Please do “assisted living homes”. I know it’s a weird one but hear me out. I recently visited my great grandmother who lives in one and I was amazed at all the amenities. They literally don’t have to leave. Medical center, gym, bank, market, restaurants, pre-furnished rooms. And all the things that come with those, food for hundreds of people, medication and life saving medical devices are the biggest two. It also had a basic fence and security system, a spike strip on one of the entrances, and a traffic bar on the other (not that it’ll do much). Plus I think it’ll pass the hot spot bracket.

if your fathers ALH has that he is VERY lucky. I've worked at several and most do have kitchens, rooms and dining areas i have worked at a few that have little else. Just a glorified house. Some I worked at didn't even really have security other than a camera to make sure someone didn't wander outside.

It would still be interesting to see him analyze one. My grandmother lives in one that is like an apartment complex. Not much by way of security besides a key coded lock on the entrance. But there is LOTS of land to farm and a plethora of medications in the rooms from the inhabitants. Hers is only 3 floors, so you may have to clear out any zombies, but I think it would be worth the work.

A good idea would be motels or as you said, retirement homes. A shooting range can be good as well but its too outdoors except for some. If its just you, i think a hotel room would do just the trick.

One con that you missed is the lack of fertile soil - gonna be hard to live for a prolonged period of time, as canned and dry foods will eventually run out and due to the location of Police Stations, looting for more is more challenging as well. It's a good loot or short term location, but for the long run, very challenging.
@Ensensu2

That might depend more on where you can put a farm. If you can compost the waste scraps from the food you eat and the plant matter and/or around the place in one bin, and the solid feces that you produce in another compost bin or pile, you can go a long way to fertilizing a gardening project. Ideally, I'd put plants under a skylight if there is one at the specific police station I've found, since the plants would be sheltered from the harsher elements while still getting somewhat adequate light, and, if not, set up a reflector of some sort around said skylight to catch more light at more angles.

One idea that popped into my mind when it comes to surviving a Zombie Apocalypse would be an offshore Oil platform. Let me explain with some pros that I think are useful: 1. Security, like a boat an Oil rig has the water as a means of keeping enemies out. But not just that the actual facility is generally suspended a decent way about the water which should make it even harder to attack. 2. Food and Water, like a boat they have the ocean for fish and facilities to turn ocean water into drinking water. As such all you really need to set up are some hydrophonic facilities to grow crops. 3. Shelter, Oil rigs are designed for people to live on them for months on end. As such they have fully equipped living facilities that you can use. Not to mention mess halls, bathrooms and a on site medical facility. 4. Maintenance, this is a big one and one reason why I consider this basically a super boat. Oil Rigs are designed to be durable and survive out at sea basically indefinitely. Sure there is going to be inevitable maintenance but for most you don't have to worry about the entire thing just sinking all of a sudden. 5. Fuel, this is the biggest advantage I see. Provided that you have the people with the skills to operate the machinery then you have next to no chance of running out of fuel. As modern oil platforms have facilities not just for extracting and storing oil, but also for refining it. So if you know what you are doing you basically have a nigh limitless source of fuel, not to mention whatever was still in the tanks when you got there. With this you can even make using the on board generators viable. Now that isn't to say that there are some cons, mainly that this kind of set up would inevitably be rather far from the mainland as Oil Rigs don't tend to be all that close to shore. As such any scavenging run will inevitably require you spending time and fuel to take whatever boat that you used to get to the Oil Rig back to shore to grab some stuff.

Here’s an idea stolen from my favorite post apocalyptic series “survivors” of the BBC both the old 70’s and the recent one. A small group gets to a supermarket but the man with a plan doesn’t loot it, he goes straight to the office and digs into the paperwork to find the warehouse that provides for the supermarket. Then they go there it’s loaded with supplies, light passive security to get in and unknown to the public so no hot spot. This is a great series filled with useable ideas unlike the American flix where bullets and fuel grow on trees. In survivor surviving is hard uncertain, growing food even for a small group is horribly difficult and uncertain. The general theme is that the heroes are highly competent and yet faith strikes over and over again unlike shows like Fear of TWD where heroes are stupid but saved by the super power of the scenario. Available on RU-vid.
@BloodMoneyy
@BloodMoneyy 4 года назад
Can you link the the series RU-vid videos?
@cgourin
@cgourin 4 года назад
akwavy x hello, ok many things it doesn’t work well to insert links in RU-vid comments. If you search “BBC Survivors 1975” you will find a playlist with the videos in a fairly bad quality, not that it was so good to begin with. I’m not sure if there’s all 3 seasons but at least you will know if you want to see more with the first episodes. It starts asking the right questions about surviving without society the answer will come through out the 3 seasons that make sens in it’s progress. It can be simplified in this way. The first is a prehistoric era with scavenging, the second is the agricultural revolution, the third is an industrial revolution (energy, transport, money). Don’t expect packed with action but still i love it. The 2008 series is not available but you can see the trailer searching “Survivors Season 1 preview”. It’s obviously more modern with good characters and it also, it failed, you have a normal first season and a fast closing second one that still ends on a cliff hanger but this series is likely to never be finished.

