Only one correction Cody, The Genesis is a production knife, I designed it and do some of the work but a majority is contracted out. Just want to be clear as to not misrepresent my custom work with production. Thank You and I think you will find after getting use to a neck knife you will feel naked without it!

I won't lie, my only concern with neck knives is having 550 paracord around my neck, particularly when climbing a tree.... I'd have to make one redesign - some sort of breakaway clasp that would keep me from strangling myself if I fell while wearing it and it hooked up on something. Aside from that, I love the design. That Carpenters CTS-HXP Alloy steel is a very interesting steel.

Ready Forums mcbbushcraft had the idea of attaching it together with a leather strap so under pressure it would stretch and pull through the leather hole. It's how mines attached though i'm not going to test it on purpose:)

I hate to be critical here, but using 550 cord to carry something around your neck is dangerous. It is so strong that if it ever got caught in anything while working it would not break away and could strangle you. I would suggest using a ballchain to wear it with, or securing the 550 cord with a sliding cordlock rather than a knot.
@MTknives
@MTknives 9 лет назад
You are correct, I had actually emailed Cody yesterday and suggested some sort of breakaway attachment. I thought about using shrink tubing it would make it adjustable and breakaway as well.

@krenov72

But you have a knife to cut yourself free.... I had that same concern when I first got mine.... I also was worried that a break away system would break away and leave me knife less....,just keep it tucked in a shirt.... Shirtless carry WOULD be very hazordous... As it hangs down when you bend over.... 4 years daily(23.75/7... Take it off in the shower) carry... Still breathing.

I use a leather boot lace with twin slip knots. It gets better looking with age. I don't think it would strangle me either.

You will wear it year round.... summer too... you will fill like you left your wallet if you don't wear it one day... it's the first thing i put on after I put my shirt on in the morning... I have two of Patrick's custom neck knives and you won't be let down. As a bonus, you get any knife from him Beyond Razor Sharp - If you ever make an investment with Patrick and take ownership of one of his knives... go ahead and splash out and get his DVD on how to sharpen a knife (or anything with an edge) It will complete your need for a cutting tool...

Personally Im just not into the whole neck knife thing. I wear a lanyard around my kneck with my ID badge for work and that bothers me. So I know a neck knife would too. That said, I can certainly see the benefits in it. Like stated, any time getting to ones pockets, or being in a contorted position, it would be very handy.

Those are some sweet knives for sure... My only problem is that I too have lost my share of knives and refuse to carry anything over $50- into the field. I can't enjoy a really expensive knife, but that's just me. I also find that neck-knives are like Fanny-packs, both are useful but you either love them or hate them.

I've been wearing neck knives for years and always on the hunt for a perfect one that's not bulky or obvious under my shirt. I've tried $400 Murray Carters to my current $25 CRKT Minimalist and think it's about as ideal as it can get. Every man should have and carry a knife (any kind) and a man who does not have one is no real man in my book. I would be ashamed to have to ask someone else for a cutting tool.

I question the Ergos of that neck knife... I usually dislike pronounced finger grooves on knives because they don't always line up properly with the user's fingers (everyone's got different sized hands) and what inevitably winds up happening is one of the user's fingers sits right atop one of the humps on the finger groove and it's very uncomfortable... I would be worried about purchasing this knife considering it's price is basically higher than any other skeleton neck knife on the market currently and in the event I find the knife grip is not comfortable, I would feel bad returning it. Patrick is such a nice guy too, I would really feel bad returning this knife simply because the grip design is not comfortable in the hand. =(. I think I'll just stick with my ESEE Izula. It's got a very neutral grip and is made from excellent 1095 steel and only about $45....
@MTknives

+Dan Schwemin Jr If you ever change your mind I would have no problem refunding you if you didn't like the way that it felt. That is one downfall for online sales is you can't handle the knives first. I ordered a knife one time only to find it much larger and bulky once I received it. I also have the Genesis II now that is only $99. If you do order don't forget to use the code: Wranglerstar for a 10% discount ;) have a great day! -Patrick

"Neck Knives" are relatively new and faddish in the U.S. mainly because we are not a blade nation per say. The neck knives though has been around for generations in many 3rd world countries where firearms are not as prevalent or acquirable. In countries with the knife culture they carry several knives. Most Americans carry "A" knife as a utility but rarely for primary defense or offense. The "blade" man in many countries will have several secreted around on his body and especially in hot regions where loose fitting clothing is worn the neck knife is endeared. I saw many of them while in the Philippines. These guys would stand wearing shorts and a loose short sleeve button shirt and in a flash have a knife in each hand and on you before you could draw a pistol from the holster.....they are fast and good. They can cut you and be walking away before you realize your injured......

