Too expensive for me in this time of inflation. I just use logs and slabs I already have to border my garden beds. Different strokes for different folks. I am on fixed income and am inventive to spend as little as possible. I have some raised beds built from wood boards I scrounged for free.

Here where I live in Telladaga County Alabama, the ground is red clay and as hard as a rock. Good luck digging in it to amend the soil. It can be done with a pick axe and a lot of hard labor, but a jack hammer wouild be easier, and easier still, a backhoe-not kidding, power tools are essential, the more powerful, the better. A raised bed makes more sense, and they have the advantage of being higher off the ground, and practically weed free, but I did have a recent problem with a vole eating my onions. It became brseakfast for a hungry cat before I could determine whether or not coffee grounds would drive it away. The raised beds I purchasaed are aluminum/zinc coated, and will probably last 75 years or longer, so they will more than pay for themselves with lower maintenance costs, especially if you depriciate the cost over the number of years of service-going on two years now.

If you ever decide to move/adjust these beds in the future, I've seen others recommend putting down hardware cloth to help keep burring critters out. I'd leave an inch or two of the "cloth" to go up the sides of the beds to help keep it in place. Kevin over at Epic Gardening is also working on a drip irrigation system for this style of bed. It ill be interesting to see how he puts those together. :)

My raised garden beds consist of food safe 18-gallon storage totes ($7 at Walmart), sat on bricks, concrete blocks, a chair or table etc. You can get them in many different sizes; however, these are small enough for me to handle, portable and don't take a month's income spent on soil to fill them. It's amazing how much food I am growing in them this year. Plus, they last for many years.

Cinder block is 1/2 the price (delivered) for the same 4' x 8' area leaving the rest for soil and amendments. And you get all the little hollows for planting smaller plants or cap them for seating while you tend. Take your time and be careful with moving the blocks about and you have something that a tree could fall on and would be easier and cheaper to repair

Cinderblocks are toxic. And a pain to move Also u lose 16" of space per 8" block size. I have used it all. Theseetal beds are best and cheapest

Raised beds aren't all expensive. Those are the luxury raised beds. If you can build up mounds of dirt, you have a raised bed. Gardening is not limited to your budget. Anyone can garden. Forget about cost and work with what you have.

I’ve been growing in the birdies raised beds for a few years - they’re just like the ones you have. No warping, no leaning, no bowing and no decaying. They look as good as the day I built them. I even took one apart and reconfigured it after a year and you can’t tell at all. I love that I don’t have to rebuild my garden beds every few years, and I think these make my garden look neat and tidy.

Definitely an option, I like these over other beds of this type because they do give you choices on your finished bed. Me personally, going to try direct soil gardens next year. Was planning on this year, but I used inorganic fertilizers on the straw bales last year where my garden space remains. This year is a bunch of extra large grow bags. Spent a lot of time and energy filling these suckers so I will use this soil from the grow bags for next years in ground beds. Wish I knew about these beds 3 years ago when I constructed my first raised bed. It is 18' by 42" and 32" deep. I dug down 2' for a hügelkultur bed, and used some of the native soil to fill it. This bed has been so versatile, I made a cold frame on one half and the other half I have a roll up "green house" I use to harden things off in the spring. I call it my "Big Box Bed" I know one thing for sure, I would not be able to make such a bed today, Too old and sore. Another great video Gardener Scott. Missed my first live stream Monday, the weather switched and had way too much to do. .

You can still grow in the ground if raised beds are beyond your means! Sure raised beds are great…I have 4 wooden beds. Lots of buckets and grow bags, also grow things in the ground. I raise a lot of vegetables! Gardener Scott is showing new options! Relax and enjoy! Just grow what you can, where you can! ♥️

I, too, will be making the switch to coated metal beds for my future beds. I have enough wooden beds to get myself along for a while, but I can no longer justify the time or money I spend to make a wooden bed that isn't going to last.

