Are Sewing Machines a Good Surprise Gift? 🤔🧵 REAL TALK

Should you surprise a loved one with a sewing machine for Christmas or other occasions? Let's talk about whether or not this is a good idea... The reason I'm doing this video is because I'm seeing so many inquiries online with people asking the sewing community for machine recommendations in order to surprise someone else with a nice gift. While the sentiment is lovely, I want to get into why this may not be the best idea. I also explain why I generally do not provide specific sewing machine recommendations.

What do you think a good approach is to gifting someone a sewing machine? Let's talk here in the comments!

I agree with you...a sewing machine is very personal

Three years ago, I gifted my adult daughter a new sewing machine. She'd been sewing here and there on my mom's old 1969 Kenmore , but it was having a lot of issues and being older parts hard to come by. She came to visit one weekend, and I surprised her with a trip to our local dealer to pick out a new modern machine. I'd already screened a few that fit my budget for her to test drive and decide. She came away with a Brother Sewing and embroidery combo (NS1750D) and she loves it! She wanted a smaller compact machine, but needed something she wasn't constantly fighting with. This machine also has plenty of features for her to use as her skills grow. Turns out, she LOVES to do machine embroidery, and has really taken off with that craft. Her other skills as far as garment sewing, home dec, gifts, even some basic upholstery have grown exponentially. Now her 3 daughters are starting to use the machine too. Shopping that day was so much fun, and a memory we will always have.

Jen, this is the best advice on buying a sewing machine ever! I enjoy all of your videos but the advice to gift the promise of a machine rather than an actual machine is spot on. Keep up the great work.

😅You are so right. I gave granddaughter a replacement machine that had a few extras to her old one. She loved it but I talked to her and her parents first.

Back in 1985 my mother in law gifted me a Babylock sewing machine for Christmas. I had learned how to sew from my Mom and took sewing in Home Economics in Highschool. I did not own a sewing machine at the time and expressed an interest to sew clothes, etc. for my soon to come baby girl, hence the gift for Christmas (a total surprise!). It was the best, nicest gift I had every received, and not only did I sew her clothes, I made all her bedroom accessories and made gifts for family and friends. It was awesome! I personally think a nice entry level machine with some built in stitches is an excellent idea, paired with maybe a class at a shop or a gift certificate for a class. I still have that original machine and a couple of others (including an embroidery machine).

What a lovely memory thank you for sharing! I do think it does help if the person gifting the sewing machine has knowledge themselves about sewing and isn't going in totally cold.

I bought and surprised 2 of my friends with sewing machines. I got them both the same one that I had just bought myself , at the time, which was a Brother ST371HD. I did a lot of research and read many good reviews on this entry level machine. At the time, this machine was very reasonably priced and gives good value for the money. My 2 friends both loved their machines, but they do not use the machines much, so I am glad that I did not spend a ton of money. Since then, I bought myself 6 more sewing machines including a semi- industrial and 2 industrials but, I use the Brother ST371HD the most.

A few years ago, my niece asked for a sewing machine for a Christmas gift. Although my sister thought it was a lavish gift, I felt it was a useful tool to own. I don't think I had seen/used a sewing machine for 20+ years, but the process of researching a "good" machine got me interested in sewing so much that after I purchased a machine for her - Brother XR9500PRW Project Runway Limited Edition - I was so interested in learning to sew I eventually got a Juki sewing machine for myself. With what I have learned so far, I think having a sewing machine is a fantastic addition in any home. Just like some people want a stand mixer in their homes, a sewing machine is definitely a must-have. Years later, my sister is taking sewing classes and I like that - this is a gift that has served them well for many years unlike a pair of tennis shoes or a video game.

My mother always sewed. I remember her making my aunts wedding dress when I was 5. She had some old random built to last machine. One Christmas my dad woke us kids up with his hard hat in hand asking for donations toward mom a new machine for Christmas. I think I was 11? It was early 70s. He got her a next to top of the line Kenmore the kind with cogs. She loved that machine and it was the one I learned to sew on. But in general never buy someone a sewing machine for the reasons you said.

My daughter is getting a suprise sewing machine for Christmas lol, but she's a total beginner. There are 5 machines in this house she could use and either they are expensive, or with the pfaffs, not amazingly beginner friendly and she's scared of using them in case she breaks something (bless). In the UK/europe we have something called the Utan, which is a budget machine with a crazy number of bells and whistles, speed control, needle up and down, decent stitches, full quilters table, drop in bobbin which can take elastic thread, ok motor, 200 stitches and so on. It's the machine which has everything you want and need as a beginner to figure out what you want in a better-made and quieter machine. I have a suspicion that in a year she's going to want an embroidery machine and will be using the pfaffs. The very worst thing I could have done is get her some cheap brother or singer (UK budget models are a huge downgrade on US ) which would have made her hate sewing, I have Strong Opinions on people giving young people or kids a machine that they wouldn't use themselves, and would happily yeet all beginner machines into the sun.

