I been drag racing since high school in the 80’s. My dad raced since the 60’s. You have more steering control with a skinny front wheel and tire like you said. But weight saving can be huge when setting up a car. With a bad surface like a street or back side no prep saving 10-15lbs each wheel is huge. If I can take 20-30lbs off the nose it can really make a difference plantings the rear tire and suspension. I can run more air pressure in the rear, that gives me an easier rotating mass in the rear. I agree with everything you said and skinnies or front runners.

15x3.50 rims 26x7.5 -15 tires on my small block chevy nova run them on the road , no problem, just be careful around turns and wet weather

Weight is weight. Rotational weight is 4x the weight. But that more important on the drive tires or in a track situation with suspension movement (gyro affect)

Explained it perfectly great job as always I have the ssr spike wheels 28/10.5/15 Hoosier on the rear and 27.5/4.0/17 on the front I drive my car every day unless it going to rain

Any any unsprung weight removed is a huge difference in weight savings. Lighter tires lighter wheels and brakes will make the car feel much much lighter.

I have some original cragar drag stars they were before weld pro stars fronts 15×4 rear 15x7or 8 not sure on rear. Front tire is 215/70r15 i went to this size from a 185/65r15. I needed and wated a taller front tire to stop exhaust from scraping everywhere. Rear tire is a 275/60r15 which is as tall as u can get unless u get a specialty 285/70r15 which is massive at 31x11. I honestly got the wheels cuz i have love the look for years. It screams american muscle. I know with the 185/65r15 corning grip was a huge issue but i have also heard that skinnies or front runners are not meant for turning or corning mainly straight line so no donuts for me which is fine. I dont wanna rearrange the trunk anyway. Great video stay safe good luck on your goal of 9sec

I don’t think the grip part is correct. He implies it gives less grip where as (and only my understanding) is that for only going straight narrows give more feel over a wide tyre. The science is supposed to be the same as to why skis are narrow, they dig in and grip as apposed to putting two snow boards on your feet where you would sledge and slide everywhere. Obvious downside is they don’t turn corners as well

I'm going with a set of Weld S71 17x10 in the rear and the new Weld Alumastars up front that will clear all the late model big brake kits. Hope to run deep into the 10s with 0 power mods on a 17 ZL1!

Will you b able to upgrade the brakes to 6 piston with those wheels?? Also with a 3600 lb car wouldn’t it be pretty sketchy if you lose control on the track? Wouldn’t it be much harder to recover from?

If you lose control you let off the gas. No being a hero... Not planning to add 6 pistons as I will not be road racing anytime soon. But you would need an 18” front wheel to clear 6 pistons

Video is like 5 years old and I hope you see this to reply…. How did those tires do at higher speeds on the front. Most front runners are H rated how was it running 160mph with those on the front? Thanks in advance. I’ve been racking my brain on how to make this all work

I've seen weld wheels bent right out of the box and couldn't be balanced and had to ship back... no one is perfect.

Will the car stop the same way with the front runners as with the stock tires? I wouldent want to be on the street and brake hard and the car keeps going..

It's not just the weight savings. I ran a radial on the front of a 10 second C5 with a slick on the rear. It was downright scary at the end of the track. The patch area was at least the size of my et streets in the rear. If I had a skinny on that car I would have been able to push it harder on the top end and a lot safer too.

It's more like $1400. Just priced a whole setup for my car and I'm looking at $2700 for fronts and rears with mickey Thompson tires, and that's going with Forgestar D5 wheels which are less expensive than welds... you can spend over 4k on these setups. It's kinda ridiculous.

I am running a Bogart D10 runners but weld racing its the best ,the problem was weld didn’t make for 6 nuts for silverdos 😩

Hey Matt i know its an older vid but im wondering how much you gained with the drag pack. Im going with Forgestars f14 17 x11 with 325 35 17 M@h for the rear. Fronts are Forgstar 18 x 5 with Mickey Thompson 18x 6 tire. Im a fbo cammed l99 with 391s and a 3200 stall. Trying to better my 1.9 all day 60 ft. Thanks.

Either do I daily drive mine but I just put a whipple on mine and need weld rear drags with M/T and also want my front to match my rear. Would I be able to safely drive with skinnys on the street when I do drive on the street... or should I put 18 or 20in in the front for when not on the track..

Matt, can you not just jack your car up in the garage and do a test fit on front with just the rim please. I am interested to see if it clears the front brakes. Thanks