Ever since I saw Mark's on Self Sufficient Me, I fell in love with these, but not the price tag. Granted, over time, these will outlast almost anything (except concrete) and there are minimal skills required for assembly. I've been building raised bed from wood frames and galvanized sheeting (similar to yours) for the past couple of years and they are doing great. Right now, I'm up to (4) of them, with plans to build 7 total. As well as, pots and grow bags. This year, I found an 11' length of 48" galvanized culvert pipe, FOR FREE. This turned into (5) 26" tall round raised beds. Talk about a great score. There are so many great options for gardening and with a little outside the box thinking, anyone can grow their own food. You seem to have a great understanding of this concept and a wonderful approach/delivery for teaching and sharing your knowledge. Keep up the great work!!!

I just grabbed one 20" tall 2.5' wide 5' long It holds 125L. I payed $110.00 on wayfair. If it lasts ten years it's cheaper than buying cheaper plastic pots every year. Well worth the investment.

Although it's easier for the back because you don't have to bend,I can't say the same for the eyes. I can't stand looking at these metallic tubs. I understand the practical part of course.

Wood costs more over a decade. Concrete blocks, protected metal or plastic, last longer. But depends on how deep you want or need them. 4 inches for many plants. Big root veggies? Maybe containers. I work at a store... But ty GS!

Great video! I think the concept is great. But call me old fashioned. I like the lumber look. Especially if you treat the wood yearly. It's about aesthetics for us. Those beds have an industrial look. Maybe as I age I'll consider the shift.

One thing I would be interested in that I did not notice you mentioned was heat. It looks like the metal raised beds would both take in and give off heat faster than a relatively insulated wood raised bad. Have you found that to be true at all? The metal raised bed might hold water a little better, but I would guess not significantly. The price of work is only going to get higher, but then it seems like with the changes we need to combat global warming that everything is going to be more expensive and rarer.

Watched this just to support you, then you blew my world apart. I had NO CLUE there were metal modular beds, even though I'm a single 35yo with ample internet time. My man! I spent TOO many hours breaking skids to make my first 4x4, hit my ankle bone DIRECTLY with a hammer blow, didn't break it. phew. I think I'll trade money for time in my next garden bed excursion.

Love those beds. I purchased mine from Vego. Only plus with them is they give you a rubber piece to put around the top border. I have small kids so that's helpful :) Thanks for sharing Scott!

I love these. Not everyone has woodworking tools, the skills, or help at home. For me, i used raised bed blocks and had wood cut to size at home depot. It worked for me last year but this year I would have bought these. Because btwn current cost of lumber, time, and longevity would be worth it!

I'd put up sheet metal in a wooden frame. Ours is U shaped & 5' wide on sides & end - easy reach zero bending. Birdies & others too $$.

There is more height options than two. Remember you can bury them down wards. You will need to do that anyway for a Hugelkultur fill, which is more economical. Just sink the bed down to the height wanted, the metal below ground will also help prevent burrowing pests.

Side note when considering height for the viewers: I have 24 & 11 inch beds. The critters "mostly squirrels" don't bother the taller beds. The short beds are getting pummeled. Had I know I would of made them all 24 inches.

I replaced my two wood one (they were 8x4x0.5) this year and also ended 3 new ones with 8x4x1 metal raised beds. I have been wanting to replace the two wood ones for awhile, they were just bad. Hopefully these will last me a long long time.

I've been on the fence about metal raised beds. Does the sun make the metal super hot, and does that affect the soil inside?

The only downside to me is that rounded corner. I plant based on SFG spacing so dealing with a radius would be interesting. that being said, screwing all 4 corners together might make for an excellent raised bed for a small shrub; my blueberries suffer in our alkaline soil, so this would be a good fix. Have you looked into DIY Concrete forms for garden beds? looks like they would check all your boxes save reduced portability, and at $4 a 80lb bag they seem substantially cheaper.

I'm thinking about doing raised beds and painting the inside with a bed liner. That should last till forever! I'm also thinking about using wire panels of some sort and lining them with cardboard or weed fabric too.

Great & timely video Scott. Always enjoy learning with you. An alternative along the concrete lines is the Durable Greenbeds from Oregon. They use a mix of wood chips & cement mixture to make their garden beds in a variety of shapes sizes and heights. I recently purchased & putting together now. They are a bit pricey but I will never have to replace them.

I mainly built mine to provide a border and to experiment with Potato growing. Even my in ground garden has distinct sections. They are pressure treated and free lumber sourced. I have a friend who works for the very wasteful home construction industry. Seeing all the metal bed hype. I can now theorize where most of the free firewood on local ad sites has been going to. I think they are nice as an option to regular wood. I looked at the site. It would be helpful to know if the extension kit includes more than one panel, and to say a 2'x2' is just four corner pieces.

