I did exactly what you did here yesterday when I introduced 2 more to my 3 hens. They had quite a few squabbles but seem a lot better this morning, although the hen that was bottom of the pecking order out of my original 3 is trying to stamp her authority on the new girls. It was a bit of a pain getting the new ones in the coop as they were scared, but they were fine this morning.

back in the day when my grandpa raised chickens and we're talking 30 40 50 years ago he's getting new chickens and just toss them in with the flock made sort it out usually didn't take long. I know I got my girls though a rooster because I had lost several to a hawk since they free range my neighbor had a year old Rhode Island Red rooster and I just tossed him in with the girls. at first several of the ladies actually picked on him after about a week or two though he had them straightened out😮

Thanks Kevin! Yes I'll be putting those videos out soon. I won't have full build instructions or anything but most of the things I built can be built by anybody even with no experience. I use a solar panel, battery, solar controller, timer, and piston arm to control the door. It came in a kit I found on ebay. I'm not sure if the seller still sells it. There are also battery powered ones that lift a string tied to a door up and down. Different ways to do it.

Do you have a rooster or all pullets? I need to introduce 3 lavender orpinton 16 weeks old to a 25 week old black copper maran cockerel, a 25 week old chocolate orpington, and a black copper maran. I tried yesterday but I thought cockerel was going to kill one of the lavender orpington. Is it harder to introduce with a cockerel? Ghey are seperated now.

@garlandthompson5970 6 лет назад
Do you think this would work on very young year and younger chickens?
@NaturesAlwaysRight
@NaturesAlwaysRight 6 лет назад
Great question, I should have touched on that! So for younger chickens there is more risk to disease and more risk to hen pecking. Their immune systems and bodies just can't take as much of a beating. When introducing, young birds I think it is better to have a separate coop or area where you raise them up and get them bigger and stronger, up to 3-4 months. Then introduce them the way I did it, you can even take longer and let them stare at each other for a week before letting them actually come together. It depends on your current flocks temperament too, like are some birds super aggressive and territorial? Some flocks are more welcoming some are not. Think about the numbers big flock vs small flock. IF you have 15 old birds and bring in 2 new ones, they might get beat up worse than if you introduced 5 new ones. They stick together and it kind of spreads out any beatings the old flock lays out haha. The social structure of chickens is pretty brutal hehe.

does anyone know how to introduce an extremely nervous chicken to a flock of three? she was previously badly hurt from constant pecking by other chickens, so we adopted her and she is now healed. we have been trying to introduce her to our chickens, but the problem is she is highly scared whenever another chicken comes near her - they have a huge garden to roam, though she stays away from the other three. I would really appreciate any advice and help!

One question, Can 20 chickens, work, poo, fertilize and weed 1 acre in 5 months, that the soil turn dark and black and healthy composted soil? Or will the weed grow faster than they can eat? Do i need more chickens? Or is there any magic number of how many meter square / square foot maximum each chicken can compost ? Sorry for the long question but, have only one chance and i'm trying to decrease failed farming possibility as much as possible.. hehehe Thankss a bunch!
@NaturesAlwaysRight
@NaturesAlwaysRight 6 лет назад
I think somewhere around 50 is safe if you never move them from that acre. Too many chickens can add too much nitrogen. Here's a good article I found on it and how much manure they will produce for you. I think you have a great idea, they will add a lot of fertility. www.plamondon.com/wp/how-many-chickens-per-acre/

Do you plan on eating these when they are past their prime egg laying? And how long do they produce for? I've heard like two years.
@NaturesAlwaysRight
@NaturesAlwaysRight 6 лет назад
Yes in the end I will be eating them. Heritage breeds can keep laying up to 5 years, I've even heard longer but their produciton really slows down after 2-3 years. At the end of the 2nd year I will assess how much they are laying and make a decision. I may keep them a 3rd year because my birds are so healthy I hope they will stay fairly productive in their 3rd year.

What are you using for anti-hawk? Hawks are sooo bad in the north east that they almost act as ground predators, I just lost my first chicken a couple days ago to a hawk that landed and walked around the entire enclosure until it found this tiny little area it could squeeze itself into, obviously the hawk was trapped in there after killing one of my chickens.... And of course I would never kill a hawk 😒 this is my first year raising chickens they are not even a year old and my barred Rock is now injured on her leg so I have her separated, However her maternal instinct is to jump out of the 4ft by 2ft by 2ft brooder that I have her isolated in, Just so she can lay her eggs somewhere comfortable.... That I worryand don't know if it's better to keep her with the rest of the chickens that are going to pick on her or keep her aside, and then slowly reintroduce her
@TheFifthWallz
@TheFifthWallz 4 года назад
Also she was the runt of the flock and we had issues of her not surviving however nowadays although she is not the biggest chickenshe's the most food aggressive and never Peck's any other chickens and no other chickens peck her so I have no idea what status that makes her
@NaturesAlwaysRight
@NaturesAlwaysRight 4 года назад
If it's that bad I would put up bird netting over the top of the run area or exclude completely like my chicken run. That or a guard dog or goose is another option.