My first machine was a surprise; I was in HS. My neices' first machines were gifts from me. These have been gifts that changed our entire lives. Should someone's second machine be a surprise? Not sure, it depends on many things. Mainly the knowledge of the gift giver regarding machines and the recipient.

One thing that does concern me is seeing so many folks inquire about extremely cheap machines (under $100) for gifts knowing they are probably not great quality.
@333Becca

Agreed! I tested my nieces' machines. The first one went back. If I couldn't get proper tension, a new sewist wouldn't be able to get the hang of it. I gave them a free lesson; we made a gift bag with a drawstring. They learned how to sew, how to iron, and had a finished project.

I agree that the $300 price range will give you better beginner sewing machines. A local sewing Centre/Dealer will allow you to test them out. Personally, my first sewing machine which wasn't the juncky $25 tiny machine which was a waste of money, WAS an old from the 70 cast iron turquoise Kenmore that was the weight of a boat anchor... I got it for a $25 listing and basically could only straight stitch. When it seized up instead of trying to get it repaired for over $100, I went to Sears back in 2005 and got a Kenmore model from them... it did it's job but for the life of me I could not get it to satin stitch for whatever reason the threat would slip and not satin stitch out. The reason I go it is that Sears gave almost lifetime maintenance on their machines. I was VERY happy to upgrade I think back in 2016-2017 to my on-clearance Janome model again for around $299CAN because the model was being DC'd for newer incoming models. But I learned how to use sooooo many stitches and sewing techniques on this model. And because it WORKED I used a lot of the programmed stitches it had and the box of different sewing feet it came with including an overlock stitch foot. Because the stitches it had showed how powerful have different types of functional and non-decorative stitches can be when making garments. Also had needle alignment adjustment that my old Sear Kenmore would have never had. It allowed me to get VERY precise measurements when Topstitch, Edgestitch and Understitching garments for the first time. I ended up getting my first Serger in 2019 also on DC'd clearance but I also upgraded to cast iron innards model once I was able to test the different ones out at my Sewing Centre for $600CAN ... But I know that the machine can take the speed and abuse after testing it compared to the cheaper plastic part ones that started at $300 because of the metal component upgrade. Should last me a lifetime with proper maintenance you the owner can do. So I definitely recommend going to a place that allows you to test out models instead of a store that will only TALK about the features (ala Sears). The 2016 Janome model, I bought off The Shopping Channel, they did live testing on the show to show off the features of the machine that Janome Canada had made a deal to move the model through TSC. So I could see how it functioned without testing it myself. Best investment!!!

I worked at JoAnn for a long time and was in a store with no dealer and people didn’t realize how hard it is buying a sewing machine. I want to know what you’re making with it. I’m guilty of sending people to dealers after telling them to go ask the recipient what they are making. I always tried to inform them with information like most big box stores won’t return these.

@@SewingReport I'm currently cutting out a Christmas dress in a cotton with "Joann exclusive" down the selvedge. I'm in the UK, and our deadstock sites had Joann's premium range Halloween, and Christmas stock in this year. I would be willing to take a punt that this is not a good thing.

I think it's not a good idea either to surprise someone with a sewing machine. But I have a question. I would like your opinion on this. I want to buy an embroidery machine but don't want to spend a ton of money. I am a total newbie to embroidering. The question is, is it alright to start out on a machine that the hoop is only a 4x4? I know you can't do a whole lot with a 4x4 hoop but I thought I would start small and if I really like it then go for the bigger hoop machine. Any thoughts on this Jen? Thanks.
@SewingReport
@SewingReport 7 месяцев назад
Honestly, only you can answer that question for yourself... There's just no way I could determine whether 4x4 would be "enough" for your needs. A lot of people ask me for machine recommendations, and it's just too personal of a choice for me to give my input.

I'd say take them shopping at a (real) sewing machine dealer and let them interview them about what type to buy based on their skills and let them try them. Then find one second hand or online or at Joann's. I would say give them a gift card, but there have been huge problems with cards of any kind (gift cards, EBT cards, etc...) Oh, I have a significant other surprise purchase horror story. I told him I wanted a longarm. I had researched what I wanted for a few months. I had watched a few videos on Leah Days channel recently, one was for the Cutie frame setup. I called a dealer and ordered what I wanted, a 15" Q'nique and a queen frame. Boyfriend went thru my internet history...saw the videos I watched, bought me the Cutie. I was so, So, SO mad that he went thru my computer to "spy" on me, we (I) broke up. I sold the Cutie on Craigslist and gave him the money...never talked to him again.

Unless you know someone is actively saving up to buy a sewing machine, don’t do it. Janome has a good 120$ entry level sewing machine. It will hand things like clothes, pillows, etc. When some wants to go on to a “bigger machine” it make a great machine for small projects so you don’t have to pull out your “big” machine.