I grow in wood raised beds and I also expected to replace them because of decay. 5 years and so far so good but when I do replace them it will be with galvanized metal. Building them isn't a concern because I have a construction background. The pre fab beds are expensive. In fact I was watching a video on them and thought to myself that the guy that bought all of his beds must have spent thousands of dollars on them. It would cost me around $3000.00 to replace my beds with the pre fab ones. My beds are 12" tall x 4' wide and various lengths. I originally built them so I could do different soil combinations and to be able to sit on them. If I ever win the lottery I will buy pre fab beds. Have we all forgotten that growing your own vegetables is supposed to save us money? I'm afraid so. Food for thought.

They stay cool. I have watched a few video's with test, taking the temp only an inch or two from the inside wall and the temp is normal. Also the coating on these is safe and durable unlike using painted metal roofing.

My yard is a mix of rocks and hard clay, typical for Missouri soil. I have been using raised beds for 15 years now. You really don't need deep beds either, mine are 6 inches deep before they hit the original soil. Overtime the hard soil will break down and be more supportive for gardening. However, as I am hitting my 65 birthday I am more inclined to use taller beds, It's much easier on my back and knees than the sort ones. These are very practical for me, I can't build nothing, can't cut a piece of wood in straight line if my life depended on it LOL. So I will be looking into this, main attraction is the easy assembly.

I'm in central Missouri (on the Osage River) and I COMPLETELY understand your issues! :) We also have the wonderful pleasure on our farm of having shallow bedrock. There are areas where you can't go 3 inches deep before you hit bedrock! We also have a TON of iron deposits in our clay here. Not very helpful to try to garden in. :( But, when we built our raised beds, I planned ahead. I have MS, so I knew that I was going to need "deeper than usual" beds. I made mine 18 inches tall so I could sit on them as I am working. I'm SSOOO glad I did! Good luck with whatever you decide to do in the future. :)

Are they available with a bottom ? I for example would have to place them within close proximity to my leach field (septic system) ... while living here in Florida we are in a soil content of mostly sugar sand and fear of contamination

It depends on the type of plastic. I've seen some plastic bins crack, leak, and break in just a couple years. I haven't used them, but Rubbermaid makes some livestock tanks that could probably be used as a raised bed.

Yes, I think they are. I have two metal modular beds, each by a different brand. The only differences were the Vego is about 2” taller, comes with what seems will be a longer lasting/better quality trim and came with plastic protectant film on both sides as opposed to only the outside with the Birdies. Neither one came with the center support rods that yours had, although you could add those for an additional charge. All in all I love them both and both appear to be long lasting products. Some brands are working on making L shaped options which is also really nice. My Husband said last night that he’s going to build me a raised bed from the remaining seamless/snap together roofing we had left over from our well house. I of course went in to mind blown/what do I plant mode…and then had it mentally planted within a minutes(and yes, I’ve already changed the plan twice🤣). We’ll see how long it lasts compared since it’s treated on both sides, however the top and bottom edges will be exposed. I really do think there’s a reason the metal beds have popped up everywhere (I think Lowe’s even has them online now) and they’ll last quite a long time. These modular beds make it so much easier height-wise, especially if you have any disabilities or just have a hard time bending over and whatnot. They’re also really easy to put together. I think the part that took the longest was just removing the plastic film. Thank you for sharing!

hi Scott ! i dont think they exist in Europe , at least not in Belgium , i went this week and the week before to the farmers-market to buy my soil amendements and plants and i never have seen them . but anyway how are you and how is Lilly ? i dont see her anymore , the last thing i now is in one of youre comments by Scott Haed that you say in the comments that she had a operation too , i hope all is well and ok . now everything is planted exept my graved cucumbers because i have to set-up the trellis . now is only waiting for a better yaer than past yaer , past yaer was nothing at all and everything destroyed because of the floods but maybe you haerdt that in the news . this yaer was extremely dry not a drop af rain sins februari and my plumtree seems to giving up because the laeves turn yellow i called the nursery and they said that this way the tree protecting himself . i give it every day a strong spray of water in the hope my trees make it . i give it a strong spray of water every morning and evening but its forbidden because of the groundwaterlevels are to low , this drought in Europe is never seen before so fingers crossed that everything turn ok . see you soon on monday . succes with youre new beds . jp

mine are 28 inches. I used wood branches in the bottom half but putting good raised bed soil is EXPENSIVE!

hi gardener scott, i have four wooden beds and have recenly purchased several of the 32" high metal beds. one downfall i thought about is that in the summer, the beds are not only metal, but they are thin, which may lead to evaporation and having to water your beds more often.