In a police station there is a 'sally port'. A double garage sized space that can be isolated and secured from the inside and outside. You could allow small groups of Zed's in to kill them with out the fear of being over run but also to load up your transportation well still in a secure area. Safe transition space are important.

Spoiler alert. They are terrible places to stay in during a zombie apocalypse. While they would be decent for short term, they would be easy targets for hostile groups of humans. There also isn't a lot of security that wouldn't be knocked down by a modest sized horde. Another issue is size, they are just to large to reasonably defend with a reaslistic group of survivors (10-15).

One of the plot-holes that bothers me alot is that survivors in many zombie movies and tv are struggling with decrepit materials. Like RV's that keep breaking down and date to the 1970s. There are thousands of RV's sitting around unsold that could be used. And using antique plows for farming when brand new Deere tractors are everywhere in farm country.

Came here to comment this. A big enough group with lots of manpower and tools could definitely crack a police station and use it efficiently, but we're talking power tools and generators that make a lot of noise and attract unwanted attention. A small group should steer clear of a police station and instead find something smaller to fit their group size, needs, and resources/manpower.

I feel like I should clear this up - "HOTEL" have the doors to the rooms INSIDE the building down a hallway. "MOTEL" have the doors to the rooms OUTSIDE the building on a catwalk. Some catwalks are covered, some are not. Just depends on how nice the motel is. I lived in a motel for almost 2 years - only had to pay for "rent" ($100/wk) . Yes, I was THAT poor at one time. Biggest Con of the Motel room (depending on the floor plan) but mine had the door and window on the same wall. One way in, one way out! If you get a Hotel room (with the door and window on opposite sides), then the biggest Con will be the drop down to the ground. If you're on the second floor (like my motel room was), you may end up with a sprained ankle. You could (in theory) leave a rope out to throw down when you go on a supply run, but... good luck trying to climb back up WITH those supplies. Also with the rope down and you gone, it leaves your room open to looters. I'm sorry, but I really see more cons to both hotels and motels than pros.

How about a Harbor or Pier? - There are usually several shops close by most that would offer supplies. - They can be fortified to be defended, and offer limited avenues of approach or attack. - If there are boats or ships there, they can offer additional housing, storage, and if needed, escape. - Depending on the area, fishing could also be done to boost the food supplies. - Bringing a Water Desalination vehicle or vessel would provide plenty of drinkable water.

I found the perfect zombie apocalypse shelter! Lowe’s or Home Depot! What you do is gather 10-15 friends and fortify it, how you may ask? Well you have basically everything you need in there! Talk about weapons and booby traps you can make. With time you can expand it make different rooms and such. Food? Well they have soil and seeds so just build a small garden/greenhouse. With time you’ll have a whole farm. They also have water filtration systems and plumbing supplies so like you can just have the water supply if it goes down, make you’re own. And they have the solar panels so running electricity well be like no problem, with time and the right people you can even build a small farm with animals you save. And boom you basically have a fortress. I seriously wonder why no one has thought of this before!!

Would a University be good in a zombie apocalypse scenario? [Here are my thoughts on this. Also, what I mention might not be the case for every university. And every university is different, the things I mention won't hold for every university.] 1) Too much space - Now, when talking about the University I go to, we have a medical campus in the downtown region, a cyber center that is far, and the main campus in the middle of high-middle/upper class neighborhood. So for this, I'm going with the main campus since it is the only one I've walked through. Now as far as campuses go, the main campus isn't the biggest, but you still have to do some walking. A lot of greenery, and trees. And parking lots, distant buildings... Yeah, too much space. However, one simple way to solve this is to pick one of the campus buildings to house yourselves in. Every major "Hall" has three floors. So one could suffice to pick one building, fortify the 1st floor, and would be golden. And I imagine you'd expand later on when you have enough people. 2) Supplies - A campus would have a lot of supplies. From one of the store buildings on the campus which the first floor has merchandise like University mugs, and regular supplies for education like lab gear, and even clothing. The second floor has a lot of books one could either use for survival purposes (IE starting a fire) or for educating the young if you decide to get frisky later on. Also, the 1st floor has a store fridge full of sodas, and also a bunch of chips and candy. Almost every "Hall" has a soda machine and vending machine on each floor, with the exception of one which has those machines on the 1st floor only. Also a building housing small meeting rooms, the library with even more books, and even a food area that resembles that of a mall food court with several different options bunched together. And one of the "Hall's" has a smaller food area. Also electronics one could scrap for parts, campus bicycles one could use to easily head from one building to the next, and a parking lot that may have vehicles to syphon gas from and loot as well. Though this could also be a negative reason since students of the campus would probably try to loot. If they can. Also, forgot to mention medical stuff. I don't know how many times I have to see a defibrillator on each floor! 3) Hunting - With a lot of trees, you get a lot of squirrels. I've seen lots of squirrels run along the grass towards other trees. So you could easily hunt the squirrels for fur and meat. Not to mention the surrounding neighborhood with a ton of trees to hunt small birds and squirrels. 4) Prime looting area - This campus is smacked down in a high-middle/upper class neighborhood. This area would be great for looting, since the campus may of been ransacked for food and drinks by former students. However, this could also be a negative because other people would also be looting the houses as well. So, take the good with the bad kind of deal. This is all I could think of when it comes to the campus I go to during the week. What do you think?

