In simple words, 1. It'll be the current investor and future IPO owners losing out on revenues whereas, Mama Earth founders will buy all the luxury with their short lived entrepreneurship 2. This trend will kill the future startups as they might get even under valued during valuation and funding 3. Amazon and other marketplace will extend discounted tariffs until they start their own private labels or new entrants The ideal IPO / funding should be based at the actual profits ( Year on Year ) rather than fancy Presentations

An important point about this topic is missed by a lot of Indian influencers. Just because Mamaearth is profitable (barely breakeven) all the financial gurus are now valuing the company on EBITDA. If it had been making a loss, then they would have been valued on their revenue which was 1000 cr. So the valuation comes out to be a 22-24x multiple which still might be high but not that much fuss to be created. In this case, I feel Mamaearth made a mistake by showing profit on its books. They should have shown some miscellaneous expenses and atleast be in loss of a 5-6 crores so that they are not punished by market expectations

That's some very aggressive hand waving. Still, thanks for compiling and sharing this info for us troglodytes! The one thing I did notice about these products are that the formulations are really not that different from cheaper alternatives. The natural ingredients they claim to use measure in single digit percentages. Many households don't get anything of value for that additional price, hence they don't bother buying them.

Mama Earth is more aimed at Upper Middle Class and There pricing is one of the factors as to why there sales are so less (even with Quality Product's across their Inventory ) , India is not a Small Market rather it is Economical market and People think twice before purchasing anything which is not of utmost importance Hence Mama Earth can only earn Profits if it revises it's Prices for Customers !

Btw … you guys should dig deeper into the boom in retail lending patterns, how startup’s are dumping money on retail durable consumer purchases with interest rates as high as 35% ! And guess what, these interest rates are never truly revealed by them. For the first time since 2007, Indian Retail outstanding loans has surpassed the industry loans number. Do dig deeper, it’s a bit systematic risk red flag. A video will be fun.

I've often thought about these absurd prices that these B2C cosmetic companies charge. For a lower middle class family,it is nearly impossible to afford these products. You guys mentioned a good example that people would rather buy Chik Shampoo than an expensive one ,even if the cheap shampoo isn't as effective as the expensive one.

I think a similar thing was demonstrated by paytm ipo fail. It was a hilarious fail for the investors and it was so laughable that they accept these outrageously high and overprojected evaluation and then had to take huge loses as the evaluation immediately fell after the ipo. I really hope that people looking into investing become smart with their money and really look into all loopholes and shells before commiting their money to a motive/company/share like this.

I think the problem is that the founders are being a tad bit more money oriented than being product oriented. very rightly said that IPO should not be an exit strategy rather it should be a way to reach the investors who love your product. I like mama earth products but would never buy their shares at such a valuation

Even though you guys didn't listen to my advice about turning of hard-coded subtitles, let me give you another one to ignore. While recording make sure you point to small number at left of screen and large number to the right of screen. The reason I suggest it is because English and Hindi both are written from left to right. I hope you see my point because I don't want to type anymore. :)

Reality of many 🦄. Start a company with a rosy story. Pretend to solve a big issue. Show unrealistic valuation. Hire lot of employees to justify this valuation. Spend maximum on marketing ( blog, vlog, insta, newspapers, online news etc etc). Get maximum funding. Hire highly paid CVD level titles. Take maximum remuneration even though company is making zero profit. Sign up with vendor companies owned by relatives. Create fake invoices to divert funds to these vendors. Sell the company, make maximum money you can make.
