They eat snails, their tunnels allow air and water to enter the soil, they teach each other new skills and they make great pets. I like them. As with all of us, they need to have boundaries to prevent them from being too numerous and to keep them out of our kitchens.

I've had 3 pet rats. People always ask "Do they bite?". One of them had a really weird habit of nibbling my socks while I was wearing them, but no. No matter how scared or angry they got (which wasn't much) they never once intentionally bit me.

"never once *intentionally*" I feel that is a very important piece of information. How much did they bite you "unintentionally"?

I've had 8 pet rats, they have a vendetta against socks haha. Have to go barefoot whilst they're out of their cage or my socks get nibbled.

I've had pet rats, and they are amazing! I am not going to be getting any more though, simply because it's too sad when they pass away. They have such short lives, it's hard to say goodbye so soon.

I was bitten by a rat when I was a kid. I was at an animal exhibition/fair and they told us we could pet the rats. It almost bit through my finger and even today I can see a small scar from it.

I have owned rats most of my life. I have owned many types of pets and none are so loyal, sweet and affectionate as my rats. They are the best pet you can own at any age. Mine are litter trained, come when they are called, do tricks and yet can be left alone for long periods like vacations and they are happy as long as they have companions.

We moved into a house next to a walnut grove. You could hear them scurrying in the walls. They filled the spaces in our walls and cupboards with walnuts. Still didn't bother me until they started chewing the cables to our computers. Then one day I decided to reread one of my favorite old books. The spine was intact, but 2/3 of it was just... gone. Started pulling out more of our older books. Entire family collections of books were destroyed, a grave sin that will cause me a little hate for anything. We trained up a kitten and let nature do the rest. I have enough biology under my belt to get why they're valuable, but interpersonally, there is little love lost for their inherently destructive habits.

Umm BBC did you say it takes 3 months for rats to reach sexual maturity? Meaning roughly 12 weeks.. Last time I checked you have to separate a litter of pinkies by 3 to 4 weeks cause (off the top of my head) rats can start reproducing at about 28 days, maybe it was 21. Please get correct me if I'm wrong.

I think rats are cute. We don't see a lot of them here. We have chickens and so we sometimes get mice, which are also cute. Unfortunately, between the chickens, who eat mice whole, and the cats, who eat them starting at the head, not many rodents survive here. We do get skunks and I absolutely love them. I often garden at night because, not only do I have insomnia, but it's terribly hot here until it gets a bit late, so I see the skunks rather often. I have been reading a book on my phone many times and had the skunks pass right by me. I have several photos of them walking by me like that and I have never been sprayed. The dog has been sprayed but dogs are less diplomatic when it comes to other animals in the yard.

so what makes some rats clean and others not? are pet rats always disease free?
@Jenny-kt2xj
@Jenny-kt2xj 6 лет назад
Yes, pet rats are always disease free, unless they've come into contact with an infected wild rat (or mouse). Pet rats are the same species as wild rats (the species is 'rattus norvegicus'), but they are totally different. You see pet rats come from a long line of captive-born rats, selected for temperament and colour. This line dates back to the 18th century (pet rats are therefore considered domesticated animals). It's like comparing a dog to a wolf, they are genetically extremely similar, but they behave very differently. TL;DR: There's two lines of rats: domesticated and wild. Wild = disease and unclean | domesticated = clean and friendly

well i mean i have had rats as pets before so yeah id have another one they are loyal smart and friendly also i dont get why any one is afraid of any animals (except humans) but imacommentj i hear all of you saying you are afraid of spiders no im afraid of the venom they deliver when they bite me spiders are cute and so are all animals the thing im nervous of is the venom posin or general mauling they dish out even then id be more than happy to come across a bear in the woods as long as there were no cubs around so mama has less incentive to kill me but im weird and dont see non human animals as a threat which seems to be a minority in the real world not on videos like this because for the most part we are all animal lovers

Yeah when I first got rats, I bred two rex breeds so I could get some hairless rats and before I could get a hand on the population within like 6 months I had like 50 something rats (12 were totally hairless). Had to buy 2 massive 6 foot cages and put males in one and females in the other and let them die out of old age/ cancer.

@RisqueBisquet

Animal testing saves lives. Yes, human testing exists, but it's highly regulated and vastly more expensive. Without animal testing, fewer experiments would be made, leading to less safe drugs, developed more slowly, which leads to more dead humans. Don't get me wrong, I love rats and don't want to see them harmed, but putting a rat life and a human life on equal footing is insane.
@MotherOfSuck
@MotherOfSuck 7 лет назад
The number of people who would die if we banned animal testing outweighs the animal lives lost for advances in medicine. It can certainly be cut back and regulated better though, especially in the cosmetics sector.