I have been wearing a cart dolts minimalist for 4 years..even while sleeping hahA.. Take it off to shower. My wife would laugh at me when we first met, but soon was often saying" neck knife me!" As she needed to cut something. I am a cabinet maker, and use it daily , if nothing else, to sharpen a pencil. Cutting string, strapping, tape on boxes.... Used daily for years..... Forget it's there.... Just remember to take it off if you're gojng accross a border or flying haha.

I only bought the minimalist because it was there that day haha. I had seen it in a magazine and thought it was dog ugly, as I prefer wood scales over tacticool... This is a beater knife, it shaves paper most of the time, but I use it a lot , so it's always sharp , just not always razor so, will look into the XHP... Thanks for the heads up

I personally dont like neck knives for three reasons. One is having the weight hanging on my neck. The other is it swinging around or getting in my way which leads to my last reason and that is the hazzard of it getting hung up and causing injury. Say for instance you fell off the tree house and got hung by the neck knife. If kept under the shirt it shouldnt be a safety hazzard though.
@TheJakeRobinson
@TheJakeRobinson 9 лет назад
I used to think the same thing... I always wear a t-shirt under whatever shirt I am wearing and I wear my neck knife against my skin. Never even know it's there... weight is not an issue. Once you start wearing it becomes "a part of you" and you actually feel "naked" if you forget to put it on... and you'll remember just when you needed to use it and say, "crap, I forget my neck knife". Because it is under my shirt there is now swinging around... but occasionally when I am working on a project around the house and know I'll be using it frequently I wear it on the outside but I've never had an occasion where I was conscious of it swinging around. I actually have two keys hanging off the end of mine that I need every now and then and they don't bother me either. As far as the safety issue, I would be more concerned that one of Patrick's beyond razor sharp knives would slip out and I'd field dress myself driving down the road or something... Kydex properly applied doesn't have this problem. You will know when it's time to get another sheath, but like Patrick mentioned in a comment he's carrying same sheath for 2+ years and I bet he uses his much more than I use mine ;>) I am now a bit aware of incorporating a break-away option as some have pointed out a danger in paracord suicide...

I love that neck-knife, real nice shape.. It looks slimmer and lighter than mine, being a small woman both are important to me.. I forage a lot and it comes in handy when I have only one hand free.. I use mine for prying mushrooms loose,digging wild onions, cutting leaves from their stems and a host of other things.. When I find something I can't identify, I photograph it with my knife beside it , as a gauge.. I find a belt knife is often overkill and a neck-knife is just right..

The negative of neck knives has all ways been, you can hang your self, or some attacker can use it to strangle you or break your neck. This can be true. Use a breakaway cord of some type for those events. Otherwise a neck knife is very handy. Very simple!

Nice. My favorite neck knife is a knife by CRKT Sweet K.i.s.s., designed by Ed Halligan. As you I never believed I would carry one until I got my hands on this one. Small/slim, robust (full tang), perfect for when sitting down in camp and the hip knife is hard to reach, or in the winter when your hip knife is buried under layers of clothing. Since is so slim/small - also prefect as a EDC, also in a urban environment. No, I have no strings to CRKT or the designer, I just like it and since it "converted me"....

Say Heah Cody, Believe or not my Top's Mini Scandi 2.5 and my Johnson Adventure Potbelly make a very functional combo. Although I use my Potbelly as a One Tool Option, But sometimes the Mini Scandi 2.5 comes in very handy. To me the two go together like soup and Sandwich. peanut butter and jelly.
@냄새꾸리꾸리한발까락
TOPS mini-Skandi Survival is my favorite neck knife. I wear it everday. The stainless ball chain irritated the back of my neck (during Summer or when I sweat), but I replaced it with 550 paracord and fixed the issue. The blade steel is 1095... which is prone to rust issues compared to some of other steels, but its excellent edge retention, ease of sharpening along with other factors makes it a very awsome edc knife (and for woodwork). The handle is very comfortable, even during long duration of use. As long as you take the time to maintain the blade (such as applying rust prevention solution, after the blade gets wet), it will/has served me quite well, and will last. If you haven't had the chance to check one out, do so. If you can handle one and get a feel for it, you will know what I mean.

