were out on sea for months, and even talked about being sexually deprived. They apparently would go crazy without women there and have sexual relationships with eachother. But also sounds like they'd go after sea creatures too because they couldn't control themselves. Very weird. Maybe capture and rape a mermaid, then blame the mermaid and say their beauty lured them in, like how you hear how rapists blame their victims.

I've always thought that perhaps there were "mermaid" thousands of years ago, but they evolved into today's whales or dolphins. Because, when you think about it, they're not exactly fish. They're considered mammals! They're super smart and have a unique way of communication, so even if they go really deep into the ocean, they would be able to keep in touch. You know how ocean flora is really important for the habitat, so if they were made to pull out a certain valuable seaweed that mattered for their survival, or perhaps it was destroyed due to the way they were hunted. Evolution takes millions of years, they would pre-date humans if they were a precursor to modern sea mammals. It's probably more likely they became extinct and was possibly an animal that was found in a small habitat or region in the first place a very, very long time ago because afaik there are no fossil records of such a creature. However, fossils only give us a tiny sliver of a look into what once existed. The earliest known stories of mermaids come from Sumerian culture which pre-dates the Ancient Egyptians.
I've read somewhere that sea mammals have high intelligence and have their own code system for languages that could differ in pattern depending on the pack they're in. Maybe these mermaids were a group of sea mammals that unfortunately found their way to communicate with humans or something.

I vaguely remember reading at one point that during long sea voyages the sailors would experience hallucinations (not sure if this is the word I want, but oh well!) where they saw beautiful women AKA mermaids. But in reality they were seeing manatees - which fits the not able to survive. Manatees are easily injured or killed due to their large size and generally slow pace, which makes them vulnerable to being hit by motorboats and caught in fishing nets.
Speaking from an anthropologist's perspective, who also believes in cryptids and spiritual beings, I lowkey believe mermaids or what we know as mermaids were an offshoot of humanity. (Kind of like Neanderthals or Denisovans) But perhaps were a bit more intelligent than us, evolved to be more aquatic. Neanderthals and Denisovans were either killed by Homo Sapiens-sapiens, or actually mated with them and bred out of existence. I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case with mermaids as well. I have read that humans have a physical body that fits our spirit/light bodies. Next one down the line are dolphins. I know this won't make people happy, but dolphins are more like the really ugly reptilian lore creatures and are not benevolent. I don't know this, but some have said it. I saw the loch ness monster in the Caribbean, I know it exists. Don't know if this one swam with head up out of water but looked like it could. This one was within 4 feet of surface and swam down when I swam along side. Smaller one washed up on south east coast year or two ago.
I also don't totally know if it's real but there's apparently drawings of mermaids from cavemen. And it depicts humans with spears killing them and the mermaids trying to get away. I think about this quote that says Hollywood likes to hide things in plain sight. It reminds me of the Pirates of Caribbean with the mermaid tears and how a kiss could make you breathe underwater & it reminds me of the show Siren where I feel accurately depicts what a mermaid would look like. It's likely mermaids were whales construed into the tale of the sirens. If that is the case, it'd be too early of time past for them to evolve, but considering whaling was a big thing back in those days, it may be possible that it cause a change in patterns and migration that affected some things. Whale oil was a huge and sought after thing back in those days that humans couldn't produce, and narwhal husks were very sought after. A caught narwhal in those times could go for up to $10,000 (the price of a small castle at the time).