They won't break down in sunlight like most plastics.

If you work in those raised beds with a metal tool and scratch through that coating, it will rust through despite what they claim. I wonder if they are galvanized under that coating or if they assume it wasn’t necessary with the coating.

Zinc? I saw a season long comparison show " Growing a Greener World " and the tomatoes growers with 2 or 3 styles noted that zinc lined tubs, poisoned/killed those plants...so how do your modular beds avoid that?

Could you build a keyhole bed/beds? Being modular I assume you can. I tried raised beds up here in the Black Hills mountains. I ended up with ice cubes that took longer to thaw. It set me back on planting time. That being said our garden family father South of me I can imagine these would work great. We actually are getting snow tonight. I direct seeded some cold crops yesterday. I'm hoping they will be okay. We have about 17 days until the last expected frost date. June 2 is the last expected frost date. That's never certain.

Don't they make a corrugated fiber glass type panel? Wonder how that'd fare.

Fiberglass is used for some corrugated roofing. I don't know of a company using it for modular beds.

Went to the site where you purchased these raised beds. They look like good quality. About a month ago, I purchased some very inexpensive ones from Amazon and had to return them. There were no supports and the sides were so flimsy that walking by it made them fly around. I might get one of these you show in your video. For a seat, I’d made one out of wood that is the perfect height (slightly higher) so you can still sit next to it at least. I bet that would work. Thanks for a great video and very fair review.

Gardener Scott - thank you for the very informative videos. I've used them over the years to educate my Mom on the difference between gardening in Southern PA vs. out here in the Wild West (I'm just a touch up the road from you in the People's Republic). I've been planning raised beds for home, and have 1 final question re: metal vs. wood - how do you find your perennials doing in the raised metal beds over the winter? @@GardenerScott Well, mint is a weed... ;) ;) Am thinking more of asparagus & other perennials, my concern being the lack of insulation from the winter cold & wind in the metal beds versus the 2"x wooden beds ability to keep the soil from freezing. I am thiiiiisss close to changing my plan for four 4' x 8' x 16" raised beds to metal. I am hoping to join the live chat for the first time briefly this am if my schedule doesn't fill up before then.

Gardener Scott I need your help! This question has nothing to do with this current video but I’m at a loss. I have an infestation of pill bugs in 2 out of 4 of my raised garden beds. I’ve tried putting DE down but they’re crawling right over it. Currently I’m putting orange rind and watermelon rind out there to capture them- throwing the infested fruit into a pond, but how should I actually dispose of them and what else can I do to save my garden?!? I’m desperate before they eat all! Thanks in advance. Cindy. PS I love watching your common sense explanations about all things gardening ❤️

You can throw the dead bugs in the trash. If you collect a lot, put them in a plastic bag, put that in the freezer, and then toss it all away or add to compost when they freeze. That's how the students and I did it at the school garden.

Could you do a video about 'planter wall blocks', into which you can slot 1x10 inch boards for an instant raised bed? I obsessed about building raised beds. I either had to invest in tools or hire a handyman. Then a neighbor showed me hers. I picked up the materials and put together three raised beds in about 15 minutes. I now have a thriving garden. Wish I'd known about them years ago. I found them at Lowe's in the paver department.

@@GardenerScott Yay! One suggestion---make sure the blocks are perfectly level and stable on the ground and the boards are flush in the grooves before adding dirt. Otherwise the blocks will pull away from the boards with the weight of the dirt, and over time. There is also a hole in the middle of the blocks to add rebar for stability. They are much too heavy to adjust once filled with dirt so I will have to make adjustments and add rebar this winter. Loving my garden! Thanks for your super informative videos.
