As an Osaka person, Osaka is quite different from Tokyo. Osaka is an old civilian city with 1700 years of history. The Buddhist civilization from the continent built Osaka while Samurai warriors in the medieval war period built Tokyo, Tokyo is an arrogant feudal authoritarian Samurai civilization. Therefore the mindset of genuine Osakans is subconsciously a Buddhist civilian mindset while those in Tokyo are often Samurai mindset. If you do a terrible thing in your life you go to hell after you died...Osakans inherited this kind of Buddhist subconscious, also people in Kyoto and Nara are deeply infected with the behaviours of Buddhism even today. That's why they try to behave faithful, nice, kind and friendly. Osakans tend to think behaving like Tokyo, cold sometimes cruel Samurai-minded behaviour is a sin. In reality, Buddhists, Honganji in Osaka revolted against the arrogant authoritarian rule by brutal Samurai of eastern Japan in medieval, this mindset of Osakans is still causing the hatred toward inhumane Samurai behaviour of Tokyo today. Tokyo is too nationalistic and racist. The Buddhist civilization of Osaka-Kyoto-Nara is also profoundly related to Asia and even the middle eastern and Greek civilizations. And Osaka-Kyoto-Nara has the diversity since ancient. Approximately 25% of people are continental ancestors, mostly from the Korean peninsula but generally, Osakans are tolerant of foreigners. Osaka has a culture to welcome foreigners since it originally welcomed Asians settling from the continent in ancient. Homogeneous and nationalistic and disciplined Tokyo often looks just like totalitarians to Osakans and is utterly a strange world for Osakans.

I’ve lived in a few areas of Japan, and my take is that at least compared to people living in the Tokyo area, Osaka people are less ‘emotionally guarded’. It might translate to friendly…or maybe aggressive, depending on the situation. 😆 From my experience, people in Shizuoka are the friendliest. When I lived there, I was really impressed by how open people were. They just seemed to sincerely enjoy social interaction.

I’m a South Asian living in Tokyo. I’m brown. I find it that Japanese people from other parts of Japan like Osaka, Fukuoka are more friendlier and warmer than Japanese people in Tokyo. My friend from Fukuoka actually hugs me when greets me. While my tokyo friend seems kindda cold when greeting. But he’s okay though. I went to Osaka once. I heard all the rumors about Osaka people being friendly. But I always thought it was just a stereotype. That day, 2 strangers approached me and my girlfriend. I know it does not sound like much, but in Tokyo you would be lucky for a stranger who is not selling something to approach you in 5-10 years of living in the city. In a single day in Osaka, it happened twice.

I was in Osaka for the first time last week, very interesting place. things feel natural there, rather than business oriented. Less "Point A to point B" but relaxed. No one's in a rush to catch the train. More facial expressions too even though nearly everyone had a mask on you can get the sense people had smiles on their face in conversations (just my experience/opinion) Actually going back next month too!

Women in Osaka particularly older ones can come off rude, but maybe only to other Japanese folks. For example...If you eat at an okonomiyaki restaurant in Osaka run by older women, don't be surprised if they start criticizing you on how you hold your chopsticks or why you ordered the okonomiyaki the way you did. I'm speaking from experience. Lol. My opinion is the people are friendly there because Osaka was the major trade hub in Japan many centuries ago, so many have that "friendly salesman" way of communicating.
@Tonytayloring

Rude is not the word. They're just being straight & real given their age, just like a nagging grandma, at the end of the day they wouldn't come off as being as critical and judgemental like people from Tokyo (where you make a mistake and they'll just whisper among themselves, leaving you alone and making you a clown for it)

I mostly disagree as an American in Yokohama. Its true more opportunities are in Tokyo for everyone. I used to live in Kobe before moving to Yokohama for work in Tokyo. Kansai people will only be friendly to foreigners if they can speak Japanese. Otherwise, it’s just the awkward, first meeting exchange and both sides will forget each other the next minute. Osaka is a big city with small town feel. Many Kansai-jin have lived in Kansai their whole life. Tokyo area is much better for foreigners like myself and easier to find English friendly services such as medical when our Japanese is limited. Also, I found people in Tokyo more cultured (international living experience), outgoing, and easier to talk to than in Kansai. I’m from LA and being in Tokyo is similar in many ways so I could adjust to big international city life quickly. I understand many Tokyoites aren’t from Tokyo, same as LA. Overall, I recommend Kansai to other fellow foreigners only if they can speak good Japanese.

I've lived in both. When I speak Japanese in tokyo as a westerner almost everyone speaks back in Japanese. In osaka a noticeable amount of people force English and even say "it's OK I speak english" without knowing if I'm from an English speaking country. It always felt like saying I should speak Japanese because my foreign brain can't handle it and therefore shouldn't be allowed to practice. But my Japanese has become much better in tokyo (because tokyo people talk to me). I'm keen to see if osaka people will treat me like I actually live in japan this time. Osaka city is way more livable than Tokyo city. And tokyo people are more synthetic on average. My Japanese wife (from Nagano) and I are thinking of moving back to Osaka because we had a baby. Tokyo is not a happy place to raise a child. no space to play and everyone seems afraid of each other. (Maybe that's just Setagaya🤔)

Now granted not all places are like what I described in the post. Life is relative, it’s conditional, and it’s subjective to circumstances and changes both within us and around us. Not every person from Kobe is apart of the Yamaguchi Gumi crime syndicate. Not every person in Nagoya owns a car etc. However, there are just elements within those places that indicate a certain motif, theme, and sentiment about places that evidently gives each city a very distinct reputation around the world.

Those kids were so lucky to learn in such a young age because it was way more easier to learn when you were still a kid. I started to learn English quite late during my high school days. During that time, nobody was helping me. I have no phones, no computer to help me learn on google or RU-vid or anything. So I worked hard by hearing english songs, I watched english series on tv, and of course reading english books. And you know what's funny, my first english series that I watched was law and order. At first I always need subtitles when i watched the series. But then when I improved, I don't even need subtitle anymore. I can just understand everything they talked about in English.
