I’ve spent £20k on a solar battery system not inc the electric cars, I now save 0.40p a day. I presented these figures to my wife last week and haven’t seen her since!
@drchrisjbarnettgreentech
@drchrisjbarnettgreentech Год назад
I could jest and say does not see you wife save you money. On a more serious note, how much on average do you save per day on average throughout the year?
@williampelzer1460
@williampelzer1460 Год назад
How's that possible? Were you getting energy for half the price of the rest of us before install? The easiest way to save is using an octopus tariff (smart, go etc.), then charge the batteries from cheap energy at night during winter... The summer should save you loads (on average you'll have a surplus depending on usage and circumstances) meaning that your annual bill should be roughly half.

My tariff is 19.5p per kWh, we fixed with British gas in August 2021 until March 2024. In November are electrical import was 35%, and its looks like December is about the same (new video looking at December next week), so i think we will have reduced out our electric bill by 80% over a year (not including standing charge)
@georgejohnson7591
@georgejohnson7591 Год назад
I'm generating the thick end of not a lot. My operating mode until we get some sunnier weather is to charge my battery overnight with off peak electric to 80% capacity. This usually lasts me all day and leaves some space for a topup from solar if the sun does peek out through the drizzle. At least it halves my electric bill.

Great video. I decided to just get battery storage using the Growatt 6.5KWH battery. Loads of shade on my roof from trees so panels not viable. It's been a month and average savings appear to be between £40 to £50 a month. We use a similar amount of energy as you do. For an outlay of £4600 I don't think this is a bad return on investment using the Octopus Go Tariff which is currently 12p per KWH (off peak) and 41p all other times.

Yes, when i looked at getting solar / battery, the ironic point was that i couldn't really cost justify solar because it wasn't competing with imported electric price but with off peak via battery at 1/4 the standard rate (octopus go also) and so although my house is in a good position for solar, as my use is quite low (single household), solar wasn't really worth it and the payback period for batteries was probably similar to how long i may be in this house about 7 years. If i was gojng to be here for 20 years id dump gas get heat pump and go solar and at least 8kWh batteries.

@@ecoterrorist1402 I'll have to see how it evens out over the summer as the electricity usage is alot less. Who knows where prices may be in the next 6 months but they are only likely to go one way so th ROI could be alot sooner.

We haven't begun our solar journey yet but are considering it. Q. Do you still pay your grid supplier a silly amount daily for standing charges? Ours presently is close to 45 p a day, considering they're only offering SEG rates of 4/5 p per Kw seems a mockery. So far, I've had two quotes for 16/12 425 watt panels, 6KW inverter and 5KW battery, both different equipment but costs are similar. One offer was for 16 panels, the other suggested we only needed 12. As cost difference was minimal should we opt for "bigger is better" and have the extra units? As far as batteries are concerned, is one type better than another? Your helpful advice will be much appreciated.
@drchrisjbarnettgreentech
@drchrisjbarnettgreentech Год назад
Hi, its something to consider. So you still have to pay the standing charge if connected to the grid, i pay 23p a day. Current all UK tarrifs have standing charges, but a few years ago there were zero standing charge tariff but the price per unit was higher on them, you never know in the future they may come back. In terms of batteries things to consider is you daily usage as they give an idea of the size, the amount useable (usual 80-90% of the total capacity) and what power the battery can output (some battery will only be able to output 3kW which means if you need 3.5kw, you will draw the extra 0.5kw from the grid, that's the reason we went with the puredrive as with can output at 5kw.

@drchrisjbarnettgreentech Год назад
Also go for as many panels as possible, as in the winter and on cloud days they will produce more energy
@CastleKnight7
@CastleKnight7 Год назад
@@drchrisjbarnettgreentechAgreed. As many as you can afford to fit, the better, combined with a decent sized battery to store excess for use at night or the following day if it’s going to be cloudy.

Only 5kwh a day seems very low. Since the prices started going up last April i've implemented every trick in the book to reduce our energy consumption but even then it's still between 75kwh and 95kwh every 9 days according to my smart meter so that's between about 8-10kwh a day.
@drchrisjbarnettgreentech
@drchrisjbarnettgreentech Год назад
Since getting the solar panels, I've being tracking my usage over September, October and November its been very consistent, at 210kWh per month so its about 7kWh per day. Over the past few years I've used about 2100kWh per year, which averages to 5.7kWh per day, but now we have also tried to use electric instead of gas so that why we are now up to 7 per day average.
@CastleKnight7

Our home uses about 5kW in electricity per day, but saying that we don’t have a tumble dryer or dishwasher. It’s very efficient and well insulated.

A curious title and proposition. If you had determined the panels do not ‘earn their crust’ in winter - would you propose removing them? It’s all about annual performance.

@@normanboyes4983 the title was designed to get people to click on it and comment (it seems to work). Anyone who buys panels should assess their own situation to see if they are financial worth it (if that whats important to them, if they are also interested in green energy production and stability then if with winter reduced output they are well worth it) and this video may just help them by adding a bit info from my experience.
