Seemed like Leah and Craig wanted to hear that Utah won't be the great market everyone says it'll be and I feel like they got quite the opposite. Utah sounds amazing, Ryan Smith sounds like the dream owner, the fans are fired up and will sell out every game, the players will actually be treated like NHL players and the Delta Center is actually pretty nice. Congrats Utah, you're getting a nice, young exciting team and a boat load of draft picks. Enjoy!

Honestly a welcome party/hype event would be a horrible time to eulogize the Coyotes, because it would come off as disingenuous and gloating. Not sure why anyone would be offended that Ryan Smith didn't bring it up. Good PR move on his Part. Let people be offended at what he didn't say, because if he had said something, it probably would have started a firestorm of anger towards him.

This guys take is so far off. Downtown has not only changed in 20 years but I see downtown going crazy with new construction and entire new blocks being renovated almost weekly. There’s probably 30+ new major apartment building in the past 2-3 years creating population density downtown. The cost of living has shot up like crazy the downtown demographic is much more diverse. Does it have a ways to go? Absolutely. It started as a very small low density Downtown. But Salt Lake Proper is what we call the wasatch front. From Ogden to Lehi there a lot of people and yes he’s correct not everything is centered in downtown it’s more of a spread like LA. Utahns will show up and this team will be very successful. My heart goes out to all the die hards in Arizona. I wish things could have played out differently and I sincerely hope that the Yotes come back soon! Thanks for bringing on Ryan to try to get a better sense of Salt Lake. I just want to add a little more to what he was saying. The “Salt Lake City” metro is deceiving. It only includes Salt Lake County… the big tech hubs that Ryan talked about are primarily in Utah County, and the “SLC” metro doesn’t include people that live less than 10 miles north of downtown. To be completely honest, the “SLC” metro has never made any sense to me. For this reason, you really need to look at the CSA - 2.7 million. Yes, it’s much smaller than Phoenix but it’s also not nearly as small as it appears.
@kgroves17

Point is that saying there are only 1.2 million “in and around Salt Lake” is factually incorrect. Though I understand why this is confusing to someone who doesn’t live in Utah.
@Kolari85
@Kolari85 Месяц назад
This is correct. Salt Lake, Davis, Weber, and Utah counties are all effectively part of the Salt Lake metropolitan area, with a population of over 2.7 million. There are also other (albeit smaller and in some cases wealthier) communities within a 45-minute or less drive (like Park City, Heber, and Tooele) that aren't included in those numbers.

KSL is conservative church owned media. This Miller dude has that side of the conversation. Seeing what the Smith's have done in their lives and business gives me a lot of hope. The population should include the suburbs, just to make the equation accurate. Utahns don't really have a problem paying for infrastructure that will bring future events and income. Like Miller said, our 2002 Olympic venues have been used and kept updated. We have a new airport, hotels, freeways, restaurants, light rail from the airport right to the Delta Center. The arena and surrounding blocks will undergo massive change that will benefit the 2034 Olympic experience as well as the NHL and Jazz teams.
@RyanOlsonIsHere
@RyanOlsonIsHere Месяц назад
I don’t think the new/renovated arena is a selling point for the Olympics. One of the biggest selling points for Salt Lake hosting the Games again was _not_ spending tons of cash for venues. Delta Center hosted figure and short track speed skating in 2002 and was set for it again in 2034.

The return of the NHL is not going to happen in AZ as long as the State, City, and County governments show very weak support. There is also an anemic enthusiasm displayed by the community. And if Meruelo is still in the picture, we are doomed for failure. It's always euphoric when there is a new Pro sports team in town, but I think in a few years SLC will start losing money. A new tax was shoved down the throats of taxpayers of Utah for a billionaire who stands to make millions as NHL teams' values increase year after year.