I didn't realize a taper tang was that hard to make, a freind//patient, sold me a knife, I used it as a bushcraft knife, he made it out of a saw blade, it looks between a Buck 113 Skinner and the a Gen 5 but it's about a 1/4" with gimping that looks like tiny gear straightened out and goes down the spine, then the edge goes to a zero grind but it's a hollow modified grind blade that towards the edge it's almost a flat zero grind, hard to explain, anyhow it's my G.E.K. Not to take away from the knifesmith but the sheath knife with the tapered tang is a very common and old stock removal pattern. Its pretty much the first knife pattern most knifesmiths make for the last 14 years at least. It is a textbook representation of Robert Loveless's 4 inch dropped hunter. It is also the very first stock removal knife in the book how to make knives by Richard w. Barney and Robert w. Loveless. The hardest part of the pattern is the hollow grind. But with the belt grinder i am sure was used its not hard. Now show me someone making it with a 1/8 drill bit, a half inch cold chisel, a1 pound hammer, a power drill, with 1.5"sanding drumb, 6"vice, one each of a dubble cut and single cut half round or flat files, a rat tail file, a half inch square file, a marker or layout dye, a scribe and a set of dividers and 6-inch calipers, a hacksaw, a coping saw with wood and metal blades, a wood fuel fire with ash pit for annealing, hardening and tempering, water, oil or brine for quenching. Then to polish it only a stack of wetdry paper from 180 220 320 500 800 1000 1500 2000 five sheets each and a cotton buffing weel on the drill with jeweler's rouge. Then i will be impressed other than that it's just another run of the mill hand produced Loveless patterned knife. It's probably just 2 by 72 envy its a good looking knife but knowing if i made one with the tools i have at my disposal i could duplicate it perfectly but the amount of time I'd have to spend in it would make it cost prohibitive. As far as the neck knife goes I don't like skeletonized knives they look like pressed steel scrap that somebody put an edge on. But to solve your problem with hanging yourself just tighten the loop make it tight enough that it can't loop over something if you fall. I wear a little push dagger as a neck knife every now and then but I keep it about a half inch under my trachea and on leather with just a pair of overhand knots adjusted about 10 inches apart so that they can tighten or lengthen. I really don't understand the argument for only wearing a neck knife during winter I live in Arizona I wear it year round. So please somebody explain that one to me? The main reason I wear a neck knife is because of gloves. It saves me the time of having to remove my gloves to grab for my pocket clipped knife. Its grate for when you are crawling in to tight spaces or dont have pockets on at the moment. Also it's easily accessible by both hands if one hands holding you up or holding you on to something you can grab your knife with either hand and use it. But to each his own.

I've never worn a neck knife, but have never discounted it either. I personally carry as an EDC a Cold Steel Ti-Lite or a CRKT Big Dog Tanto. On duty, I carry a boot knife, but a neck knife may be in store for me now, just to try it. My knife drawer may have to grow.

Looking at your tree house construction under those knives... I see you are using what appears to be deck screws.. marginally better than standard Philips, but in my opinion in the same class as those hateful Fiskars axes. :) If you have a bunch of them, well then of course use them, but when you replace them... consider moving to the Torx pattern... you will likely find it better, especially when you go to take it apart in 5 or 10 years. Yes I know they warrant that you can you remove deck screws for 20 years or so. I spent last weekend trying to take some out that I put down only maybe 5 years ago, about 25% of them came out via a saw blade. I have found the Torx to be somewhat better.

Not a fan of neck knives, ...as a suggestion ...find a good Victorinox champion, put a 550 cord teather on and drop it in your pocket. Carry one 24/7 since late 70's or early 80's, razor sharp and utilitarian for all tasks encountered in work or play.... Never lost, never failed me....yet.

