I ve been asking this in recent years. I think we need our jazz leaders to carry this forward. My band just doesn’t buy it yet.

Awesome video! My Favourite Things was more or less my introduction to the jazz world, so it's got a special place in my heart. Loved the breakdown of Say It Somehow, even without being familiar with the song.

Wonderful Video! Thank you for doing this topic. “The Light in the Piazza" is probably my favorite musical score in this century, such emotional, warm, sensual music writing. In terms of other musical theater composers, there has to be some jazz moments in Sondheim shows. Also I wonder what do you think of Michael John LaChiusa's scores? He did write a "jazz" musical called "The Wild Party".

Oscar Peterson’s West Side Story is an amazing example of a reimagined set of show tunes by a jazz genius.

You made my musical theatre heart just burst watching this! I love seeing interviews with composers and that video that you pulled from with Sondheim and Guettel is a recent find of mine, and as soon as Sondheim was listing his favorites, I immediately made a Spotify playlist to sit and listen! My favorite songs from this score are probably Say It Somehow, The Light in the Piazza, and The Beauty Is! I could talk forever about all the amazing things he does in the song “Light in the Piazza” but one of my favorites is the extending of the resolution at the end of the song, which reminds me heavily of the end of “At the Ballet” with the bVI, bVII, I progression where the bVII is held out longer than you’d expect to create that tension and finally resolves up to the I

Off-topic, but that's the most badass count in I've ever seen: stare into the middle distance, then stamp your dress shoe on the wooden stage twice

Also, he’s kind of... growling the subdivisions quietly! I have a feeling that the band isn’t very happy in the clip: you can see all of the exhalations (plus Trane’s soprano is extremely flat), which leads me to believe it’s extremely cold wherever they are playing. Maybe that accounts for the stomping/growling??