Something to also consider is that Police Officers will be on the frontlines of a zombie apocalypse, like, literally. Before a state of emergency, before the military, before the government gets involved, 911 callers will be sending in calls about rabid people going nomnomnom on others, and police will come in. After some fighting, I assume the police in this scenario couldn't handle it and call in other local agencies, statewide agencies, and any federal agencies around, if the city mayor declares a state of emergency, national guard and active duty military units would be called in. In this entire thing, local PD/SO/SP/HP or whatever it is will be the first on the scene of a zombie attack, so cops would be low in numbers as they would be the ones that have been combatting the zombies openly for the longest.

Interesting video. Good job as usual. When it comes to survival in that scenario, I am still going to stick to a houseboat that can populate 4-6 people. A decent one that can travel the rivers and along the coasts. I believe, over a longer period of time, it is important to stay mobile and have a location that keeps you out of the weather when needed. Mobility will keep you alive. No matter what location you try to keep (prison, Mall, police station, etc.) you will be constantly at risk of being either overrun by a herd, or a large group of people who want what you have. A houseboat (or custimized yacht will do fine) will always keep the risk at a minimum. FYI, I am of course talking about one that does not solely rely on fuel. ;-) But, everyone can pick what they want of course. Me, I just prefer something that I can hop on (or swim to) and get away from danger if need be. Never stay anywhere too long.

Keycard doors always have an emergency way to open them like a fire alarm button but more a "door bypass" button. They're unlocked until locksmith/facilities redo it. You'd need someone who knows about door technology. Assuming of course there isn't a fire exit. In a nut shell, modern country, you will always be able to exit without power. Emergency way to break the door (demagnatise) or like a regular ol' fire exit. Whatever solution implemented you'd need knowledge and access to 'relock' it because they're stuck open. So police station might work if you had a security guard or locksmith on your team that knows about that sort of thing.

In Canada, police guns are individually issued and your local police station doesn’t have a lot of extras/spares on hand. Also, most cops don’t carry backup guns. They also don’t have a lot of spare ammunition on hand. In a crisis situation it’s likely that the guns are mostly issued out, although in a crisis they might have more ammo available. Either you’re walking into a “hotspot” where you might find stuff but you’re going to have to fight someone to get it or the stuff is probably already going to be gone. Our police have central depots for evidence. You may find some stuff in the evidence locker but for the most part it will have been collected by forensics and transported to the central storage facility. Seized items are transferred there from local stations on a daily basis. Also Canadian police stations are not as heavily fortified as US stations and do not have the same amenities in terms of prisoner holding facilities. They’re certainly more secure than your typical apartment block or commercial building, and wouldn’t be too hard to quickly fortify further though. I’m also given to understanding that they also have generators and on-site stores of fuel for vehicles, so that might be helpful in the initial phases of the emergency. It might be theoretically possible to figure out a way to locate some solar panels and keep the lights and security systems operational after the fuel ran out.

A lot of zombie media tends to ignore the fact that an apocalypse doesn't just happen overnight. Even rapidly-spreading events are slow enough that the military and emergency personnel should be able to mobilize and try to establish order; at the very worst, they'll have gathered up anything usable from their normal bases of operation before relocating, so if you were to try raiding a police station post-outbreak you would likely either run into police already holing up inside or find an empty building.

What if you just put on a anti bite suit dog trainers use? You can just walk around and punch the zombies to death!

Lack of food for SURE should be a "con". There might be *some* food in the break room, and I suppose in the evidence locker.... I don't know why food would be evidence.... Anyways, not enough for more than a few days though. Not like a school, mall, prison, store, which would potentially have a ton of food...

honestly the one "pro" I could think of, is the holding cells. not only would it be used for individual sleeping quarters like in TWD but it could be used to trap one, and help understand more effective ways to eleminate them without much risk also the motor pool, place to get gas, parts, or tools, car or not its still something, especially if you and members of your group could find a semi-working one, and haul it back for scouting runs, or just to blair the radio and go down the road a ways. draw em off the station, kill the sound, and swing on back, picking up supplies on the way.

It would kind of be like going to the military base- 1. the cops are using it themselves or 2. they used everything already as they would have to respond to an issues. Anything left would be the stuff that would take time to get to as your not going to have the keys or codes to get in/out.