You bitter AZ guys need to realize this was Bettman’s one desperate way to get rid of a shady owner. Utah won’t have all of the red tape and “under the table” deals that AZ has been dealing with for the last couple decades. The Utah arena will be funded and built/remodeled quickly without many problems and hopefully a new ownership group will stand up in PHX and start a new coyotes franchise. At the end of the day, this was Bettman getting rid of Meruelo the quickest way he could.
@LargeOhioSon
@LargeOhioSon Месяц назад
Although I disagree that their analysis comes from them being bitter, I genuinely do believe that the catalyst of this is Bettman being annoyed enough that he wanted to dump Meruelo. As soon as Utah jammed through 90M for a new stadium and Bettman saw Smith had real connections in the local government, that was enough to hot potato the team into Smith's lap. I think Meruelo was just too unpleasant and unsavvy on all fronts and they NHL was looking for a legal way to dump him bc they can't just strip a owner of their team. They don't have that level of control. They can force a sell scenario tho... I also think Bettman was afraid of having Playoffs in mullet arena and Yotes competing for a wild card this year rushed the math

While I agree that the arena situation is going to be a hurdle, it will absolutely be taken care of in a timely manner. Not only does Utah have the business support, but has the political support. And with the Olympics returning, state-of-the-art facilities are a guaranteed. Unfortunately, the future was too uncertain in AZ with all of the waffling their management and politicians were doing.
@Chris-kl6sx

It sounds like the plan for the Delta Center is to take out the suites on one end & mirror Balmer’s “Wall” in the new Intuit Dome. Then they’ll add a level of suites on the opposite end with a smaller seating section to the floor/ice.
@glendayle
@glendayle Месяц назад
I've been in several NHL rinks over the years. TMobile is fantastic. I'm not trying to suggest that a revamped Delta will be that level. It was originally built for dual purpose and Grizzlies used to play there. My speculation is that the Olympics is part of the long term stadium plan. I also think that even the most optimistic folks didn't expect an NHL team for at least 5 years, so the expedited timeline is clearly an issue. All of the 2002 Olympic facilities are still in use. I think they'll utilize some Olympic money to build/co-build a new arena. If that could be a possibility, a 500m revamp of Delta makes more sense to me. I also believe Smiths preference would be to have the teams in Draper/old prison land, but that he needed to commit to staying in Salt Lake for the governmental support. Probably a compromise most would make. I have a lot of friends in Cache Valley(90 min drive) buying season tickets and SLC is closer for the 3rd wave of population density(60-90 minute drive).

Apparently Utah has more ice than Arizona, but Arizona has way more USA Hockey players (9,232) than Utah (3,861), as of 2021-22. Cali is tops in the West (28K), but Minnesota is tops overall (58K).

@@glendayle That's fair. I hope there are better numbers out there. Also, I'm curious how hockey compares with other ice sports. There doesn't seem to be an easy way to find figure skating figures. So having a pro team does a lot for youth development. Hockey is prohibitedly expensive sport of a lot of people but having a pro team that funnels some of that money into youth leagues helps ease those burdens some. So here in Columbus, we were a hockey town. We had a very popular ECHL team but youth hockey didn't really bloom until after the Jackets arrived.
@RyanOlsonIsHere

Like any team, if they win consistently, they will build a loyal fanbase. Unfortunately, we here in AZ never had that capability due to the horrible ownership. This podcast continues to deliver! As a new NHL fan, I continue to marvel at the quality and quantity of the coverage. As a Utahn living near and working in downtown Salt Lake, I strongly disagree with Ryan's characterization of the downtown area. From my perspective, it has and continues to change rapidly. Much of it is unrecognizable from when I started working downtown ~20 years ago. I really appreciate the coverage on Utah and that you took the time to interview Ryan! Unfortunately, his rambling really contrasted with the polished and thoughtful deliveries of the hosts. I consume quite a bit of Jazz content and really enjoy his articles. This was my first time hearing him interviewed, and I don't think I'll go out of my way to listen to another one. For a more nuanced take, I'd recommend the Salt Lake Tribune's Andy Larsen.

I don't think Ryan Smith sending regards to Coyote fans in AZ would have been a good move at a NHL welcome party in Utah meant to hype up the players and new fans. It isn't the right time or place for something like that. It would come off as disingenuous, to mention it and then immediately start hyping the fact that Utah has a hockey team. AZ fans would probably see it as rubbing salt in their wounds and gloating. Not sure if he has said anything about AZ in seperate PR conferences or interviews, but those would be the right time to do that.

Very good show today. Thank you. It is true that SLC has some of the same problems we, over the course of the 11 years I was a ST holder had except the most important one. Your guest indicated that the residents of SLC support their city’s teams. If the team comes on to the ice and the sound man doesn’t have to pump the music real high because the opposing teams fans are louder and more numerous than “ Coyote “ fans.
