Are PowerStop Z-36 Brakes for a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon better than stock?

I’ve had my eye on the power stop brakes pad and rotor kit for quite some time, and when my good friend Ryan mentioned that he needed to change his brakes, I immediately recommended the Z36 kit.
BUT the question remains… Are they really that much better? Red Rock Crawlers and I installed the base PowerStop kit ( • Installing Power Stop ... ) and it made a significant improvement. Will the upgraded Z36 kit be even better? Let’s find out!

Great video. Real world science is good enough to extrapolate the braking increases. I just bought these for my 90 YJ restoration. Entire new braki g system. Booster, resevoir, hard lines, soft lines and e-brake assembly. I can't wait to drive it. Lol Thanks again guys. God bless.

I need to do that to my YG. I replace the brake pads but it’s just too slow on breaking. I think the booster is next

Great video. Was surprised at how much brakeier the Jeep is now. Love that you gave a tip on how to push the caliper back with a c clamp (they make a tool specifically for that. Which you may borrow anytime you want to leave a valid identification and deposit).

Had these. Z36 extreme kit. Left front rotor developer a nasty set of grooves. Powerstop only covers cracking. In less than 3k miles I am not happy with there products and will never use them again.

My lady got this kit and we're not happy with the initial bite . Once heated they work better than stock but driving in south FL and having the usual butthead cut in front of you to exit highway ramps, you need that initial bite to be strong.

Picking the right brake set matters. On my JK I am running 37” tires and lots of weight, so I have the Teraflex delta brake kit. Four pistons and great stopping power. In this video Ryan only has 35” tires and not a ton of weight so this kit does okay for him.

After I almost T-boned someone who pulled in front of me, I put these on my 2011 Chrysler Minivan (Z36 front and Z23 back). Even though I was able to (barely) stop, having an extra 5 feet or so would have been nice. Nice video.

Thanks for this. I am planning on going with Dynatrac pro grips. I used power stops on my ‘97 Chevy pickup with no issues. I have been told not to get drilled and slotted rotors if off-roading. Something to do with mud and dirt getting caught in the rotors.

I'm not sure I can get this excited about the amazing six foot difference ? If I was racing ,I would use racing break pads . I think the holes and grooves are for out-gassing .(gas being trapped between brake pad and rotor face .
@1111Overland
@1111Overland 3 года назад
In the off road/Rock crawling world world that six foot means a lot more. We have a lot of weight in these vehicles and stopping it in the right place while at a 45 degree angle can be pretty important.

Slot and holes are for the heat management.. cooling the rotor not for dust ..

They are definitely for cooling, but the angle of the slots also help move dust out and away from the rotor as it turns.

Looking to upgrade my brakes in my 2019 JL Sport S. Considering Power Stop. Trying to decide between the drilled/slotted rotors and the solid rotors. It is a daily driver and I tow a 1900lb trailer (2000lb max rating) several times each summer.
@1111Overland
@1111Overland 3 года назад
My advice: drilled and slotted will be cooler (temp, not looks) which is desirable in a vehicle that tows. Plus the holes and slots help move brake dust off and away easier, keeping wheels and rotors cleaner. HOWEVER if you live in an area with lots of road debris, lots of dust, drilled/slotted COULD result in grime getting stuck in the rotors and squeaks and faster wear.

Two months after I purchased the Power Stop brake kit my right rear caliper failed and began leaking brake fluid. After waiting three weeks for the part, they now tell me the ETA is over a month away. This really sucks. I now have to buy and install a temporary generic caliper while I wait for the Power Stop caliper. Don't do it. Right Rear Leak TT797144

Install stainless break lines first you’ll find all the problems you may run into with new equipment before you screw yourself.
@SuzukiKid400
@SuzukiKid400 2 года назад
Don’t do what? Are you saying your calliper failed. Eva iwe of your new pads and rotors? It’s likely you instead damaged something when you installed the new parts. Or the calipers and lines were already shot and were going to fail anyway.
@104mack
@104mack 4 года назад
Not trying to be negative but is this a good comparison? Old worn out brake compared to the brand new. Wouldn't a better comparison be brand new stock vs. brand new Power Stops? I would think brand new stock would stop better than old stock?
@1111Overland
@1111Overland 4 года назад
WATRFWL VERY valid point. We actually did a similar comparison on another Jeep a few months later and I was disappointed that the difference wasn’t more dramatic. The PowerStop brand was still better, but your point is well taken: new brakes are ALWAYS better than old brakes!!
@naamangeist7843
@naamangeist7843 Год назад
I just installed these on my 392, did the break-in procedure as instructed on the box and now I've got squeaky brakes, the same sound you get when the brakes get wet but they're dry. Did yours do this and if so, did this go away in time? It's only when near a complete stop or when letting off the brake slowly.
@1111Overland
@1111Overland Год назад
No, they didn’t. My guess is dust. I would take the wheels back off, remove the pads and spray both the pads and rotors down liberally with brake cleaner. Assume you installed the little metal shims/clips correctly? That could also lead to squeaks…
@naamangeist7843
@naamangeist7843 Год назад
@@1111Overland yes, I used brake cleaner on the rotors before installing and the clips were put on just like the factory clip that came off. Also used brake lubricant on them front and back, as well as the mating parts of the caliper. I didn't use brake cleaner on the pads because they were new in plastic-wrapped package. I'll try your advice for cleaning them again and may run the pads across a belt sander to take off any glazing. I'm starting to wonder if the "5 aggressive decelerations & 5 moderate decelerations" break-in was too aggressive and caused glazing of the pads.

@aefgshwrthwrhnwrhnbw
@aefgshwrthwrhnwrhnbw Год назад
Drilled and slotted rotors have nothing to do with brake dust. When rotors get really hot they off gas and the slots/holes give the gas somewhere to go. Drilling and slotting reduces brake fade.
@1111Overland
@1111Overland Год назад
I was always under the impression it also gave a route for dust to escape, thereby preventing the overheating of the dusty that leads to messy buildup…. But I guess I was mis-informed!