The folding knife is the Svord Peasant knife. They're popular with those of us who like to finish or customize our knives ourselves. I bought two on Amazon. They are hideous out of the box, but with a little work, you can make it your own. My thinking is that for a $17 high-carbon blade that is batonable, folds and fits in my pocket, I couldn't really go wrong. I really like the fact it's so easy to take apart, which makes cleaning that much easier. I also put a loop of paracord through the hole in the tail with a knot at the end and leave the knot sticking out from my pocket for easy deployability. The loop can also serve as a lock if you twist and loop it around the handle and tail when the knife is open. This make-shift lock isn't necessary; you can just hold the tail against the handle with your palm while using the knife as usual with confidence it won't fold on your fingers. I'm no salesman, but I do like that cheap knife enough to give my humble opinion on it. I thoroughly enjoy my first one. I haven't gotten around to finishing the second yet.

Two things I wanna mention. First, that MT Knife is an awesome looking blade. That said, a buddy and I were talking the other day and we both had decided separately that we probably wouldn't be purchasing any of those really cool and nice looking expensive knives like that. Simply because, to us and probably a lot of folks, you spend that kind of money on something and your first instinct would be to not get it dirty. But, a knife is meant to be used right? So, the expensive knife would take up funds and space in the safe and very seldom ever be brought out into the light of day. So, decent priced as well as good to use and abuse knives are the way we decided we would go. Second thing, about the neck knife. I like them. I like the basic premise of them. They are backup knives put in a place where most people don't check. With that said, try leaning your upper body against something and then, while still leaning against that something, lean your upper torso backwards. That neck knife will pop right out of the sheath if you aren't very careful. And, if you don't realize it now you have a sharp pointy object loose under your shirt next to your unprotected chest and belly. It's really not that hard to do and not realize that it was done. So, just be careful and cognizant of that possibility. Stay safe. Loved that last Benchmade video. Part of the reason why we don't want to buy any more safe queens.

+Wysiwyg101 You make a good point, my knives are pretty secure because of that. I was a lineman and one day I was kicking something around in the bottom of the bucket( a bucket truck, the bucket is what we stand in when we go up on a pole to work) I looked down and it was my knife. I guess leaning over the edge to work it had came out and fortunately cut itself free :D I didn't get cut but my shirt did. After that I made a new sheath, the old one had gotten too worn out. Also I use all my knives even the expensive ones, because I feel the same way. I buy them to use them and I hope others do as well.

Your friend MT reinvented the wheel. That’s a famous drop point classic hunter design of Great Bob Loveless, and many knife makers including BRKT are copying his designs. Even you can find it in blank knife kit for beginners.

While hiking, I always carry a neck knife for emergency reasons. While at cadets, our first annual two week camp, a bit inexperienced, not really knowing what to do, we was with an older boy who had a neck knife while my friend had a knife on his belt while I had mine in my pack. While hiking with a fair amount of equipment, which included, Webbing, half packs, my friend had an additional pouch and we all had 303 Lee Enfield rifles. While traversing a steepish ravine, my friend slipped and managed to get his pack and rifle straps tangled on a wooden fence at the bottom, he had 6 straps pulling his arms up because of his body weight and his rifle sling was choking him, it literally was choking him to death, He couldn't get his arm down to get his knife, mine was in my pack. The experience kid with the neck knife cut away the rifle strap in a few seconds possibly saving his life. If he had a neck knife, it would have been accessible, even in the tangled mess he was in. The same camp the following year, we all had neck knives. They are just super handy in an emergency. After that scare, I always have a neck knife, I currently use a Boker Plus. So please, invest in a neck knife.

I've been wearing an inexpensive Boker Gnome for a couple of years now. I think I've used it twice. It's more of a backup plan than anything, but I still put it on every single day. I used a leather boot lace with the twin slip knots for adjustability. The leather gets better looking with the years, and the micarta has gotten darker and nicer looking as well.

Cody I tend to do the exact opposite of what your saying with my knives. During the winter I carry a fixed blade on my hip. The warmer it gets, the less rigid my clothes are. Its hard to wear a good knife on lightweight clothing. I love to carry my neck knives during the summer more than winter.

You lost 7 Benchmades? Really? Id be so pissed Id be sick. No way man. BTW use a light leather thong for the neck knife. Paracord will chafe your neck and could hang you if you get caught. The leather is soft and will snap if you yank it hard.

