Are playgrounds too safe? Introducing loose parts play

This is what happens when you let kids run wild...
It looks like a recipe for broken bones. But in Europe and New Zealand where schools have adopted loose parts play it’s claimed the kids become more attentive, sociable, even more punctual. And injuries are rare.

Seeing that kid slide on a garbage lid was really beautiful I can't say why it just captured what it meant to be a kid.

Some do. I my ECE class in the US were were taught that some risk is need. As the current “safer” playgrounds might actually be more dangerous. As kids will use the playground in correctly. Adventure playgrounds in the US as well understand this, though there are not many of them. I think the other difference is that Australians don’t sue as much. I also think but need to double check that Australian government pays for school injuries.

At my elementary school they didn't even let up play tag or infection on the play ground, we did it anyway, but still.

Me as a 12 years old right now this sounds fun because theres alot of tools btw i love tools went i was a child i always just play with them but my grandfather always use it for work men ilove it if we have this

I think risky playgrounds are more stimulating to a child's brain. If they fall and get hurt, they learn from it, which is an important part of life to learn. If they don't get hurt, they still use creativity and concur simple fears like heights or getting some bumps and bruises. Memories are also stronger when children have more freedom of their surroundings, the more natural it looks, the better. Making everything safe is less stimulating to the brain and even though parents will worry less about their child getting hurt in these cushiony, risk free parks, the kids aren't learning anything. They can't dig up the ground to find bugs because of fake synthetic grounds, they can't test the limits of their courage far enough, they can't get dirty with sand. It'll be a matter of time before cities just end up removing parks all together. I encourage parent's to let their kids get dirty, let them explore nature, and with your supervision, let them see how high they can climb that tree.

I think loose parts play should be combined with amplified versions of existing playgrounds. The amplification would give children taller slides and tougher obstacle courses.

I drastically agree. I feel that giving kids a bare minimum place like say for example the base of a structure to build upon will greatly increase creativity. They will adapt to other scenarios or backdrops. Back then we all started learning to build structures as a group, with primitive materials and methods, so I find this as a great way to learn. We all started at the bottom so why not start that progression again? Using this technique of playful learning abilities will greatly enhance the coping skills of children by letting them learn with others their age or by them selves, so when they are fit for absolutely any situation that requires these skills. We need to roll with the children's punches not the teachers. I feel that we need an upgrade from how we learn, we are manufacturing self driving cars but we haven't really changed the way we learn from or even the way we physically learn. Children are stuck in great place to learn but the technique is wrong! The children are sitting with many other brains in the room but they only focus on two things, the work and the teacher. The children are bored in a plain room with no main deciding factor to choose between one another, if we let the children learn with multiple people in completely different situations without the hard stress taking on the unfortunate, the future livelihoods of human civilization will benefit greatly.

I think millennials ruined it. Before millennials came in and ruined everything (born 1980 to 1994) playgrounds were much more dangerous but more fun.

@@sleepysheepyimpossible8277 everything that we see in our life has been modernized too a certain extent were we now do not have fear of our surroundings. It was a good advancement, but I do not think it helps in the long term. So that leads me to agree with your opinion, I think millennials have ruined many things that end up improving safety but takes away liberty, general happiness, and so on. Although don't think that millennials ruined everything, older people that surpass the maximum age limit of millennials have also made the quality of life worse in some cases.

They should build more of these playgrounds. I remember in daycare that I went to with a friend and we were almost 2 times older then every other kid and we got very board with the toddler play equipment and some younger kids did too. I remember my friend built a functional crossbow with a range of over 20 feet and shot someone in the forehead because there was nothing to do. I also remember fencing with sticks and a lot of younger kids injuring themselves by throwing rocks and swinging huge traffic cones. Kids want to take risks but when there are none, they make their own.

I love this so much. One problem is that the adults are concerned about the liability of not making everything sterile and safe, and the kids are not used to working things out between themselves, so they tattle to adults and it repeats the cycle of going sterile again.

even if they do get quite badly hurt its still worth it for their mental health to let them take risks and have fun and theyll learn from getting badly hurt to not do whatever hurt them

this is how i played when i was their age...this is normal in some countries i think especially in third world countries. first world countries' youth have to pay the price for having all these technologies (that can be helpful, but turns out catastrophic due to lack of guidance). it's sad to see children in my place transitioning to screen addiction today...
