That'd be because the 4 teams were handpicked. Now with each power conference having a guaranteed spot in the 12 team playoff, no doubt you'll be seeing OK State in it.
Texas Tech grad and fan here, but Frank Eaton is way back in my family tree. Great grandparents fled northeast Oklahoma for West Texas during the Dust Bowl. (My family is pumped for this OSU-TTU rivalry to grow up)
I have been an OSU fan since freshman year there in 1966. I totally agree that Kasey Dunn as OC is a victim of the Peter Principle. Promote someone until they underperform at the higher level. He is a great receivers coach and that is where he belongs. But he was leaving OSU because he wanted to be OC, so they caved in and gave him the job, and we all see the lack of results. If Cowboys are going to win the Big 12, they need a better OC. And we are not sure if Nardo is the right guy for DC. It's too early to tell. He needs time to adjust to Big 12 play.
@stevemehl469 Agreed,but hopefully this will be the last year, and they go after someone like Rashaun Woods if they want a great WR coach,then we can upgrade at OC/QB Coach. I'll be happy either way if they win the BIG12 Title this season along with playoffs
In all fairness, OU was blessed with Jalen Hurts, Kyler Murray, and Baker Mayfield. Gundy, and OSU, faced some great quarterbacks to combat. Still, Big 12 titles were on the table in 2013 and 2021.
Unless you're in the top 25 in recruiting, it doesn't make a lot of difference . Colarado is leading the league in recruiting in both the regular and transfer portals. Does that mean they are going to win the league this year? No, because they don't have continuity. Oklahoma State could win the league this year, but I would bet on Utah because of their good coaching and leadership. The talent level is so close in the big 12 that it comes down to coaching , leadership, and avoiding major injuries.
You guys don't have it right about the mascot history of Pistol Pete. Frank Easton was a real cowboy and a marshall in Payne County where Stillwater is located. Not sure where you got that info that he was from Connecticut.
Not a cowboy fan but Gundy does the best with what he has but he’s nothing to compared any Saban or top coach in the world. His recruiting is way too low and yes sometimes they get a 5 star.
Gundy believes someone who has good "character" and "loves OSU" is more valuable than 5-star talent. He wants people who aren't prima donas, but good locker room teammates.

Mike Gundy does well when Oklahoma State plays average or above average teams, but when they play really good teams, they tend to lose. Gundy is overrated.
Gundy is over 50% in play top 25 teams. Top 10 team in this stats. When you compare talent, he should beat the great teams. 2 and 2 in big 6 bowls. Over 2/3 in all bowls wins.
That's not based on evidence. OSU is one of 10 teams (#5) with a winning record against the top-25 in the last 20 years. You're just regurgitating an unoriginal thought
@sarahmccoy1941 I have no idea what your agenda is. All teams have issues when playing a better team. You go and pick 1 year and say osu lost to so and so. Yea, sure, great. But that works both ways. The problem is we gave you proof. Osu is 5th nationally when playing top 25 teams. This means you're wrong. Not just wrong but completely opposite, gundy is great in playing in big games. Truth hurts, I know. That's why I never say wrong things.