Cody, I think your amazing! Could you put a steal plate on both sides of this joint, before you start the build? I am worried about the sway. I do not want to see Jack or one of his friends hurt. You could use a couple of plates and some angle iron on this joint. I maybe missing something in this vid. Earlier in a vid, you were going to chain it to the tree. Please make sure your foundation is strong before you build the rest of the tree house. This is a lot of weight.

I've been wearing a CRKT Crawford Falcon for years, as a neck knife. It's accessible with both hands. It's light weight. Very handy for utility and for small kitchen chores. I have it hanging with Paracord. I threaded the ends of the cord through the holes in the sheath and melted them. While the ends were still hot I flattened them to keep from pulling back through the holes. It will break under heavy pressure but not from pulling out the knife. I've tested it. It works. I hate head chains because they pull on the hair on my chest.

I have that Svord "peasant knife. It is very good steel, but in my opinion, it is NOT a good EDC knife. It is very, very dangerous design. I like the knife. It is a ancient design used by peasants dating back to Roman times, and it is a very novel design. But it is just plain dangerous.

losing knives and potential conflicts with gangbangers is why I bought 200 knives for cheap. If I need to stick em deep and go I am not out anything big. Plus if you use it for self defense the police will take it anyway. A good knife should be kept in the home. Cheap knives for everything else because I can put a quick edge on them and in everyday use their is little difference.

I carry a neck knife during the fall and winter months as well, I usually just carry a Mora but I am interested in this knife. The reason I carry mine is because on the farm I have a problem with my knives freezing into the sheaths so i carry the neck knife as my backup. I love all your videos, Thanks, keep up the good work and God Bless

I just started making knives a few months ago, I started of making folders (bad idea) and only made a couple and weren't very good haha but I've made a few fixed blades that my friends all seemed to like a lot. But I'd love to make you one and mail it to ya sometime as a gift Mr.Wranglerstar. It will just be a little while because I'm using a steel that has already been heat treated and I cold/wet grind them but I'm running out of ways to cut the steel haha its almost impossible. Take care Cody

Friendly neighborhood safety sally here, if you fall with paracord around your neck like from the treehouse and it catches you will snap your neck basically hanging yourself, i get the gas cans being stupid because you have to fight with it to get it to work but would a section of twine tied in the back to break away be too much? Just saying because I care about you and would hate for you to have that happen, very unlikely but just in case. Thanks for the great videos and keep em coming!

The knives are fine. It's the method of retention that is lacking. If a heavy nick knife slides out of your pocket almost every time you lay on your back to work under a car, it needs better retention. If pocket clip catches on brush, and a knife is pulled out, it's retention is too poor. I wear overalls a lot, so belt sheaths don't work. Hmmm, I wonder if there's a market if I were to invent a solution? I don't like hanging something from my neck, but I get the appeal of having a fixed blade in a handy spot.

I agree. I dumped my "tactical folder" for a fixed blade. For me, it is more of a weapon but the idea is the same; fixed blades are much easier to access and less risk of loosing them. I use my multitool in a customer kydex holster that I made, as my primary utility blade. If I need anything more than that, then I have another fixed blade on my belt. I've been running like that for over a year now and feel that it will stay that way.

Thanks W! Neck knives I seem to remember go back to the trappers. If I remember history, it is because of being mauled by bears and ambushes at night when a lone man is without almost everything to survive. I use a small one while hiking and even sleep with it in the woods. Cheers!

neck knives rule.....I wear a neck knife full time. It has replaced my habit of carrying a pocket knife...mine is dagger style with both blade sides sharpened...why?...because i use it so much having two sharp edges ensures a whole day with a handy sharp knife in the city or in the woods or up a ladder etc etc etc...also at days end, a few stokes on a stone and its ready to rock again...small blade sharpens so fast it only takes 2 minutes tops to sharpen both sides....cheers.

Great in the cold with gloves---- small enough it does not bother you so you keep it with you and it becomes habit-- I know personally a friend who fell with one out of a tree stand. It caught a limb and became near tragic event other than he sucks at knots! Hahahaha!
@williamsmith5541
@williamsmith5541 9 лет назад
Nothing safe about having something that can be entangled in a power take off or snagged on a limb when off the ground. And if you wear a seat belt, having a blade that sharp near your carotid artery or chest during a crash would present another unnecessary risk. I believe your first assumptions had some merit.
