Honestly I feel like the fact that this service exists just highlights the loneliness epidemic happening in a lot of western countries. I know it was first identified by Erving Goffman in his book "Bowling Alone" and how it is linked to both the falling of community events and a rise in the commodification of third places. While this video is satire, it's always important to take products/ideas like these and identify the social structures that causes them to exist.

I used to be a professional cuddler. I made my own site for it and did a lot training. I would say youre correct. After seeing many clients, whom i cared about deeply, i realized our culture is becoming lonlier and there are becoming fewer ways to get safe, mutual, platonic touch. People need safe touch. They may need it to different degrees, but, generally most everyone could use supportive and safe physical affection. Its kind of sad that so few people out there getting it, and its sadder that so many people find this comedic. Humans having loving touch should honestly not be that weird.

I was thinking about the elderly who don't even have anyone to talk to, let alone touch them lovingly. My mom loves it when I brush her hair, for example. I imagine shut-ins could really benefit from this kind of contact but could never afford $150 per session. I think your foundation idea is terrific!

Troy was very funny in this. But even though I was laughing at the comedic bits, I was also struck with sadness at *_why_** this service is needed.* We are are so lonely/alone in this world. And it is sad that the internet brings people closer together, yet so much further apart. Would I ever try this cuddling service? Nope. However, I am very happy it exists for those who would. *Let's all do better.* 🤗🙏🏾

Its also not merely a matter of lonliness. Some people feel they have few safe options for cuddling. Some people have trauama around touch and have a hard time working through that. So sometimes a professional is a nice safe 3rd party the client can workshop their truama with.

This is the breakdown of the social bonds that are supposed to be there. I'm glad some people are getting comfort from it but it's not a service that should exist in a healthy society. Also, I do find it weird that you would have a romantic partner and still need to pay someone to cuddle you.

There are some people out there who cannot maintain a normal relationship with a significant other due to crippling social and/or mental disturbances; people with certain personality disorders, for example. I would think that someone who might benefit from the physical reassurance of another person holding them would be someone like this. Don't expect insurance to cover anything though, lol!

Very funny guy. Nevertheless there have been a lot of scientific research on touch and cuddle from infancy to adulthood and it benefits, mostly centered around babies and parents, spouses or those in relationship and from families. It's amazing

Absolutely true - but what I have difficulty with: if you have a partner, couldn't you just cuddle with them? I would be far more comfortable than cuddling with a stranger, and we could spend the money on date night, instead. 🤷‍♀️

As a matter of fact, there's a therapy method invented in Colombia for premature babies that consists on skin to skin contact between the baby and any of the parents. It does wonders to the baby's immune system and weight gaining.

@@lenkacfk7155 Though not super common, there are people who have an aversion to touch, even from those they love. Folks with autism and/or unresolved trauma from past abuse can find it very distressing. For others, especially men in western societies, it might come from emotional resistance and distorted ideas of masculinity. If they were raised in such a way that they aren't comfortable with the vulnerability involved or engaging with and expressing their feelings, they'll just avoid it. I think anyone can probably summon up the image of a stoic father awkwardly half-hugging their son pretty easily. Their children and/or spouses may need more than what they're willing or able to offer. Each relationship is its own unique series of agreements and compromises. If a couple wants to stay together, and that involves the outsourcing of some cuddles to make sure they're both happy, I guess that beats doing something behind their back. 🤷🏼‍♂️

It took me a bit to understand that too. I am going through therapy. As part of the process I often had strong emotions that came up about my childhood. Some things I tried to talk about with my mother. But I ended up unintentionally hurting her or she wouldn't understand and that ended up hurting me. I learned that somethings I need to work through with a therapist and not with family or a partner. She has a partner but there are some things she needs to put on a neutral unrelated professional. It can be hard when someone you love needs therapy and they put that emotional work on you. It can be detrimental to that persons mental health too or even the relationship as a whole. And then different people need different things. Some people need the physical touch to let out the emotions. Just like some people use music or yoga.

I thank The Daily Show for putting together this piece. I think I might've seen that this was a "thing" somewhere else before. All these different types of therapy are SO informative! I personally would NOT choose this as an option, the EW factor's just WAY too high for me. But I'm glad that there's an acknowledgement of people having intimacy issues & finding "healthy" coping mechanisms.

@@Francois176 Wasn't reading Cosmo at the age of 11 (still don't).. it was a study conducted that was written up in the newspaper. Several more studies have since been done measuring chemical response and well being. In the end, I ended up becoming a research scientist (though no hugs are involved in my research).

I feel you on that. As I was raising my kids, we hugged constantly. There was always so much love in our home. And when I see my granddaughter, we hug a lot, too. Unfortunately, being an empty nester means I get no hugs unless I see my kids or granddaughter. **picks up phone to call therapist**

I'm not gonna say that professional cuddling is a scam. It's completely understandable that such a profession should develop for a species of naturally social _animals._ And if they're completely honest about the service they provide and the rates they charge, then it's other people's business what they do with their money. I'm surprised, though, by a cuddle client... in a _relationship_ with someone.

I understand that after going through therapy that some feelings I needed to work through with a therapist and not my family. It's like how he fake pretended to cry during his session. Sometimes you need a neutral unrelated professional. Also It can be hard when what your partner really needs is therapy and they put that on you.

I am Iranian American and I think this is a bit of American problem. As a Iranian we hug everyone but after Covid I feel strange about even my doctor touching me for a while after Covid. I think if people put their phone down and spend time with other people and volunteer more often then they can feel better

I sometimes cuddle with my friends. But most of them are married with children and on top of that both parties have to be in the mood for cuddles for it to occur so it doesn't happen often. The family that lives close to me are not huggers for various reasons. I don't want to be in a relationship or own a pet and I have so many friends I have a hard time scheduling them all. Back when I was dating it was hard to just cuddle and not have the person start getting in the mood for more and ruining it (no fault of their own I know). At this current moment in my life, I occasionally think about using a service like this.
